I am mostly Asian and have quite a bit of wave in my coarse hair that makes it look really bad when it gets longer than a few inches. I straighten my hair if I want to wear it at this length or longer. Upkeep is a ***** but I enjoy the results. I found a nice product for use with the iron that works as a heat protectant and an anti-humectant pomade, so styling without adding stiffness to the hair is done easily enough and the results repel moisture to prevent recurling.
I dredged up an old (bad) webcam to take these shots, and I had to focus on the top of my head to even make out any details in the hair with the picture output.
I'm trying to go for a style like this, because there's no real picture example I can follow and I think it looks neat:

My hair sucks, too. Getting it to that that level of neatness considering it isn't even that long, takes a substantial amount of time thanks to my mixed genes.
