Shulk is rather lucky to have had his popularity peak right around the time the roster was likely being decided, so even though it's decreasing a bit now, like Habanero said, at this point it doesn't matter much anyway.

Basically. Character demand fluctuates a lot when the game is announced and changes more when characters are announced. The opinions now will vary and don't mean much.

Xenoblade as a whole is probably one of the most conveniently released titles out there when you think about it.

I'd like to think that Xenoblade being a big title throughout an overall lackluster generation makes Shulk stand out. The game itself was surrounded by a lot of hype, and while it isn't up there with Mario, Pokemon or Zelda in popularity, I believe Xenoblade Chronicles has a damn good chance of getting a spot in Smash 4.

If only I was able to find a copy of the game at a not-insane price... Sigh. Did they just under produce the game or something? I really want to play it sometime but I don't think I'll be able to.

That's true. Other than Xenoblade, the big Wii titles were the usual: SMG, TLOZ, DK, etc. among others. I retain my optimism for Shulk despite the inactivity found on this thread recently. The fact that the pics of the day are now starting to reveal things, though slowly, I am excited each day for a random reveal, but I still think the big reveals will be saved for Nintendo Directs. Shulk in smash bros would be a massive boost for the series in terms of recognition, maybe even aiding in promoting the new game. There was that recent mini direct, but it probably won't be too long before Nintendo has a big one with some news.

I wouldn't say the last generation was lackluster exactly, I think it has to do with the fact that Xenoblade Chronicles is probably one of the biggest cases of a sleeper hit in video games, not in the sense of raw sales like Pokemon or Angry Birds were (both of which are the biggest sleeper hit franchises in video game history period in that regard), but rather the circumstances surrounding the game.

Prior to Xenoblade Chronicles, Nintendo was rather stingy about creating or publishing new IPs, and whenever they do usually the products were usually quickly buried underground due to a lack of interest from consumers. This is why Nintendo usually plays it safe with stuff like Super Mario Bros., The Legend of Zelda, Pokemon, and such. Even when the company Monolith Soft was bought out by Nintendo in 2007, that sense of experimentation was still in tact. The company around that time was trying to gain footing and developed two games out of it, Soma Bringer and Disaster: Day of Crisis. However, due to again that stingy feeling towards IPs, both games had minimal distributions and because of it both games kind of tanked. Xenoblade Chronicles however was the game that defied a lot of obstacles.

Why did Xenoblade Chronicles manage to get so much attention, and how did it avoid the same fate as the company's previous experiments? It might have to do with a combination of different things. First off, Xenoblade Chronicles was developed by the same team that previously worked with the already critically acclaimed Xenosaga trilogy, and even if you ignore that the company itself is essentially comprised of former members of Squaresoft, which used to be a forerunner on RPGs back in the 80's and 90's. If you factor in either, you can see why people would be interested in Xenoblade Chronicles right from the start.

However, the second reason and probably the reason why Xenoblade Chronicles got attention is because it's a very bold game, a game so bold that it sticks out from the typical demographic Nintendo usually encourages and ignores a lot of philosophies Nintendo games usually stamp onto their products. It was a game that introduced a very bold world, it was cinematic, it was expansive, it pushed the system to create a lot of rather amazing visuals, there was a much more rich story with fleshed out characters and scenarios.

This more bold direction for a Nintendo developed game is probably why it got so much attention and praise. This eventually lead to it's rather infamous localization movement. Even with such a bold game that felt like such a fresh breath when paired up with the typical Nintendo flare, there was a reluctance to distribute the game, possibly out of fear that it won't catch on with the audience. Which is when Operation Rainfall came in to give out the word that there IS an audience for this game and a desire to have it localized to other countries. Though it took about two years and limited distributions, eventually the staff at Nintendo noticed this movement and decided to localize the game, first in Europe in 2011 and then North America in 2012. The game was a mild financial success due to limited availability, but it was a really critical success, occasionally even refereed to as the best JRPG of this generation or even all time.

