So I've had this roster sitting in my drafts for a long time, but recently I finally got back to it and properly finished it. This was more or less borne from a small discussion that was had after a new translation of an old interview for the original game came out. It's also something I've given some thought before, and so I wanted to put my thoughts down on paper. The pitch is as follows: what if Fighters Megamix got a sequel on the Dreamcast?

For those unfamiliar, Fighters Megamix was a crossover fighter SEGA released for the Saturn, primarily taking from Virtua Fighter and Fighting Vipers but having plenty of guests from other SEGA games, mainly the ones created by their famous arcade division AM2. You may know it for a lot of the wacky secret characters it had, such as the Hornet car from Daytona. I'm doing this hypothetical as if, in 2001, as the Dreamcast was coming to a close, we got a big celebratory crossover fighter on it.

That said, this is still going to be a heavily limited roster. Don't go around expecting a full-on all-out SEGA fest with Sonic and NiGHTS and Phantasy Star and the like, that wouldn't make a lot of sense given how the game was made. I am expanding the game's scope, but in a bit of a different direction. This was something that was teased in interviews from the time, and I wanted to really expand on it - the pitch for this game is essentially "SEGA AM All-Stars", meaning that this is going to be a crossover between a bunch of characters from SEGA's arcade divisions. I think this is probably the best way to do a scope expansion after the original game's focus on AM2, and it leads to a lot of fun potential while still having a more limited pool.

The roster will be 37, slightly increasing from the original's 32. That may not seem like much of a jump up, but there are a lot of new characters joining in. Realistically this would probably have more OCs, variants, etc....like the original, but I don't know exactly what I'd do there and I thought this would be a more fun way to do things for me. The original game mainly focused on and took its gameplay from Virtua Fighter 2 and Fighting Vipers, and now that it's one generation later, the main focus will be on characters and mechanics from Virtua Fighter 3 and Fighting Vipers 2. As such, we can knock out most of the roster already:

Virtua Fighter 3

1. Akira Yuki
2. Pai Chan
3. Jacky Bryant
4. Sarah Bryant
5. Lau Chan
6. Wolf Hawkfield
7. Jeffry McWild
8. Kage-Maru
9. Shun Di
10. Lion Rafale
11. Aoi Umenokoji
12. Taka-Arashi
13. Dural

Fighting Vipers 2

14. Bahn
15. Honey
16. Grace
17. Raxel
18. Picky
19. Sanman
20. Tokio
21. Jane
22. Mahler
23. B. M.
24. Charlie
25. Emi

So that's the main course. As in the original game, there would be "VF" and "FV" modes that hew closer to their respective games' gameplay, and I'd also like to throw in an extra team battle feature based on VF3tb if possible. So now let's get to the rest of the roster! Starting with our last two veterans:

26. Janet Marshall (Virtua Cop)
27. Taro Yamada (Rent A Hero)

I opted to cut a lot of the anciliary stuff to make room for new picks, but I thought those would be good to keep around. Janet is just a neat character from a popular series, and Taro feels like a good one to keep given his cult status, distinctive design and the fact that his series was brought back for the Dreamcast. And now, onto the new stuff! Starting with:

28. Bruno Delinger (Dynamite Deka)

The first pick to represent the AM1 division, it's the dynamite cop himself! I love me some Dynamite Deka, and I think Bruno is just a really fun character to add to a SEGA crossover, especially in a combat context where he can swing around all those wacky props. It's also a popular series that was gaining plenty of attention at the time, and is a natural fit for a fighting game. I was thinking of mainly basing him off of the second game since that's the more recent one that got a Dreamcast port, but I also quite like the first one's aesthetics so who knows.

29. Johnny (The House of the Dead)

Now we're getting into less conventional territory. HotD is one of the biggest arcade franchises SEGA had put out since the first Megamix, and while there are various ways one could represent the series, I felt like just simply going for a zombie would be the most fun and fitting for a game like this. So I opted for Johnny, the axe-wielding zombie from the second game. He'd have a simple but fun moveset and I think just having a zombie walking around is a cool distinct visual for this game.

