I have not played the game, but I want him in.
And that speaks for itself.

The video was not too impressive, but it was nice to see Shulk in the smash scene regardless....even though this is not real. I'm sure he'll look much better when Smash 4 releases

Finally got through all of the thread. Though, I wish you guys would spoil things more regularly. Towards the beginning were a lot of unmarked spoilers I kind of read without realizing at the time. I don't recall anything concrete (thankfully, barring something about Flora I believe), but it would help for those who support his inclusion yet haven't gotten the funds together to get the game. A hundred dollars is hard for me to have lying around sadly.

Sorry to hear that Mirron. I glanced back myself after reading your post and found some minor things here and there, but a lot of the major aspects of the game weren't spoiled. Xenoblade has some nice twists, though some of the game may be a tad predictable at times. Overall the story is amazing. Hopefully you forget any tiny things you picked up in the thread before you get to play it, which you will not regret. Probably my favorite Wii game and one of the best from last gen.

Since Sakurai said something about not doing a full blown story mode like Subspace, do you guys think he will stick to a more elaborate adventure mode in the same vein as melee's with diverse worlds based on the various games, all culminating into a boss encounter with someone from the character's respective franchise? Ex. Mega Man fits Yellow Devil.......Shulk fights Metal Face

Possibly.

My ideal "story mode" would be some vague and simple reason for fighting and then you go through scrolling stages from each franchise and at the end of each stage you fight a boss character from that franchise. One thing I didn't like from Brawl is how many enemies there were unrelated to Nintendo franchises.

What would an Animal Crossing boss be though? XD

A scorpion tied to a balloon is the AC boss. It's the hardest boss in video game history. :troll:

What do you think Shulk's victory theme would be based on?

I just watched a video with the origins of victory themes and a lot of them come from the title screen music of their respective games. Only probably is the Xenoblade Chronicles title screen music is very mellow and relaxing...it's not something you could even remix.

The fact that the enemies were 90% original and primarily forgettable was one of my major gripes with Subspace. Taboo is one of the few exceptions. There are a plethora of minor enemies to choose from all of the Nintendo franchises so I hope they draw from that vast pool this time around. I like your idea about the side scrolling levels being inspired by franchises as well. Maybe even do mixtures of multiple franchises in one level, sort of like a worlds collide thing. I'd make the AC boss Resetti because I always hated him appearing back in the original when I was younger. Tom Nook would work if they had some reasoning behind it, though I love the idea of an evil house lol.

When we discussed this in previous posts, I think people wanted part of you will know our names, the secret area jingle, or even part of engage the enemy among others. You're right in saying the main theme would be difficult to incorporate, but I wouldn't put it past Sakurai's all-star team to compose an appropriate remix of it. I'm just hoping there is a good wealth of Xenoblade songs in the game. Excluding Metal Face, I am not entirely sure who else would be a boss candidate depending on how much of the game would be spoiled....There is always the Mechonis though.

I could see the Gaur Plains music being incorporated into a victory theme for Shulk.

It's one of the first major locations in the game and for me playing it was the first real "woah, this game is freaking huge" moment.

It's also one of the first themes I think of when I think of Xenoblade Chronicles.

True. None of the name drops really spoil anything barring telling me this or that is in there. And my comment was mostly for people to watch for it in the future. However, I don't know when I'll be able to get Xenoblade. Just lost my job Saturday, so while I have the vacation money, trying to avoid spending it on anything frivolous (especially a hundred dollar game). If I get a new job soon though I'll splurge and buy it, I want to try the game pretty badly. I haven't had a new RPG in a long time, and the mage character sounds like fun to play as, so probably who I'd be using.

It's hard now that the game has been out for a year. As for getting a change to play it, I'd look into a Wii emulator for the PC. It may be better to try it there than to hunt down a copy of the game (which may be expensive).

They're all going to be a hundred or more, unless I'm monitoring the internet constantly, but I doubt someone will drop it for less. And my laptop has a hard time running easy free to play games, I doubt it'd run a Wii well at all. I'll get it sometime, but I didn't hear about this a year ago. Which sucks, since it means now it's immensely expensive.

Yeah, I'm in the same boat too. I've been able to find both Pandora's Tower and the Last Story, but I can't find Xenoblade anywhere. ;_;

It's too bad, because this game looks awesome.

and that soundtrack. I have no words to describe how good it is.

Last Story is at my nearest Gamestop. However, finding out I'd have to be Zael the entire time has somewhat dampened my desire to get it. I may still yet, but I prefer being able to be the more magey characters.

And I only heard a couple songs from Xenoblade, but it sounded good. But yeah, I'm going to continue my quest to try and get Xenoblade, it should be in my game collection.

I was just thinking I would love if Sakurai could include this song from X:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gyb_X8XsxvU

Such a small snippet already has me giddy. They wouldn't need to change anything either. It's perfect. It would make great battle music.

They probably won't include anything from X though, maybe if X comes out early in the year and smash bros later in the year. It would be cool if the song gets released in full before smash bros they could put it in to be played on a Xenoblade Chronicles stage.

God that would be great. Even if Shulk isn't in the game the music and a stage really need to happen.

