All I see at this point is a bunch of kids who are a little too obsessed with this game wondering why they can barely get 30 people to show up between two states, then when someone who is NOT already part of their regular group comes in and tells them what would make new people join, they cry foul, call the person a noob, the new guy leaves, and the cycle repeats.

Honestly. You guys suck. Smash Bros, and video games in general were better before we had little cesspool communities like this one, where a group of impersonal hardcore dorks can collaborate to suck as much fun out of the game as possible in the name of "competitiveness".

The truth is, there are tons of skilled players out there right under your noses. Little groups of three or four friends who play the game for fun with their own house rules. They're the majority of people playing this game, but you'll never find them. They avoid players like you guys like the plague, and for good reason.

Now call me a noob and go back to playing with yourselves.

Let's get something straight here.
A majority of smashers are over 17. That alone is small proof that you barely know anything about this community.
It is really ****ing stupid how you say that we are obsessed with this game like it's a bad thing. People go to tournaments and smashfests to play the game that this community loves to play, to meet new people & make friends, and to grow together.

I already ****ing said that I am a new comer to the tournament scene and people treat me well. Why? Because I'm not a ****ing scrub like you who complains about the stupidest bull****. You are a "noob", because your mindset is terrible..

Coney already addressed this issue. If you have a mother ****ing problem with the community, get the **** out. No one likes you because the only thing you do is bash the smash community. This entire paragraph is biased and stupid. How can you say that we are sucking fun, when this community has been alive for over 8 years.

We would be glad to play with ourselves where we don't have to listen to scrubs. Stop ****ing wasting your precious time posting here, because all your doing is getting people to hate you.

Then don't enter, or only go to smashfests. Don't get me wrong, I'd love it if we could get locals sponsored or something and make it free entry. We just can't do that right now and winners deserve to get paid for all the work they put into getting good IMO
That's exactly what I was doing, until I recently kind of stopped playing in general (although I kind of want to start playing again). I never said anything about free entries, I was talking about $5 entries. If people won't go to a tourney because the entry is only $5 it says something about why they play the game in general.

Like I was saying, high entries are only an incentive to play for a small number of people. For the greater majority of the community they are just a nuisance that most people just put up with because they don't really have much a choice (unless they don't want to enter at all).

Also, don't forget that the "Then don't enter" mentality is completely counter productive in this type of thread. The idea of this thread is to share ideas and reach compromises, not to try and shut down opposing ideas with generic responses that could be used against any opposing idea.

12/12/10-50ish people.
11/27/10-50ish

In the last two tourneys we had over 50 people...

Sleek, you really should do your research if you're gonna complain about tourneys not getting attendance.

Also, me and Coney have advertised smashfests EVERY Thursday from the start of the semester at Umbc till around the beginning of December (Can't now cause of finals:bee:).
http://www.smashboards.com/showthread.php?t=289888 -The link to thread.

I myself offer rides all the time to help people get place to place. The fact of the matter is, when I go to tourneys new people just play other new people. I would gladly play them, but they usually just play each other. I just sit down at a Wii and play whomever. I would prefer to verse some top tiers for practice, but if someone wants to play me with say Mario, then sure, I'd gladly play them.

this is coney from sassy's

sleek, what you fail to realize is that myself, sassy, takeover, we all CAME from those communities. we were playing in small groups and then we decided we wanted to take it to the next level, and we did, and we didn't ***** and moan about it like you and whoever else you're describing. we sucked it up, got better, and, most importantly, didn't expect the world to bend around us. you're just stuck up your own *** about putting your nose in a community you obviously don't have any stake in and telling us what we're doing wrong. our goal is to encourage current players to keep coming, not to conform to your calvinball idea of what is "competitive"

nobody's telling you how to play the game. if you don't like it the way it's played competitively, that's fine, nobody's twisting your arm. our point isn't to bring in people like you that don't like the game competitively, it's to bring in people that DO like the game competitively that see issue with the way things are done around here. the reason everyone is treating you specifically like a joke isn't because we're some elitist underground conspiracy group of big ol' meanies, it's just that you're a ****head. tbh i wasn't sure you were a real person at first until some people let me in, because you seem far too oblivious to be an actual thinking, blinking, reasoning human being.

Actually, I agreed with your points. I'd also like to add that we need more SMASHFESTS and not just tourneys. Sorry, I'm totally over paying $10 to sit there and have to timeout some cheap spammy Samus player on Rainbow Cruise. I just want to play for fun.
You do realize that was low tiers that you timed my Samus out in right? Idk, why you're taking a low tiers game so seriously, not to mention that you didn't have to try and time me out if it was going to take the fun out of the game for you. You spent $10 that tourney to get spammed out by my Falco, but if you're going to whine about that you really should pick a more viable character.

It just kind of rubs me the wrong way when you complain about me being cheap and spammy in a match up that's easy for Mario, and that you would really whine about anything in low tiers.

All that aside, I agree that more smashfests would be nice.

Man... Im glad my "non tournament" friends know that fighting game tournaments are just not for everyone. And I'm glad I've met other people who understood why they play certain games and where they should play.

That being said

1)increasing attendance works both ways. By that I mean newcomers should have a good attitude and be accepting of what's going on and regulars should be accepting of where the new guy came from.

