Just like zero said in a recent video, the Smash community is going through dark times. Byleth was hated by most of the people who watched the stream, probably the fighter pass 2 hasn't sold as well as 1 at the time because of this. I love Arms and everything, but it's not something as impressive as Joker from Persona 5 (Also, the trailer was shadowdropped and obviusly the people were spoiled) it has been almost 6 months since the last reveal, EVO and other tournaments have withdrawn Smash from their lineup (Online) etc.
Personally, I used to play smash like a lot, but in front of a screen, with friends in a coach, or at university in tabletop mode, due to the quarantine and the lousy Online I no longer play as much as before, I don't know if it happens to the rest.
If we have to wait until September to know who # 7 is, I don't know what will happen to the Smash community.
The community is in no danger at all. EVO made the right choice of not hosting Smash because even fans will not defend the terrible online infrastructure. There wasn't a big controversy around it because most people knew it would happen already.
Byleth was one of the worst possible reveals to end on in general, especially as a part of Season 1; and I say that as someone who loves FE and playing Byleth in Smash (probably my no. 3 after Joker and Hero).
- Enormously long waiting time between the reveal of Terry to Byleth. Not to mention he didn't show up
where we expected a Smash reveal to show up. Terry presentation, nope. Game Awards which Nintendo hyped up, nope. And then they announce a surprise presentation in the middle of January, featuring the new unknown DLC character.
- Lack of leaks surrounding them. Usually I dislike leaks, but they do help prepare you for that character. I don't think Terry would have been
as well received, if SNK didn't get leaked ahead of time. If Byleth had leaked well ahead of time, the soreness would've been reduced (but it would still be there). Instead Nintendo pretty much put them in a security vault to make it a surprise.
- Another "advertisement" for FE. It's no coincidence that after the Byleth reveal we also ended up getting more FE:TH DLC information, not to mention his reveal aligned with the release of FE Mirage Sessions. This isn't the first time, as Corrin in Smash 4 did the exact same thing (which coincidentally kickstarted the annoying "generic anime swordsman meme")
- Passing over other just as, if not more deserving franchises. For example, Rex and Pyra + ARMS were too late to get into Smash 4 base. But not late enough to be an advertising rep like FE:TH. The original release of Three Houses was planned to be 2018, and if we did get it around that time; there's a good shot Byleth wouldn't have been chosen. Again, Byleth got in just because he hit that sweetspot for timing. A potential Elma was passed over in favor Corrin in Smash 4, and it happened again here because FE just fit that spot a little better.
- Lack of another reveal. We didn't get any reveal to provide a cushion for Byleth's reception. Corrin at the very least had Bayonetta. All the hate was centered solely on Byleth in comparison.
I think if Byleth was a part of season 2 then the salt would've been reduced because a potential FE:TH rep would've been more "expected" (but obviously there would still be a lot of raging). That said, I am thankful for Terry/Byleth/ARMS in the way that speculation doesn't revolve around HUGE characters/series anymore. Literally any series/character with a legacy is valid as long as they originated in a video game. Except Saber/FATE (but who even knows at this point).
I always found funny that there are people believing that Spirits deconfirm. They are a miserable little pile of .PNG archives.
I imagine Businessmen, heads of the industry, dressed formally at a meeting, discussing which characters could be in one of the biggest advertising games in the industry, but one saying "We can't add that character, it's a spirit
"
Yeah, people who cling to the Spirit/AT deconfirm rule right now are being unreasonable. PNG's and Items are not going to stop a certain character from being added. Heck, the fact that Nintendo even considered Springman/Min-Min/Ninjara/Twintelle/Ribbon-Girl as "on the table" back in the ARMS presentation should have killed the rule. Can I confirm that we'll get promotions? No. But Spirits/ATs are not really a "hurdle" in this age of DLC.