Does anyone else feel that Shulk deserves to be in to rep Monolith Soft themselves moreso than just to rep Xenoblade Chronicles?

They already have quite a history under Nintendo: Baiten Kaitos, Xenosaga, Soma Bringer, Disaster: Day of Crisis, Xenoblade Chronicles, Project X Zone and the upcoming X title which looks fantastic. They even helped in the development of Brawl (according to their Wikipedia page), Skyward Sword and Animal Crossing: New Leaf.

Also I was thinking, Monolith Soft don't seem to really create franchises so much as games with similar themes. (The Xeno games all seem to have mecha themes) So I think if you're going to denounce Shulk for only being in one game then you'll likely end up denouncing any character Monolith Soft creates.

We should focus on the development company too and not just the franchises.

Out of curiousity, how is the Last Story? Does it hold up well against the other major JRPG games such as Xenoblade? I saw it the other day in the store and considered picking it up.

That song in the X trailer is very good and always gets stuck in my head whenever I hear it. Bummer for everyone who was not able to purchase Xenoblade when it was normal price. I luckily got the last copy near me.

Monolith is second party now, so that may impact Shulk's chances. I like to stay optmistic and believe he will definitely be in, but we won't know for sure until we get the confirmation. I'd prefer if they picked characters based on franchise and not development company because then we may end up with some odd choices in the resulting characters. The only positive I can think of at the moment would be Isaac gets in for Camelot, Next level brings in Little Mac, Monolith brings in Shulk, Retro brings in Ridley. Maybe that isn't such a bad idea afterall, but characters should be chosen simply based on merit, which Shulk has

I've heard great things about Last Story but I can't tell you on a personal account as to how it holds to Xenoblade. And last time I checked Monolith was first party unless they recently made a change to second party?

I didn't mean to only base it on development company, but it should be one of the factors taken into consideration.

Instead of only looking at the characters from one angle.

Yeah, that song is amazing. On X, the game doesn't have the same feel Xenoblade had. That game felt like you were in a magical and different place. Everything in this game looks bland right now. Maybe it's the color scheme, but it just doesn't have that same punch.

Monolith is still first party. Nintendo bought the remaining shares from Namco a while back.

I prefer the Last Story's combat to Xenoblade, but it's a shorter game. But it has my favorite combat out of any JRPG, probably ever. Xenoblade has a better story. The Last Story has better visuals that push the Wii to its limits. I think it has a lot of elements in which other JRPGs should follow. And it reunited Hironobu Sakaguchi and Nobuo Uematsu together. I definitely recommend picking it up.

That X song is really great. I hope to have it in if we get Shulk.

Monolith is first party now, increasing his chances. I think they 96% owned by Nintendo, and the other 4% is themselves. That definitely helps Shulk over other RPG sword users like Isaac.

I forgot about all of those counter examples in the current roster. People tend to just say whatever supports their opinions and neglect that sort of information. Wonder if the new smash will have a new form of assist or item in terms of other characters or summons along the lines of pokeballs and assist trophies, though I can't really think of much they can add in that area.

Here's a brawl hack I found of Shulk and Sharla fighting in a free for all. Had trouble finding much else on Xenoblade regarding hacks

Those mods aren't really the best done, and Shulk works the best with Ike's move pool. As far as other Xenoblade mods, Rikki, Dunban, Dickson, and Mumkhar have been made as simple model swaps.

I just which they'd all get updated, as they are pretty outdated.

Woops, I meant to say Monolith is first party now. Even though Isaac and Shulk are both sword users and are from JRPGs, they are completely unique characters due to psynergy and the monado arts. I'll definitely look into getting the Last Story soon, thanks everyone for the feedback. The only problem is that Shin Megami Tensei IV will proably consume me for a very long time. On a side note, I love Atlus and cannot wait for the crossover Wii U game.

If I knew anything about hacking in smash bros, I would try to make Shulk and give him a new moveset, but that isn't happening anytime soon.

I feel like Monolith is purposely keeping X in mystery by not revealing too much except the epic scale of the game and may be holding back for some big reveal of something...story? Link to Xenoblade? We do not even know the real title at this point.

Next time I have some free time I'm going to attempt my first moveset for Shulk, should be fun.

You know, one characteristic of Shulk that would be interesting is the concept of a character that can benefit team members in Team Battle. I say this because a handful of the arts he learns gives allies benefits, especially the special Monado arts.

I reeeeeeeeeeeeally wish I had bought Xenoblade when it was still 60 bucks instead of the average 125 that it goes for now. I guess I'll just have to wait until X to get into the franchise.

Would definitely love to see Shulk in as much as I liked Xenoblade, in some ways I kind of seeing that a bit out there, but know knows.

Xenoblade is declining from popular view as it's not really the "hot" game anymore, therefore the spike of popularity that recent releases cause is sadly decreasing.

Shulk is kind of a weird situation, Xenoblade is a wonderful game, but the circumstances surrounding him are a little odd due to the knowledge in the west being mostly a result of Operation Rainfall and considering hes' a sword user not all that different from Fire Emblem characters which have a much longer list of people that are wanted from that series.

Though there are several unique things you can do with Shulk, I personally believe it's a long shot as much as I'd like it to happen.
