You can put that in a spoiler tag, y'know.

And I'm sorry, but Shulk is anything but a stereotypical anime swordfighter. I find it sickening that people will jump to that conclusion so readily without bothering to look into his character.

Spoiler, but does [REDACTED] being unable to save [REDACTED] from being [REDACTED] (despite knowing it was going to happen) count as a failure?
Is there a chance of success? If not, then it's a cutscene and loses a great amount of its drama and impact for me because, again, it's predetermined.

The greatest sense of loss I feel in a game is when I lose something I could have saved. The greatest sense of victory is when I save or gain something I could have lost. Especially when that loss, or gain, is permanent. The more dire the odds, the sweeter the satisfaction. I also don't like being told that 'I should like this character' or that 'this character is obvious comic relief, laugh at their antics', which is what a lot of games(especially anime-style ones) do. In FFT, I actually dismissed TG Cid. Yeah, the most overpowered unit in the game. I kicked him out in favor of my generic units because I'd forged personalities and relationships with them and I know I risk them every time we step on the battlefield(lol what a nerd). Who's this yahoo and what right does he have to take their place? Power? Who cares?

Despite its simplicity, there's a mod called Brutal Doom in which you can save fellow Marines from demonic slaughter. CAN, being the key word, since if you're spotted and you take too long they'll be butchered and the body will lay there as a reminder of your failure. If you're fast enough upon being spotted however(and accurate enough with your weapons, I found out friendly fire isn't when I unloaded a rocket launcher into a dark monster-filled cage to hear a very human scream among the death cries), you can save them. That's accomplishment and satisfaction, at least for me. If the spoiled character's relationship can't be salvaged, then its loss has no real impact on me. I'm sure folk thought Aerith's death scene in FFVII was one of the most infuriating and saddening things that could have happened to the player. I barely registered it because I never used Aerith and quite frankly just didn't engage with her(I was a Barret/Red XIII kinda dude).

I'm not saying you can't like Shulk, I'm saying this is why I don't.

Isn't that more a fault of the game rather than Shulk himself?

But you're saying you don't like Shulk's gameplay mechanics, not Shulk himself as a character...You're talking about how you forge personalities and relationships with characters and then say Shulk looks like a typical anime character and that's why you don't like him. There's LITERALLY a feature of Xenoblade called Affinity that makes you build relationships with not only your party-members but with all the towns and locations in the game. Not saying you have to love or even like Shulk after hearing this, i'm just bringing it to your attention...

I have to be able to emphasize with a character in order to like them. If the game can't get me to do that in its storytelling, then I pretty much won't.

Not all games can be like Heavy Rain or Mass Effect where every event that happens has multiple solutions, either.
No debate here. Although I will say that Cage is a bit of a ponce(Beyond did nothing for me. I can excuse bad gameplay to a point, but an unkillable protagonist...).

Right, I'm quite ignorant of Xenoblade's mechanics and actually leave room for the notion that there could be a really solid game under there(and, apparently there is or it's just really good at hooking people in given the whirlwind around it). I'll just never know because the styling turns me off and doesn't do enough for me to want to investigate it further.

Then might i suggest watching a few of Chuggaaconroy's Let's Play episodes of it? It does a great job of showcasing the game and you can get an idea of why people like Shulk and it costs you nothing.

Same reason I lost interest in Skyrim the moment they said, 'You're the dragonborn.' I don't want to be the chosen one, that makes my success predetermined and lame. I want to be the yahoo that comes from left field and has maybe a 50/50 shot at best of ridding the world of evil.
Xenoblade actually plays around with the "chosen one" trope a lot.

So yes, Shulk is the chosen one. ...Chosen by an evil god, Zanza. To help him destroy the universe. The first 80% of the game is Shulk getting manipulated to Zanza's will. And the instant he first breaks from Zanza's plan, by not killing Egil, he gets shot in the back, only surviving thanks to the intervention of another god. He's also not chosen by some ancient prophecy. He's chosen 'cause he happened to be in the right spot at the right time. The remaining 20% of the game is Shulk specifically fighting against the guy who chose him.

So how would you guys feel that instead of Adam Howden reprising his role as Shulk, Nintendo hired an unknown American VA to voice him?
I would be awfully mixed. I would be glad that Shulk is in it! But... not having Adam reprise his role as Shulk and have someone else voice as him would take away from Shulk. Like, it wouldn't feel like Shulk to me.

@ BluePikmin11 BluePikmin11 : I want. :0

Also, Shulk isn't a "generic anime" swordsman at all. He's pretty much a normal human being just wanting to live a normal life, not one of those usual arrogant and pretentious JRPG protagonists thinking they're badass and all that. Plus, I don't think it's fair to use the term "anime" as a con or insult. In fact, we should have have more anime-looking characters in video games because western gaming is completely dominating the industry. Diversity is good.

Terrible, even if they aren't unknown. Hell, they'd be better off using files ripped from XC.

Also, BluePikmin, how could you make that list and not put me on it?

Do you guys think we should get @ SmashChu SmashChu to update the support list? We should try to reach to 100 before Shulk is confirmed.
Smashchu tends to be pretty busy with real life. I would love to update it. If support your quest for 100 supports. If it gets there (or close), I'll add it.