The story of Xenoblade Chronicles is not exactly ending there either. It's clear that after the events that happened, the company Monolith Soft wants to continue the spirit of Xenoblade Chronicles, even try to surpass what Xenoblade Chronicles has established. Of course, this game I'm referring to is X for the Wii U.

Whether or not this game is connected to Xenoblade Chronicles remains to be seen, but it's pretty obvious what was in Xenoblade Chronicles is going to continue in spirit and execution. It's also worth mentioning that unlike Xenoblade Chronicles, there isn't an attempt to brush it under the rug. This game is getting a fair share of publicity, and this game is going to have a consistent localization in every major region sometime in 2014. This says that after the events of Xenoblade Chronicles, there is much more confidence with getting this game the attention it deserves from both fans and critics. Not only that, but a game like this is a great opportunity to show off the true capabilities of the Wii U, something Xenoblade Chronicles also tried to do with the Wii.

As for Super Smash Bros., that is ambiguous about how much attention Xenoblade Chronicles will get in that series. However, it's pretty obvious that the game Xenoblade Chronicles is not your typical Wii series game, it feels rather big and because of that it's rather hard to ignore. In fact, it would be a challenge to ignore such a game that defied so many things. But of course, things remain to be seen and nobody can predict the future. But it's safe to assume that this game will get attention in some way, especially considering that game has a lot to work with on pretty much every category (characters, stages, music, etc.)

Habanero, what is your opinion on the series getting the Fire Emblem treatment? As in, getting Shulk (like Marth in Melee) and then the protagonist of X (like Roy). I'm not too sure of this myself, and i'd rather just see us get Shulk, but it's an interesting idea to consider.

We probably wont see a situation like Roy again. He was a byproduct of the clones. Sakurai needed similar characters and he though Roy was cool.

Don't really care too deeply about it in the end. I would have more enthusiasm if we even knew the identity of the new guy.

I've been thinking this too. It will surely be hard for Sakurai to ignore Xenoblade Chronicles given it's obvious quality and expansiveness. It's just one game....but what a game that is. It feels wrong to judge Xenoblade Chronicles negatively for only having one game when the quality is just so huge and obviously apparent.

Personally I do believe Shulk will be a playable character in the upcoming smash bros. Not only does he come from an amazingly high quality game....but he would also be a representative for Monolith Soft. He also has great moveset potential using the Monado, which to put it bluntly is a magical laser sword that can see into the future. I just feel it will be a case of very bizarre judgement if Sakurai doesn't pick up on this....

Not to mention there is likely a fair amount of goodwill between Nintendo and Monolith Soft since they're heavily hyping up their new X game. Nintendo clearly values them now more than ever before.

Did you guys know that some of the Monolith Soft development team assisted Sakurai in developing Brawl, specifically during the preliminary stages? From Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monolith_Soft Sakurai enlisted their help along with other studios. From Wiki: "Help from a variety of Studios such as Monolith Soft and Paon was enlisted..." This being said, I think it's safe to assume that Sakurai at least acknowledges Monolith, and if they are again assisting Sakurai with development, then Shulk must have been considered at the least.

Although he does have to compete with the likes of Little Mac, Isaac, etc. for misc. franchise representation, I think that other than those two mentioned above, Shulk has importance over other characters from misc. franchises. He would rep both the fast rising Monolith Soft and the Nintendo JRPG genre. His game was a masterpiece, and as seen with X, Xenoblade Chronicles will atleast receive a spiritual successor, if not a direct one (Remember the Shulk-esque face shown in the first X trailer?) The fact that X was even shown at E3 means that this game will be supported like any other Nintendo AAA title. It is already receiving a lot of publicity as the first "true" Next-Gen Nintendo game. I have a feeling that Xenoblade Chronicles has started something special, a series which could become Nintendo's Final Fantasy. That being said, Shulk deserves to be in this game, period. Little Mac, Isaac, and Shulk should be the the first of their respective misc. franchises.