30. Bass (SEGA Bass Fishing)

That's right, *****. This is Fighters Megamix. Anything goes here. If it's got a model, it's good to go. So as one of the resident Wacky Picks, I am adding A Fish. Yes, we are somehow going to rig this to have a fighting game moveset where it just kinda flops around. It's gonna be great.

31. Temjin (Virtual-ON)
32. Fei-Yen (Virtual-ON)

Moving onto the AM3 branch, we have the only other series with more than one rep! Virtual-ON was stupidly popular with Japanese fans at the time, and I felt it appropriate to add the series' two faces as a representative for one of SEGA's banner arcade franchises for the latter half of the 90s. They're cool mechs!!!!!!

33. Li Huang (Decathlete)

This is one of my stranger choices. Another representative for AM3, she comes from Decathlete, a pretty popular Olympic sports arcade game SEGA made. I wanted a character that straddled that line of being more off-the-beaten-path but still kinda sensible, and I opted for her. I was considering someone from Crazy Taxi or 18 Wheeler, but I felt an athlete would be more fun in a fighting game than just "driver". She's got a really cute design and could be pretty fun.

34. Spike (SpikeOut)

And here comes someone representing the newest kids on the block, Toshihiro Nagoshi's Amusement Vision! SpikeOut made a mark as a really innovative title made by a brand new arcade team at SEGA, and Spike is a natural fit for a game like this, and also I'm just fond of this series. It'd be interesting to see him get in, as his series never actually got any Dreamcast port.

So that's that for the more "current" choices. The last couple fighters will be moreso reaching into SEGA's past, to find weird cool stuff that could be added to spice up the roster.

35. Mr. Hang-On
36. Mobo (Bonanza Bros)

So first up, we've got the biker from Hang-On. He is literally going to beat you up with the bike. That is his moveset. Jokes aside, I wanted to represent one of SEGA's big mid-80s legacy hits, and this idea won out. Bonanza Bros. is an interesting one - I was debating between several choices from that "late 80s action game" era. My other main choices were the Werebear from Altered Beast and the Bad Brothers from Golden Axe. These may seem like strange choices for those franchises, but I thought they fit this roster as weird kinda jokey picks with an odd amount of prominence in JP SEGA media. Ultimately though, I went with the Bonanza Bros, as they had the most distinctive look and I thought it'd be funny to see them throwing hands. Around this time, I also came across an official Segagaga artbook that for whatever reason had them on a list of notable SEGA characters, and I thought that was pretty funny. I could have done the detective incarnations from Tant-R but I feel like these are less well-defined.

And finally.....

37. Robo Pitcher

Yes. The Robo Pitcher. The old SEGA toy. We need at least one fighter who isn't even a living thing. This is actually a scrapped idea the devs had for the original game, and it's funny enough that I decided to bring it back. I also just think it has a neat place in history as basically SEGA's equivalent to the Ultra Hand, this old iconic toy they like to go back to and reference all the time.

So....that's it! I think my biggest regret was not adding a Last Bronx character, but I just couldn't find anywhere on the roster where they felt right. One character in an interesting case is Amigo, being a unique character from a recently successful arcade game, but I opted to exclude him as he's still technically from a console division. I also thought of adding the Derby Owners Club horse. Yeah. Fighters Megamix is cool

POKÉMON BATTLE ARENA
A small concept I have come in mind after playing some Gundam Extreme Versus and Dissidia, as well to investigating some other arena fighting games. I love Pokken but honestly the concept of mixing arena fighter and 2D FG while cool in words its a bit strange in motion, so this is a sort of spiritual succesor.

The general concept is that there will be a lot of characters and you build a team of 3 (either alone, with the two Pokémon being controlled by CPU, or with friends), however they are classified by "Weight". Weight more or less is a way to talk about the strength of a Pokémon; there are 2000, 3000 and 4000 weight Pokémon, the maximum amount of "weight" a team can have is 8000 (named Capacity), so you must think in how you are going to distribute your strength, are you going to spend all in an over the top team or you are going to play safer with Pokémon with less raw damage but still having their own strengths that can ever surpass the higher tier ones with enough skilled hands. Note that when a Pokémon is left out of combat, it "consumes" the leftover weight cost, you can still revive until you are out of points, if the capacity amount is less than the weight of the Pokémon to be revived, it revives with an HP penalty equal to the amount of capacitiy left, being defeated without more capacity left is an automatic lose condition.

