Are you kidding me? over has more depth than 95% of today's rapers COMBINED.
LMFAO no. Listen to some Skyzoo, Talib Kweli, Immortal Technique, Mos Def, Thaione Davis, J-Live, The Roots, Dynas, etc. Drake can't compare to them. AND they still rap today.
Yeah, but today's rappers suck LOL. Being better than them shows nothing, and quite frankly he isn't any better than them in my eyes. It seems like you need to expand your horizons, Dark Horse, as the people you stated are all fairly mainstream.
Agreed.
Thats exactly what I was wonderin
100% Agreed!
I got it up, and thanks.
Oh wait Lu is up there I just missed him.
Pharcyde aren't, you should put them up.
But yeah Cookie I really like this thread. This summer I'm going to check out more of the people posted, I don't know a lot of them.
I got them both up. Lupe i accidentally deleted.
THANKS
Underground is amazing, when you learn about it, you are amazed at what people say in their music.
Listen to over. He actually QUESTIONS his fame (they treat me like a legend, am I really this gold?/am I really to young to be feeling this old.) name another rapper that does that. Also, UGK doesn't get called "the greatest thing that ever happened to rap" by THE NEW YORK TIMES.
The New York Times doesn't know ****, Drake doesn't have the emotion that legends are made of, and his raps are sub par. He ONLY uses decent metaphors.
That's not deep. His lyrics are what they are, there's no hidden meaning or anything. What you here is what he means. Drake got called the greatest thing that ever happened to rap? Good for him, the New York Times critic that wrote that has the same opinion as you. Because he works for the New York Times does his opinion matter more than mine? **** that.
Agreed.
The New York Times is probably the most famous newspaper today. I think
his opinion does matter more. Good
lyrics don't have to be hidden, just well
thought out (I've heard a song who's
hidden meaning was getting drunk. Does that make it deep?).
His rhyme scheme is basic, not to mention that he doesn't use double meanings or wordplay at all.
No it doesn't, just more people will hear it and it will appeal to more, doesn't make it more important. That's one of the most ignorant things I heard today, almost as ignorant as saying Drake is a great rapper.
His lyrics either don't make sense or have no meaning to them at all.
You da ****ing bess, bess I eva had.
I like rap that tells a story within the rap, not rap about your own fame or that one love you had. This is why the one of the few raps I've actually put up with listening is my favorite, Dance with the Devil. At least that song made sense and got you thinking.
Dance with the Devil is amazing, if you like stories listen to Stan by Eminem, or listen to some of the artists I have on my list, like the Wu-Tang Clan for example.
Thanks.
Are you dumb? An opinion is not "correct" based on how famous the person making it is, it's simply what people think. Tom Cruise is famous, and he believes in Scientology. I don't believe in Scientology, and I'm not famous. Does that make Scientology true?
I prefer songs that do both. I don't see how doubting fame is either deep or well thought out. Rap should make the listener think about what they just heard, it shouldn't just be "man I want to **** some hoes and smoke some weed too."
I wholeheartedly agree, Guus. I didn't know you liked rap.
But yeah Dance with the Devil is a great song, it really makes you think about what you're listening to. Drake definitely does not do that.
Agreed to the fullest.
IGNORANCE! didn't I just give you a good example (they treat me like a legened, am I really this gold?/ Am I really too young to be feeling this old.) that is alot deeper than most rap songs. Your song example (whatever it is) is one of only a few that has deep lyrics (congrats for that). Also, not every rapper can be nominated for 2 Grammies before they release their first album.
It doesn't matter! That is not deep whatsoever, he's just indirectly flattering himself.
There are many, many, many more songs as deep as Dance with the Devil.
Except that one song makes my spine shiver.
Slippin' by DMX is a good example.
Anyways, Drake isn't even close to any of the people on my list.
Popularity means nothing.