Yeah I read about that, although Sakurai said that being helped by a certain studio doesn't affect what character he puts into the game. I think that was moreso to do with Namco Bandai helping him with the upcoming game didn't mean Pac-Man would necessarily be in, but it probably still relates to Monolith Soft too.

I don't think Xenoblade Chronicles really needs a crutch to get a representative in smash bros though. It's value is there for all to see....it's either good enough for Sakurai or it isn't.

Shulk is easily Monolith Soft's most eligible and noticeable possible representative to date. I would hope that wouldn't go unnoticed by Sakurai.

I don't think Shulk would get in because of that, nor would he need it. He's got quite a bit of demand now and is the most popular character from a series not in Smash (with mac behind him).

I was just thinking about the character reveals. We would probably get a trailer for Shulk right around when X is going to be released if Sakurai follows the same trend he did with Pikmin 3, maybe even during a game specific direct. Otherwise, he would remain a secret character. I don't really think Monolith helping with Brawl creates any ins for Shulk. However, I agree that Monolith is an up and coming studio for Nintendo that will reach Retro status with their franchises.

That is if X is released before Smash Bros 4.

Also what happened for Captain Olimar doesn't necessarily set a trend, that's just one occurence. We should wait to see if anything similar happens with Pokemon X & Y (Pokemon Trainer or Mewtwo unvealing) before we think about calling it a trend.

Shulk is not going to simply sneak onto the roster in that way, a character should be included under their own merits. One past event is only going to go so far, and it's most likely not going to influence anything in the end anyway.

However, I can say that the Kyoto studio most likely did help with the development of these games. That studio appears to focus on assisting other developing teams towards completion.

According to that Wiki page, the Kyoto team opened up in 2011 and have thus far aided in Pikmin 3, Skyward Sword, and New Leaf. Anything prior has been done by the original or main Monolith Soft team. We can't tell for sure, but I speculate both Smash 4 and X will be released towards the later half of next year.

This might be an odd statement to make, but I kind of like to compare Shulk to Ike. Not in the context of character, but rather the context of support. Ike was kind of like Shulk during pre-Brawl, his support was more small then a lot of other heavy hitters out there at the time, but people liked the character and the game he came from.

X does seem to be getting far more international attention and Nintendo seems more willing at this point to promote it considering how Nintendo is generally extremely hesitate about this kind of stuff. It would at least appear if Xenoblade definitely struck a chord that Nintendo often has issues with. Would be interesting if they came full circle with it in Smash, but as with any character I still hold my doubts.

I was thinking about Shulk earlier. If we are going off of what a character will bring to Smash Bros., Shulk may actually bring more than we expect.

Considering Shulk is the first protagonist of a potentially important series down the road, branching off and creating sequels actually helps Shulk. A series gets in to represent something down the line and to last a long time (besides retros, but you know what I mean).

Basically, after Shulk gets added, that opens the door to add more characters from the series. Later on, add a newer protagonist that is popular alongside Shulk. Or a supporting character. Kind of like Fire Emblem. Not so much to add the newest character, but visualize Shulk as the Marth, and then the "X" protagonist as another Lord. Then it goes on, and on, and on. Opens up more potential to expand on the series, because unless we see a huge increase in newer series, Sakurai is going to have his work cut out for him to provide new characters.

Shulk's got the unique moveset, popularity, and potential for growth. I'd say that alone makes him a great choice.

I'd say shulk is likely.
Also, I came up with a new idea for a final smash: Monado precognition.
When this move is activated, the opponents lose control of their characters. The color scheme changes to grayscale as the computer decides exactly what the computer is going to do for the next 8 or 9 seconds, unless impeded. The full plan is played out. Then, the color returns to normal, and all opponents begin to perform their destiny in slow motion. Shulk moves at normal speed and is free to do whatever he wishes during this time.

Well, if a series that can provide a lot of characters is in demand, then Xenoblade will be a good contender for this. Of course, this can be either be a good thing or a bad thing down the line.