The gimmick here is that all your Pokémon will start at their base phase (with a few exceptions), and they will evolve during battle, and some characters can even get a temporal boost such as Mega Evolution!, usually Pokémon with a 3 phase evolution line tend to be more powerful than ones with only 2 or no evolutions at all, thought they need to work more to get this much power while the others can access to their peak at a much faster rate. A notorious exception is obviously the legendary Pokémon (that there are a few), most of them have 4000 weight points and since they don't need to evolve, they are usually at their peak since the beginning of the match, however to make things fair most of them would have some sort of gimmicky ways to access al their power or some sort of initial limitation, like Regigigas, who is under the effects of his ability and requires to wait a quite amount of time to fully start and turn into a demolishing machine.

This roster as I said is laaaaaaaaarge, mostly cuz my inspiration here is Gundam Extreme Versus, it's not as big as Versus but we are still talking that it has more or less 100 Pokémon there (not counting their evolutions).

Returning to an old concept: Disney Villains: War of the Wicked
No live action, and no reformed villains (with Pete being an exception since he's only really "good" when he's in shows that can't have him be evil) - also no digging super deep into obscure, acquired, or obscure and acquired stuff. Apologies to my GOAT Sharky the Sharkdog.

I'm starting to get the feeling you're viewing this like a checklist. I'm fine with discussion and criticism, but there needs to be, you know, actual discussion. Not "Where's XYZ?". I'm not making a ScreenRant Top 10 here, no character is owed inclusion.

For what it's worth, this is a really good roster. I will admit some of the curveballs surprised me, like the Silly Symphonies villains or Foxy Loxy. That, and any Disney fighting game roster with a Winnie the Pooh character in it makes me want to play it, including this one.

Although, if I may be honest, I question how villains like the Hydra, Tamatoa, or Chernabog would be re-sized to fighter status. Because I have a feeling they'd be shrunk anyway.

Furthermore, I also have a hunch Sharky would top your wishlist if such a game was created.

Another Smash thing but this time a bit more, curious.

Have you noticed how the early 2000's/2010's Smash fangames lowkey reshaped the fanbase? A lot of character that people might not have even know otherwise turned quite fan favorite options (like Lloyd thanks to SSF2), so I wanted to share what I would have do I was in charge on one of these fangames, the rules are that first the timeframe will be the same of these games, I'll take Crusade's development as my reference since I think it's closer to what I would like to do in comparison to SSF2. Unlike other Smash rosters I do, this one will have a lot more of bias, but also it must adjust to what there it was at that time, also since this is well, a fangame, everything must be under the possible amount, Crusade (the game I use as reference) has turned quite big but that's mostly cuz it has been out for more than a decade, so I'll be adding a schedule of when certain characters gets added.

I’ve entertained the idea of making a fangame before, and I’ll do something along the lines of SSF2 (maybe Super Smash Land would be better) as I have a negligible amount of experience with game development. I set secret fighters in brackets.

Been playing a lot of Robotnik's Ring Racers lately, and found a mod I loved that added a certain lunar crooner, and felt like making this:

McDonaldLand Grand Prix
Would use a photorealistic style evoking the 70s commercials as opposed to later, more colourful iterations, avoided characters directly based on food items. Easy unlockables in bold, hard unlockables in bold + italics
  1. Ronald McDonald
  2. Grimace
  3. Birdie
  4. Hamburglar
  5. Mayor McCheese
  6. Officer Big Mac
  7. Captain Crook
  8. Fry Kids
  9. Sundae
  10. The Professor
  11. CosMc
  12. Mac Tonight
  13. Happy Box
  14. The Menu (randomly selects one of the generic food props to be in the kart)
  15. MAC and Eric
  16. Hamburger Happy Clown
  17. Uncle O'Grimacey
  18. Mac Today (OC)
  19. Speedee
  20. Archy

Is Mac Today a sun-head and related to the breakfast menu? I wouldn’t mind the later iterations having alt costumes but it’s an interesting/fun choice to go with the 70’s aesthetic as a unifying one. Mac & Me is also a good pull.

