How did you pick your current main charater?

My first main started out to be Link which I played as a main from SSB64. I used him until I unlocked nearly all the newer secret characters. I thought Mewtwo was cool and switched to him for awhile, but I he wasn't what I expected him to be so I switched to Marth cause he looked cool. I played Marth for awhile as a main, but since I played free for all mostly, I found that he got pummeled around too much cause he was too light.

So I chose Roy thinking he would be heavier getting thrown around less, and thought it was like Ganondorf and Captain Falcon of stronger but slower theory. So I used Roy for a couple years thinking of this, I got good with him, till I found out Marth was the stronger one especially with his tipper, which my friend told me. I didn't want to accept this at first because I was attached to Roy, but I remembered that I liked Marth better cause he was cool and switched to him, and now he is just too awesome to play with after learning all the new techniques!!

I used Kirby and Mario in SSB64.

When I went to Melee I tried out all of the characters, and picked Falco and Ice Climbers at first. But then I saw all of the videos on the net and was disgusted with what people did to Falco. So I switched to using Kirby, Yoshi, and Mario. Though sometimes I still use Ice Climbers.

The current choices definitely suit my fighting style. So I was happy I picked them up!

marth, i've gone through quite a few characters. in the end though, sad to say, the advantages of playing marth were just too apparent. if by main, you mean the person i play for a crucial win, then it goes to marth. however, i usually try to pick other characters when i play friendlies or someone below me in skill

Samus, she answers everything I'm looking for, my favorite Nintendo char since super metroid on the snes; her play style which is based around influencing the way your opponent moves which is something I try go for in every fighter; she a girl, I like girls.

And then pichu, I started playing pichu simply because s/he//it is low tier. But after a while of seriously trying the little chu quickly moved up a just a fun character to play in an competitive environment. Playing a character with the world telling you you can't do it sort of pulls that extra bit fighting spirit out of me. I love being an under dog.

I always go for the small, all-around characters. I really main Ice Climbers, just started to pick up Ness after realizing how cool PK Bronze is, and I also play Pichu for fun. The funny thing is I say I lke equal short characters when probably my best character is Ganon.

Howdy, I never make topis in the melee discussion place so I thought I might as well ask a question here...

How did you choose YOUR main character?

Yes, I mean your tourney character, not your "favorite" character, but the one you use primarily in matches that matter.

I think its pretty obvious why I chose mine, its because he is my favorite Nintendo character, I love him in every game he is in and I was really excited when I heard he would be in Melee, he was the first character I ever chose in the game and I've stuck with him since, I've had a few secondaries from time to time to go with him, but they never had priority over Bowser.

Recently I've dropped all secondaries to go all Bowser in tourneys and have been doing much better.

So, how did you choose YOUR main?

Was it because the character was good but you lost your old main in order to improve your own skill? tell us here. Do you even like your character? Do you play fox solely because of his shine? Maybe you are a speed freak and need to play as captain falcon? Power characters are for you so you choose Ganon? Does the character just fit your style? Do you LOVE down on the cstick so peach was the girl for you?

Explain how you chose your current main, I'm very curious.

In the first super smash, I used link and donkey kong cause those were the only two characters I knew from another game. Then in SSBM I chose fox because he's fast and link because his sword attacks knocks you almost to the end of a stage.

In the original Smash Bros I used (and still use) Mario esentially all the time.
So when I first played Melee I started with Mario and I found that I used him quite well but after a while I found out that Mario was'nt exactly the best choice for fighting up close and personal specialists so I then switched to Fox for a little bit but I got sick of him fairly quickly and I found myself bored of playing as the extremely quick guy. When I went back to Mario My friends started to notic that I was actually using him in every way possible (so I thought) and they suggested I should play all the other characters to find a secondary to work with as well and during the search I learned to play as Samus and Marth and unfortunately they kind of made my Mario play dissappear with the all around Nature of the two and eventually I started using Samus a lot and made my Game slightly better with her than my overall play with Marth

I never played SSB64 that much. I had it, yet it got dwarfed by other games like ocarina of time and such. But when i got into melee, i loved doc. Then i thought that since i was so good with him (but crap in reality haha) that i should pick up another one. And that led me to falco. I picked him before i knew anything about tier lists. I liked his look, his high jumps, and his blaster, but most definitely his shine. Then i saw some vids, and loved him even more, and learned how to use him better. I have been a happy falco user ever since

When I was about 9 or 10, I forgot which, my cousin would sometimes come over a few times each year and bring his N64 and Smash64. I picked Samus immedietly, thinking "cool a robot" And honestly, I was crap lol. We had like 4 people ffas and I just charhed her beam, ran, fired, and repeat. Then a few years later I got melee and I 've been using other characters,. but I guess my Samus is still the best of alll my chars.

Originally I chose Luigi to put him in pink and laugh at his... um... gayness. Then people were saying that I wasn't bad w/ him so I stuck with Luigi. Now it‘s matured and I have loved the character ever since. (I now use blue Luigi)

Same thing with with Jigglypuff but instead of pink flashy hand slaps it was mad 1337 ninja skills. (I know use crown Jiggs)

With Pichu, my friends and me would always laugh and say that he sucks. We would have bad character battles and pwn n00bs w/ him. With all my "Pichu sucks" matches I ended up not being bad with him and use him in my Low tier tournaments and against C.Falcs and the occasional Falco.

When I was starting to get good I was playing a lot of characters, and then I realized I won a lot more with Peach and had a better understanding of her moveset. There was an upcoming tournament, so I just played a lot with Peach so I actually had something to show, and now I'm just a lot better with her than anyone else.