I kind of wonder how a character like Shulk would play, the Monado is kind of large weapon when the blade is open though I know that all can be adjusted in size and in the game Shulk is kind of a character that focus heavily on positioning and moving around his target alot with his special attacks, kind of curious how something like that would translate over..

Hmmm...maybe give him extra knockback if he lands with backslash behind an enemy? Stuff like that would make him plenty unique on it's own.

I imagine Shulk being a medium weight character. I'm all for visions being the focus of his final smash.

I like where you are going with this but maybe the players should be able to control what they can do for a few seconds and then their characters would perform the same actions automatically instead of a computer deciding what they would do. Meanwhile, Shulk may easily kill them possibly using a powered up version of the Monado....spoilers or not depending on who Sakurai would work it in. I've said it a plethora of times and I'll say it again, Shulk has a good chance of making it into the game.

Hmmm...maybe give him extra knockback if he lands with backslash behind an enemy? Stuff like that would make him plenty unique on it's own.
That is a great idea as it would also be a nice tribute to the gameplay style of Xenoblade. The Monado arts seem to be a likely option for the specials, though the difficulty comes in choosing which combination and how they will be implemented.

I dont know if this has been previously mentioned, but the same voice actor definitely has to be Shulk in Smash. Overlooking the syncing issues at times, the cast was phenomenal and the game has many memorable quotes ripe for taunts as well as victory cries.

Shulk revamped moveset with Talent Gauge. Thoughts and comments? Also the Final Smash has a slight spoiler in it, it's the last attack listed so feel free to avoid it. Or not. Whatever.

Shulk will incorporate a hidden meter called the Talent Gauge that charges his Monado with every successful attack based on the number of hits connected. Once the meter is full the Monado will shine brightly, the player must activate Battle Soul (No health will be taken away) and Shulk will enjoy a slightly increased attack range. Shulk can activate one Monado Art, once he does his Talent Gauge will decrease and he loses the attack range bonus.

Standard A attacks and crouch attacks will fill the Talent Gauge by 5% each.
Tilts and aerials will fill the Talent Gauge by 8% each.
Smash attacks will fill the Talent Gauge by 10% each. Hits must all be successful.

Shulk also has the unique mechanic of buffing himself and debuffing his foe through various attacks which could ultimately change the fate of the enemy.

NORMAL SPECIALS

B: Battle Soul. This is a chargeable move that grants Shulk a temporary damage buff based and fills his Talent Gauge based on how long he has charged. Shulk will also take damage depending on how long he charges Battle Soul. Shulk must also activate Battle Soul in order to access his Monado Arts but does not take any damage or receive the 1.2x damage multiplier.

1 sec. x1.2 damage multiplier on all attacks for up to 4 seconds. Fills Talent Gauge by 10%. Shulk takes 2% damage.
2 sec. x1.2 damage multiplier on all attacks for up to 8 seconds. Fills Talent Gauge by 20%. Shulk takes 4% damage.
3 sec. x1.2 damage multiplier on all attacks for up to 12 seconds. Fills Talent Gauge by 30%. Shulk takes 6% damage.
4 sec. x1.2 damage multiplier on all attacks for up to 16 seconds. Fills Talent Gauge by 40%. Shulk takes 8% damage.
5 sec. x1.2 damage multiplier on all attacks for up to 20 seconds. Fills Talent Gauge by 50%. Shulk takes 10% damage.

B>: Slit Edge. Shulk stabs the enemy from the side and decreases their defense by 10% temporarily (The enemy will take 1.1x increased damage from all sources).

B^: Air Slash. Shulk leaps into the air and slashes at the enemy. If the enemy is hit by the sweet spot the enemy will have their movement speed reduced by 15% temporarily.

Bv: Shadow Eye/ Backslash. Shulk vanishes momentarily, appears behind the enemy, and follows up with Backslash.

MONADO ARTS:
All Monado arts deal 1% more damage to R.O.B. because he is a filthy, no-good Mechon in disguise.