Here's a super quick roster partially inspired by Super Smash Land

Mario Kart Land!

Releasing the same day as Super Mario Kart either alongside it or replacing it, depending on your own interpretation.

Similarly to how SMK takes heavily from Mario World, Kart Land takes heavily from Mario Land. Although stuff not present in Mario Land is still allowed to be included.

Being unique looking from behind is a very, very, important trait to have, and this dictated many of the decisions I've made for the roster. This resulted in the game sorta having a "Mushroom Kingdom vs Sarasaland" theme, which I'm running with.

Roster!
  • Mario (Middleweight) - The main man himself and definitely the least surprising pick. What may be surprising is the lack of Luigi, who's absent for being pretty indistinguishable from Mario from behind on a Game Boy. Maybe he appears in the awards ceremony though? Maybe he takes over Lakitu's role, driving a Sky Pop?
  • Toad (Lightweight) - Taking Luigi's place as Mario's sidekick, essentially. Picked over Yoshi for being closer in size to the other Lightweight Racer and for having a very distinctive cap.
  • Daisy (Middleweight) - Princess of Sarasaland. Peach is absent from the game because Daisy takes priority on Gameboy, and we can't afford to have two princesses on here for similar reasons to Luigi.
  • King Totomesu (Heavyweight) - Ruler of Birabuto. I always thought of him as the anti-bowser, a kind a noble king who's good friends with Daisy. The bosses and enemies in Mario Land were just brainwashed by Tatanga, afterall.
  • Tatanga (Lightweight) - The alien conquerer and villain of Mario Land. He's pretty short, shorter than Toad, even. I love this guy and he's half the reason this roster exists.
  • Bowser (Heavyweight) - King of the Koopas and the final driver in the roster. In the manual, it's stated Bowser & Tatanga are under some sort of secret alliance to win the Grand Prix, they think it's some super evil plan, but it honestly doesn't boil down to anything and they aren't even cheating so Mario and pals are just cool with them racing.
So that's the roster, small yet sweet I think! While I'm at it, here's the course themes I came up with, just themes though, like the original SMK. only the last theme is unique to only a single course.

Course Themes
  • Toad Road - The Mario Circuit equivalent. Pipes, Horsetail Plants, and Oil Slicks act as obstacles. Set in the Mushroom Kingdom.
  • Bira Desert - Set in the Birabuto Kingdom. Goombos, Piranha Plants, and Sandpits act as obstacles.
  • Muda Beach - Set in the Muda Kingdom. UFOs roam around as obstacles.
  • Blooper Bay - Based on the water levels from SMB, and set underwater. Cheep Cheeps & Bloopers act as obstacles. (Referred to as "Bloober Bay" in original release, Bloopers weren't called Bloopers until Paper Mario.)
  • Bowser's Castle - A tradition. Thwomps and Firebars act as obstacles.
  • Tatanga Space - Replaces Rainbow Road as the "final track set in space with little to no railing", due to a lack of color on the Game Boy. UFOs reappear as obstacles.
And thats it! Hope you like this roster! Lemme know if you have any thoughts! Was really fun making this.

  24. Dash (The Incredibles)
  25. Speed Demon (Marvel)
  26. Billy Whizz (The Beano)
  27. Nitros Oxide (Crash Bandicoot)
  28. Captain Falcon (F-Zero)
  29. Bolt (Disney's Bolt)
  30. Rainbow Dash (My Little Pony)
  31. Roary the Racing Car (Roary the Racing Car)
  32. Wizpig (Donkey Kong)
  33. Zeraora (Pokemon)
  34. Chick Hicks (Cars)
  35. Sweet Tooth (Twisted Metal)
  36. Lakitu (Mario Kart)
  37. Kwiky Koala (Kwiky Koala)
  38. Big Rig (Big Rigs)
  39. Axel (Twisted Metal)
  40. Rocky (SpongeBob SquarePants)

You might notice the roster is kinda bookended with very silly characters, and that was by intention - the average player would overestimate the fastest character's boosts and underestimate the slowest's benefits, befitting both source materials.

