How can walking be used?

OK, so it just occurred to me, when do I ever walk? Everyone just runs, DD's, WD's, wavedances, etc. So it brought up this question: Can walking actually be used for mindgames or constructive strategies? Anyone have any comments or pointers here?

It's good to use attacks out of if your wavedash is too long and you aren't entirely comfortable with pivoting. Most people aren't. Ken walks all the time to edgeguard people who try to return above him.

you can drive your opponents mad with mario's tap-tap-tap walking, maybe even bust some funky beats in a dual-mario team!

walking is good for precision (especially when you only want to adjust your spacing a little bit).

seriously, don't snipers in FPS actually move slowly when they are aiming.

i actually don't play many FPS, sorry if that's not really true...

fancy or advanced stuff is good, but don't underestimate the basics. you have all your options when you walk.

when you dash, not so.

i love walking.

Walking is very useful although I rarely employ it. I've seen people casually walk away from an aggressive opponent and surprise them with a dash attack in the opposite direction. It is also much better to be precise, and not many people see it coming

walking? i walk at times myself, reasons

1.) slow down gameplay for a second

2.) spacing
3.) easier to react
4.) to look like a walking computer
5.) marth walks funny

Like already mentioned, I usually only walk to space things out, which I also use wavedashing for. I don't find it useful for mindgames.

i use walking to get to my classes and when i want to enjoy the fresh air.

But in the game, i think characters that have good range on their forward smash should use it to space, like everyone has been saying.

I'd have to agree with everyone that walking is best used for mindgames and such. Personally i've seen players use it for subtle movement out of which they can spring into rapid motion to bewilder and surprise opponents. Definately takes good control which alot of players dont have.

Yeah, one day SSBM will be chock-full of so many advanced techniques, we won't even remember what walking is :dizzy:

Anyways, it seems the most popular reasons for walking, if people even use it :( , is:

1. F-Tilt
2. Spacing and slightly more relaxed gameplay
3. Possible mindgames

I use walking mostly to lure my opponent into my desired spacing and "playbox" (term invented off the top of my head. The range where I find my opponent best placed for me).

You can do the lazy edgehog with walking. Just walk over to the edge, turn around, and let the momentum carry you off.

You can do Dtilts faster while walking, since you need to CC first if you're running.

Wouldn't that work with running too? It's interesting anyways. If that works, it could be even faster than turning around and WDing in some cases.

try slowly walking towards someone from a good distance away and then when you get closer short hop into a waveland towards them. the acceleration is so quick you can catch people off guard pretty easy.

Well, with running, your character would get stuck in that slow turning around animation at the last second, and when he's doing that, it doesn't let you fall backwards off of edges.

If you're just beggining your dash and try to dash the other way as soon as you come close to the edge, you'll just move too far by dashing.

However, there is some kind of glitch with dashing backwards just as you're about to run off the edge, it takes frame perfect timing but if you dash backwards at the right time, you'll fall straight down off the edge into a perfect edgehog. So pretty much you just dash forward, then dash backward with really good timing.

So yeah, unless you can somehow master the dashing thing, i'd say walking is easier.

I actually watched a Falco vid recently, where the Falco was using walking to edgeguard. His opponent had caught on the edge, and Falco would then start to walk away. When his opponent began coming up, the player (I'm assuming) smashed the C-stick back at him, and Falco whirled around with an fsmash to the face. KO. Pretty clever. It looks so improbable.

I walk to pull off an awesome combo (like) with falco on fox.

Needs a pretty decent percentage, lcancelled dair, start walking (for coolness) shl to stop the fox flying too far and smash f or u.

Walking is useful because you can move around and do ANYTHING out of it. If you dash, you can only (practically) do grabs, aerials, Up-smashes or F-smashes. Walking adds jabs, tilts, and D-smashes to your options, without having to jump-cancel or pivot anything.