And really, if you want something in the OP, or at least to consider it, just send me a message. I'll get to it.

@ BluePikmin11 BluePikmin11 or SmashChu, I am confused as to which person I am supposed to respond to; but can I join the tea party? Shulk is certainly a character that I support, the roster needs more English accents.

@ BluePikmin11 BluePikmin11 You still haven't added me as a supporter? Well, what are you waiting for?! I want to be on this list of people with good tastes too!

The greatest sense of loss I feel in a game is when I lose something I could have saved. The greatest sense of victory is when I save or gain something I could have lost. Especially when that loss, or gain, is permanent.
Man, you must love playing Fire Emblem then. But uh... don't most games have linear paths for you to follow without dire consequences? Seems to me like you'd be missing out on many classics because of this.

Not really a fan of Fire Emblem because of 'cool' swords. I prefer a nice and standard steel sword for my fantasy goings(don't get me started on lightsabers. >.<; ).

Is there a chance of success? If not, then it's a cutscene and loses a great amount of its drama and impact for me because, again, it's predetermined.
How many games are like this? This seems like ridiculous expectations on for a game with a deep story. Either there's like millions of hours of content to accommodate every possible failure, or failures still end up meaningless in the grand scheme and quickly reversed through some silly thing anyway. Would it be such a big difference in Skyward Sword if Impa or something saved you after losing a boss fight and then it just went on as normal?
heh, I actually used to daydream about some game being like this though... It would be reaally cool.

anyway @ BluePikmin11 BluePikmin11 if our goal is 100 you can add me lol

You know, usually I recommend that everyone play Xenoblade regardless of their tastes in gaming, but uh... in your case, something tells me this is gonna be a much harder sell....

The game has to sell me on its merits, and 'cool anime scenes' just don't do anything for me. A great system and intuitive control scheme may be buried under there, but I'm just not willing to dig.

I'm tired of infallible heroes. Same reason I lost interest in Skyrim the moment they said, 'You're the dragonborn.' I don't want to be the chosen one, that makes my success predetermined and lame. I want to be the yahoo that comes from left field and has maybe a 50/50 shot at best of ridding the world of evil. The fact that it was my triumph and not some prophecy's foreboding makes it sweeter, in my opinion.
The game's merits? Fantastic story, characters, music, gameplay, world, art direction, and size. (Size in not just the literal scale, but in customization that's really intricate, and how many quests and side things there are for you to do.) These things aren't something that's just buried under there, they are at the forefront of the game, making it amazing from the beginning. It is completely unnecessary to dig.

Shulk is also anything but infallible, and while he may seem like the chosen one, that may not always be the best thing in the world. That trope is subverted quite well. Really, he is no generic swordsman, and simply because the game was made in Japan and has that sort of visual style does not mean he's a generic anime hero.

three things IMO that makes shulk stand out from a "Genetic blond sword fighter" is
1. He did not want to be the hero the only reason he chased after the mechion to begin with was to get revenge for the person who died
2. He goes on more then one time telling how he hated being able to see the future and shows conflict with it
3. He does not see himself as a badass like most "Genetic Blond Sword Fighters" do he admits without help from others he would not be able to get as far as he has

People that look at a single "potential" thing that irks them about something and then write off an amazing experience because of it are the worst.

I'm sorry, but that sort of thing is my number 1 pet peeve.

Oh, and Shulk is anything but "another Cloud" as it were.

I just want to make it a rule that you either have to acquire and play Xenoblade, or watch a play through of it all the way through before making a comment on the merit of the characters or the game itself.

This is pretty much the reason why...
I want Shulk to use the Monado Replicas. Not only would they be good for matching with Shulk's alt colors (example: Monado Saga + Stellar outfit), but it also would do Shulk's character more justice by having him fight as himself as opposed to being guided by the game's buttock-exposed antagonist.

As for the Final Smash, it's hard to say if Shulk should wield the True Monado, since it's meant to make him a god/kill Zanza. However, I can't think of anything else. It could work based on it's high attack power and it being only temporary. After all, most Final Smashes make you invincible.

I do believe 100% we will get shulk at the next direct or whenever they announce a newcomer since Shulk is very highly wanted both in the east and west

Honestly, I would put him at 25% for the next Direct.
25% Shulk
25% Chrom
25% Chorus Men
25% Some other newcomer
I am hoping for Shulk in the next Direct, but I won't expect it. Here's hoping that we will see him next month!

Chorus men if he is in I see him being a hidden WTF character. Chrom maybe but seeing as we already have marth and Ike I think if he is in (I prefer Robin myself) but if he is in I think he will be hidden. Only two characters I can see as of right now being announced is Ridley and Shulk and since I'm guessing they will have a direct near smash launch in japan Shulk would make the most sense since he is wanted really badly in the east where Ridley is wanted mosty only in the west so it would make more sense to hype up the japanese group with Shulk then Ridley

Add me as a Shulk supporter; he's the only newcomer I want/need. I can't wait for his reveal (unless he's a secret character).