I like this idea, but I think Bulbasaur should be moved up to the 4000 weight section, just so that all of the Kanto starters can be within the same section.

Ngl I originally was going to repart the starters in different weight rates but after a while I forgot and Bulbasaur ended as the only one who wasn't sharing place with the rest lol. I would change it back but I'm quite very lazy for that rn. Just assume with your mind is changed :clueless:

Card Saga Wars-esque Game Roster
In chance you haven't heard of it, Card Saga Wars was a MUGEN project that tried to make an unique type of fighting game, using an unorthodox 5 buttons layout divided in two attack buttons, two assist button (the aforemented cards) and a special action button. The game was highly ambitious but it was sadly abandoned around 2010, a prototype has been released for a while and it shows how good the project could have been. This is not exactly a list to continue the roster, since its very well known what other characters they were thinking, but my own revision changing some characters based on what I think is more interesing or I like more. It still has in consideration is a MUGEN fangame so the roster will be limited to the amount of planned characters (as far as we know) that it was 33 (rounded to 34 for aesthetic sake), also this takes in account the time the game was created so most things are from 2012 and prior, with a few things that are allegedly coming from updates.

SSBU boss rework - unlockables
Essentially, each boss - except the Hands - is an unplayable variant on a playable character who would not be revealed before launch. Due to the lack of marketing, only 1P characters appear in this role. (as much as I prefer Dracula over Simon LMAO). Sorted by when first fought.
  1. King Hippo (Punch-Out!!) (only non-OC boss revealed before launch)
  2. Rayquaza (Pokemon)
  3. Madame Broode (Mario)
  4. OC light villain (design better fit for playable)
  5. Natural Killer Cyborg (Mother)
  6. Ghirahim (Zelda)
  7. Classic DK (Giant even in regular play) (Donkey Kong)
  8. OC dark villain (design better fit for playable)

An unusual idea popped into my mind a while ago: Mario & Sonic, but instead of being an Olympics crossover, it’s a kart racer. And more specifically, it's also Double Dash 2, with exactly double the racers, meaning forty, twenty per franchise. Only other ground rules were:

A: The game came out at least sometime around when the first Olympic crossover game came out, so this is being made during the mid-2000s.

B: Any character can have any engine class, like in Crash Team Racing: Nitro-Fueled, so no worrying over making sure the engine classes are as evenly distributed as possible.

Not exactly the most ideal lineup of duos, especially on the Sonic side (having Jet but not the other two rogues felt wrong, but at least Fang kinda works as a partner, and Blaze and Big, while very unconventional, is a pretty weirdly fitting (and hilarious) duo), but I think the duos work well enough, and both sides got to have some deep cut picks (that were slightly biased but aren't unreasonable).

I had entertained the idea of an SSBDS before, and Retromesh is providing their own proposed version of what SSBDS would look like (they plan on using thirty fighters). For this, I’ll use 2006 as my release timeline, which means development starts sometime in 2003/2004 presumably (let’s say after Kirby Air Ride).

What if Nintendo asked me, a random dude, to pick the roster and the returning tracks for Mario Kart World?
Mario Kart World is upon us and I, for one, am very, very, VERY excited. I don't want to get too deep into the discourse surrounding the game, because so far it seems that it has mostly negative feelings attached and I don't want to let people on the internet ruining my enjoyment about something I like so far. With that being said, whilst I ADORE the underlying idea of the game, I don't really vibe with the roster being this massive, as I tend to like smaller, more focused rosters better. On top of this, I decided to remake the selection of retro tracks for the game, changing a handful of them. My only rule, in this case, is that if I drop a track with a certain environment/style, I must pick another one with the same environment (e.g., I drop a desert track, I replace it with another desert track). Without any further ado, let's-a-go! (also spoilers for Mario Kart World's track selection, I guess)
