This situation is bewildering. They gave a statement, but it has been so poorly handled that its hard to believe they are being completely honest with it.
As I said before, I actually do believe that GameStop really is incompetent enough to do one of two things...
  • Accidentally leak a Smash fighter through a promotional video and have it pass QC without anyone noticing.
  • Make a promotional video with phrasing that implies they leaked something and have it pass QC without anyone noticing.

Geno is not in Smash, this was just a mistake
Edit: he is only a spirit not a playable character
Edit: we do not have any insider information
Edit: please stop paying attention to this
Edit: guys please, my job is on the line here
Edit: do YouTube comments have character limits?
Edit: please tell me I'm running out of characters soon
Edit: Geno will be a playable character in Super Smash Brothers Ultimate
Edit: please ignore that last edit
Edit: how do I delete a Youtube video?
Edit: that wasn't Google
Edit: who is "Jon Nintendo" and why is he calling me?

There's this air of panic to everything

--The video went private
--The comment has been pinned and unpinned
--It's been edited multiple times
--The third edit (We only have screenshots of the latest two iterations of their statement) had to outright deny knowing information ahead of time even though we know that's untrue given how often GameStop knows about Directs ahead of time and prepares for them internally with SKUs and maintenance

I think my original theory was correct: The video was filmed at a time when Geno's reveal was impending at an upcoming Nintendo event, but plans changed and everything got shunted back to July, but this video slipped through the cracks because it was just a random off-hand comment of information that would have been old at the time the video would go live anyways

I'm 70/30 on this being an actual leak that managed to get through without anyone thinking too hard on it until now

If people are freaking out this much about ONE of the probable announcements, I don't know how people are going to survive this next Direct...
This is what happens when people are starved for information, they get a little crazy.

Man, I hope you're right, really I do.

Just a reminder to everyone here: nothing is set in stone until it actually happens. Things look good, but there's always a chance it's all just a slip up.

Be excited, but don't stand too close to the edge either.

If this were true, why would they not use footage or screenshots from the hypothetical Geno reveal instead of just showing his spirit? If they were privy to information, it's just as likely they'd have access to a press kit of sorts. It's not like Doug Bowser just calls Jon GameStop and just tells them everything that's going to be in the Direct

I'm just going to pull out this old image from the Banjo-speculating days to represent how I feel here.

Quick and dirty edit but I think it gets the job done
Edit: fixed with a more readable version

Well, here's the thing. It depends on how Nintendo words things. If they say it's a presentation, like some kind of replacement for their E3 show? All bets are off. But if they say it's just a normal direct? Maaaybe reel in expectations a tiny bit. Oh, it's certainly going to be more than your average direct. But I genuinely think they are going to focus heavily on what they need to announce, the games that are coming out THIS YEAR, rather than whats coming out next year. We know stuff has been shuffled, and I heavily doubt we are going to get some far off tease announcement like Prime 4 or BOTW2, or even a year out announcement like Luigi's Mansion 3. Just stuff that's out this year. Given we know absolutely nothing that's still going to be a lot, and the fact it will be the first real direct in 10 months carries some heavy weight, but I think we should still pull back a little. We might not even get Fighter 8, would they really announce them THIS far out if we are still thinking 7 is out in September? It's a possibility, but keep expectations in check atleast a little bit.

Well, if you think about it, Hero was released about a month and a half after their announcement and Banjo roughly two and a half. A month and a half from Monday puts us in early September so it's honestly par the course.

This has got to be the dumbest way to handle a leak, fake or otherwise, so far. Reggie, get your people in order, dude!

I remember three or four months before Hero's reveal they revealed the DQ11 port. The moment I heard "Dragon Quest is an RPG that defined the genre", I knew **** was acting up when they had set so much time aside just for it in that direct lol. Though, people were still assuming it was Erdrick at the time.

I also want to say that there’s a very good chance of this Direct not actually being general. We still have that report of “third-parties getting ready for September”, and the idea that a Mario-focused Direct was supposed to happen at one point.

Something like a “Mario 35th Anniversary Direct” or a Mini that only focuses on first-parties is entirely possible.

I'm all in favor for a Mario-focused Direct on the 20th that announces SMRPG coming to NSO and ends with Geno's reveal.

Last night when I logged off this was at page 2976, and now suddenly we're 10 pages away from hitting 3000!

Bring on the 20th! (hopefully, maybe, please.)

Ehhhh, people seem pretty firm it's a normal direct. Enough buzz is there that I feel it's not a mini and I don't think there's enough Mario specific stuff still happenning this year for it to be a Mario-only direct. Not to mention the whole "jesus Nintendo you literally have no games announced after tommorrow, DO SOMETHING" thing.

That's fair but again, this also isn't E3, will Nintendo REALLY feel the need to go all out on this with Smash? If they still have a direct planned for around September-November-ish, which why wouldn't they, couldn't they just wait until then to reveal 8?

Well it's nice to see GameStop give us one last confusing moment before they die at the hands of our eShop overlord.

We have more Mario things happening and rumored than you’d expect.

-The collection
-3D World Deluxe, which is supposed to have a significant amount of added content
-Mario Kart 9
-Mario Lego
-Mario Movie
-Super Nintendo World, which is largely Mario-focused and probably needs some kind of update after the virus happened
-Showing off those Mario board games that were just announced, and the Mario 35th apparel line
-SMRPG on NSO
-Geno in Smash

We have easily more than enough to fill a dedicated Direct.

What if a Paper Mario launch announcement hits Nintendo's Twitter before they can possibly announce a Direct?
It'll probably happen, but so what if it does? They're gonna want to promote the game they have coming out that day, don't see how that'd affect anything about a direct.

The thing I find interesting is, why repeatedly edit the comment on that video? I think this could be a major sign that this COULD be damage control and they are trying everything in their power to fix what has already been thrown out their.

I'm still gonna take GameStop's word on this just to be on the safe side, but as of right now, I have no idea where I stand with this leak. Hopefully we will find our answer on Monday! [Hopefully]