B: Monado Enchant. Shulk and his allies (Includes teammates, Assist Trophies, and PokeBalls) enjoy a 1.4x damage multiplier for 20 seconds. Drains the Talent Gauge by 50%. Shulk's attack range will also increase for this duration.

B>: Monado Purge. Shulk launches an ether blast in a direction at a target enemy. If it hits an enemy he/she/it receives an art-seal debuff for a short period of time (Opponent cannot use Specials). The damage of the attack will increase depending on how far it travels. Drains 75% of the Talent Gauge.

B^: Monado Cyclone. Shulk spins around while lifting himself up dealing damage to everyone around him in a large radius. The recovery of this attack is greater and more controllable than Air Slash. Drains the Talent Gauge by 100%.

Bv: Monado Eater. Shulk thrusts the Monado at an enemy dealing damage to said enemy and all nearby foes. This attack will also inflict the opponent with a bleed debuff which deals 1% damage for up to 20 seconds. 75% of the Talent Gauge will be drained.

FINAL SMASH: (Spoilers for those who have yet to finish the game)

True Monado.

This is a fullscreen, omni-directional attack in which Shulk raises his true Monado in the air. A cutscene will follow in which the Smash World is engulfed in a brilliant light signalling its destruction and recreation. All enemies take damage and are sent flying.

The Monado will probably be adjusted to work in the game. It may be about what other swords are.

I figure his arts will be normal attacks while his special moves are Monado moves. His standard attacks would be more unique. He's be decently fast with a normal jump. He'd be lighter than other characters, about 95 or so. His attacks would be normal speed with decent power and focus on his specialty attacks.

Examples: Back Slash could do more damage when it hits a foe's back where stream edge is an AoE attack. His special moves would be standard fair but still strong. Monado Buster could be a slow start up/strong attack. Sheild could reflect projectiles and defend against special moves. His final smash has to be seeing the future.

When you think about it. Shulk was really made for Smash.

I think most of Nintendo's characters are made for Smash. Seeing the unlockable messages thread made me think of this..

What do you guys think will be Shulk's newcomer message if he is an unlockable character?

One characteristic I think would work is the characteristic of being a character that has a strong niche in team battles by providing support for teammates. A mix of offensive and support in a sense, somewhat like how Shulk functions in Xenoblade.

One characteristic I think would work is the characteristic of being a character that has a strong niche in team battles by providing support for teammates. A mix of offensive and support in a sense, somewhat like how Shulk functions in Xenoblade.
It's interesting, but hard to make work. You'd have to balance that or he's too good in team games which, by doing so, you nerf him in regular free for alls. Interesting. Yes. Practical. Depends.

Shulk is not going to simply sneak onto the roster in that way, a character should be included under their own merits.

...and that is exactly why I have decided to ask...

Sign me up to the support list. If there is one. I didn't see one when I skimmed through the OP.

Ehhh. Never really did one. I'm going to be gone for two weeks so I wont be able to do it for some time. Feel free to gather them and I'll add it to the OP.

I'll support. It's on my game list for the Wii (Twilight Princess, Return to Dream Land, Sonic Colors) and he seems like a really cool character with a huge sword (kind of like Cloud :troll:) that can fit into Smash. I love characters who aren't cartoony added to the roster and have a mythical sense to them (Legend of Zelda, Fire Emblem, Kid Icarus, Golden Sun, you get it) and Shulk looks like a perfect match.

I don't know why, but for some reason I always thought that there would either be Shulk, Saki Amamiya, Isaac or Isa Jo. Only one of them would make it in. Don't know what inspired that though.

A lot of people tend to believe that only Isaac or Shulk may get into smash, but it is perfectly plausible to think otherwise. Afterall, the two of them are nothing alike. Plus, they seem like two of the better characters to put into Smash, though that is my opinion of course. Shulk does have a sort of mythical sense to him as well as a charming personality and overall likable character.

All four games you mentioned are some of the Wii's best. Enjoy