2)New people are usually neighborhood champs, not use to getting terrible beatdowns consistantly, and don't know how to react when it happens. It is not your job to console them to make them feel better, start sand bagging, or give lots of tips. If your a jerk thats self explanatory, but if you're too nice you may sound cocky, smug, or patronizing. So what do you do? I think the exact answer lies too much in individual personality, but asking them what they think about the competition so far is a good start.

We get 50+ on the regular. Also, your interpretation should be more like, "new guy comes in and whines and says why things should run a different way then things have been running for almost a decade". You're not special, dude. And we're not catering to you either.

Honestly. You guys suck. Smash Bros, and video games in general were better before we had little cesspool communities like this one, where a group of impersonal hardcore dorks can collaborate to suck as much fun out of the game as possible in the name of "competitiveness".
This is the source: You're salty. We didn't ask for your opinion and even if we did it wouldn't amount to anything. Your concept of the community is coming from a person who is outside of the community. Stop being mad because we didn't throw a "Welcome to the Brawl Community" party for you with cupcakes and candy at your feet.

The truth is, there are tons of skilled players out there right under your noses. Little groups of three or four friends who play the game for fun with their own house rules. I doubt they're skilled.

And they avoid us because they're either:

1.) Too young
2.) Can't drive
3.) Don't like a competitive scene
4.) Want their items kept on

Now call me a noob and go back to playing with yourselves.
You're not a noob. That would be an insult to noobs. You're a scrub, dude. You have this scrubby mentality about the community about how things should work. Just get with reality, dude. It's been this way for a long, long time and we've been doing fine. Get rid of your little pompous "you guys are doing et wrong" attitude because if you really wanted to deliver a message that ain't the way to go about it.

Sleek, we would've been more keen to listen to your ideas if your way of bringing them up wasn't so rude. We have multiple smash fests a week where people can get better. Not everyone in the community is the same so just because a few people upset you doesn't mean you should start generalizing like the whole community attacked you. Generalizing makes the whole community not like you because you're grouping us in with things we didn't say but still bad mouthing us even though we didn't do anything.

Forget what Slik media says, he's just a hater, baby.

I think hosting smashfest for Friday and Saturday when no tourneys are being hosted. This'll improve attendance and we can do mini tourneys to give some newer people a feel for the scene. We can save for the better tourneys like Tants or Xanadus other weekends.

Like Omni said, can't drive.

That's really the only thing keeping me from getting into it more, which is why if you see me at tournaments, you'll see me with the same friends(who also can't drive, but can get us a ride) I do want to get good at this game, but alas...

Unfortunately, that's the biggest problem with attendance. People without rides can hurt attendance and the community, as well.

Sleek is probably one of the best people on these boards at completely and utterly annoying the crap out of whoever he wants to. It's just a skill he has. Thing is, IF HE WERE to embrace the "spirit" of brawl that he disagrees with, I'm betting that he could be one of the better Mario's out there. He already is the best Mario I've personally played against, but he refuses to do a CG if he decides to play a character who has one, and he tries to go for the "spectacular" kill more than the easy one, (i.e. he loves to fludd and then double cape a recovering character instead of just fricking grabbing the edge, and suicides if he kills someone by grabbing an edge by accident) . He practices what he preaches but I understand how his vision of the "spirit" of brawl is much different from the competitive community.

Simple as this, he sees Brawl as many people see baseball, a fun pastime that shouldn't be taken too seriously and that naturally gifted people who "play the game right" should be lauded for doing well at.

The Smashboards community sees baseball as a competitive sport, that should be taken seriously because of how many people have a stake in it. Our community gets that while steroids, (metaknight) might be bad, it is understandable that people who have money on the line will go on steroids even to the detriment of their integrity.

That's how I see it anyways.

If he wants to go for the balls out kill move and not cg then that is his choice. It's part of the competitive scene though to win by any legal means necessary. Cg's and Edgeguarding are all legal.

Simple as this, he sees Brawl as many people see baseball, a fun pastime that shouldn't be taken too seriously and that naturally gifted people who "play the game right" should be lauded for doing well at.
But in competitive Baseball your going to opt to hit baseballs to gain one base. You aren't going to swing willy nilly and super hard because that would be less accurate. He would then get three strikes and be out. His team would be then disappointed for doing something like that. In brawl, you have three stocks, which means the same rules apply. Three stocks and you're out. Use them wisely if you're in the competitive scene.

If you're in a casual environment for baseball than you would play baseball a more casual manner. Try hard and crazy things you wouldn't dare attempt in competitive play, make up your own rules, and even pause games directly while they're going on.

In a casual brawl environment the same rules apply as casual baseball does.

I'm using your analogy.

Metaknight is not steroids. Steroids in this community is Adderall, which some smashers take. I do not condone this or take Adderall because I think that's too far, even if money is at stake.

Metaknight is the best character in this game so it's no surprise that people would use him. Some people just love using him as well. I love using Metaknight because he's fun (He's good too, which also helps for the competitive aspect).

lol was that your most impressive win of all time? If so then that's sad bro. Funny to see you still get a boner off that in 08 and not place in tournies at all since then. I woke up that day due to you kids playing smash, catch me during an actual time where the tourney isn't a joke.

Oh not to mention you lost to a luigi that tournament that same tourney and your placing was garbage lol. Granted hes my cousin and hes good, its still luigi. Not sure why you pretend like the choice of character says something but thats beyond me.
You know what though, its all good, if I ever play you see you again I'll mm you and win, until then I'll just let chu take your money lol.