A friend at the same level as me 3 months ago is a spammer of Luigi's Missile and i couldnt beat him, I played bith him and a friend in his first Smash fight so i choosed random, the range and the edgeguarding helped me a lot and i defeated him only using the neutral B of Marth<lol> so i started mainling Marth.

Just from playing random matches against a friend. My Ness was giving all his characters problems, and I really liked seeing the scary things you can do with DJC. So I dropped my Falco (who was getting ***** by my friend's Marth and Jiggs) and picked up Ness. Haven't played his Jiggs yet with it though, I'm sure that's gonna suck.

i use falcon because i got f-zero x for n64 back in 2000 and that game ****ing scared the crap out of me. LOL i got dizzy whenever i played it and the whole bounty hunter thing was kinda creepy back when i was 6 years old.. all the characters looked kinda scary to me too, lol. fun game though.

I used to be in a stubborn complexed mood and i would only play Roy. I learned most of the advanced combat techniques , so i thought that i was pretty good . while web browsing i stumble on random links that eventually led me to smashbaords and i noticed that they was a tourney just outside my local area so i went to that after getting my but kicked. by falco and peach players . I was thinking i needed to play a faster character , One that can contend at the higher levels of play so i decided to go marth and since marth was identical to roy in terms of attacks i found it really easy all i had to do it just learn the sweet spots , etc

I played Samus in SSB64, as well as Kirby and Fox. I played Samus because I felt like a bad-*** whenever I connected with Screw Attack. When Melee came out, Samus was the only one of the characters I played who felt at all the same as the last game, so she's the one I continued to play as. Then my friend started to hand my *** to me as Marth, so I decided I'd try to get good as Marth. Eventually, I was maining Marth, but seconding Samus. Soon I started coming to my school's Smash club and started to fight some people who knew advanced techniques. Right of the bat, it became obvious that my Samus was better than my Marth without advanced techniques, and the more skilled players in the club suggested I switch back to her. I did so, and have pretty much stuck to her ever since.

Now im sort of like a bit stuck, i like roy a lot because hes really strong and beats others really fast , but watching you guys say that in high level he isnt as good, ive been thinkin you know. Me and my friends meet a lot to play ssbm but theres one who always beats me, his maiin is dr.mario, but hes really good with ness too. The problem is that i cant get near him because of his distance atacks . Also i realize that you dont see any pro people in tournament battles choosing roy. I just dont know wat to do

I'm a Fox/Sheik main, and I have very different reasons for picking both characters.

Before going to college, I only used Dr. Mario. My college friends thought it was weird that I only used Doc, so I decided to dabble in other characters, and Fox was one of them. After practicing with him for a while, he became considerably better than my Doc.

The first time I picked up Sheik was a few weeks later. This was partially just because none of the other top smashers at my college used Sheik, which seemed weird to me. I used her as a secondary for a while, but I started getting better with her after a Sheik main I played in a friendly 2-stocked me in Sheik dittos, which made me realize was my Sheik wasn't nearly as good or versatile as I thought it was and motivated me to improve. I didn't play for a while after that, and once I started again, I was prone to making stupid technical errors with Fox, so I started using Sheik more often. My Sheik has since become about as good as my Fox.

My main is marth. when i first picked up smash i used link just cuz i didn't have all the people and i was a big zelda fan, i then unlocked marth at a certain point and he just looked so cool to me. the way he brushed his hair, his taunt, his sword, he just seemed like my kind of guy. of course, i had no clue he was such a good character with his reach and tipper etc, and in my opinion, the best in the game. of course even until i unlocked all the characters, i still stuck with marth. when i started going to more and more tournaments, i stopped with marth and went falco. mainly cuz of bombsoilder when we all heard about him. of course, i went back to marth and use fox as a secondary and falco for a third. man do i love my marth.

I used to play with Sheik, but when I saw a video of Kizzu using Marth, and because I like Fire Emblem now, I chose Marth as my main.

Oh wow, let's see... My true main is Peach. I started out using Link because, well, he was cool. But one of the people I used to play was a cstick spamming Marth, and each time we fought, I would get closer and closer to losing to him. So I chose to start secretly practicing with Peach. Why Peach? Toad! He was the answer to the superpredictable cstick spamming, I thought. But along the way I discovered her true awesomeness: the floating, the turnips, the Dsmash, the arial combo madness, her f-throw of doom, and other things too...Indeed, when I finally played him, I 4-stocked him. Mind you, this was years ago when everyone I knew, myself included, was a total noob.

I started using Samus when I was trying to get the hang of wavedashing. But then I also learned some of her cooler tricks, like bomb-jumping and grappling. I even learned to superwave dash consistently (I can do it about 70% of the time ).

Jigglypuff I started using as a joke, but wowow, I found the **** (Dthrow) + Rest combo that practically OHKOed anyone who didn't DI correctly. That along with the Wall of Pain, some godly recovering, even more amazing egdeguarding, and the most disgustingly cute taunt made her an awesome character.

I chose my main because I just love Captain Falcon. The way he moves, how he can kill at ~70 percent, how quick he is, aerials, the knee of course. I've been interested in F-Zero as well, and when I started to play it, I started to play Falcon as well.

I use Luigi, the picture to the left might give a hint. But anyway I started with Mario, becuase well he was cool and I just beat Super Mario 64 and what not. But he was to sticky and I didnt feel right with him. When I unlocked Luigi (by accident) he had all the right things I wanted, Nice Control, Just the right Traction (), his funny look, and he's speed. (Yes speed, he's faster then CF if your good with WDing). I didnt even know what Wavedashing was until a year ago! I still liked him, even if his in the Low Tier.
