Listen I’ve had this idea in my head all day and I’ve been dying to talk about it (I feel like Charlie from Always Sunny in Philadelphia with the Pepe Silvia thing).

Personal speculation, I think Geno is going to be a fighter after the pass, but he was REAL close to being deconfirmed. If what insiders are saying is true and post pass DLC was decided around E3, they probably removed his costume from returning alongside Hero’s array of mii costumes like, last minute.

Joker had six costumes (biggest number so far)
Hero had four costumes
Banjo and Kazooie had five costumes
Terry had five costumes

Hero is the obvious outlier. It seems like they could’ve and were probably expecting to add Geno’s costume in there so that wave 2 would line up with the waves proceeding it.

Does this actually mean anything? I dunno! But it has been bugging me all day and I wanted some outside opinions on it.

You know, how do you guys think the perception of SMRPG will change after a Geno? Smash has an effect on stuff like that, and from my personal experiences, SMRPG doesn't seem as noted as the Mario RPGs that followed it.

Oh you think that's cursed? I have one of him doing the default Fortnite dance on my computer at home.
3D Mr Game and Watch in general is beyond cursed, I'm pretty sure I'd be left broken nd weeping by that aha...
Side note about your signature, who's the fifth wanted in the honey pot? I know Geno, Doomguy and Phoenix Wright, and I think 4 is the Heavy, but is #5 lit Hatsune Miku or something?

I truly believe that when Geno is shown, it would pique a lot of people's curiosity. Especially if Sakurai goes into detail about the game, which makes me think he will.

With that in mind, I think it would strengthen the ties between Nintendo and Square. Perhaps, even go as far as to revive the Mario RPG genre.

This pretty much, Square might not be in the best shape if all the final fantasy news of the last several years says anything but It's possible if this really takes off we could be entering the next era for mario RPG's now that paper mario and M+L are more or less dead.

Oh, most certainly. I do wonder how much detail he will go into compared to the other presentations though, as this is a case where he would mainly talk about one game and a few minor cameos.

With both Paper Mario and M&L unfortunately going under, having Square make the Mario RPGs as originally assumed would be a great idea.

Considering Smash has the video game equivalent of the Midas Touch (See Earthbound, F-ZERO, Fire Emblem, Kid Icarus, Fire Emblem again, Persona to Nintendo diehards, Dragon Quest to not-Japan, Banjo-Kazooie to the modern era, even Terry is being noticed for his contributions to gaming a lot more) Geno would most likely become a lot more well-known amongst the casual fanbase, and Mario RPG would likely be even more fondly remembered than before.

I mean if the suits at nintendo have any brain cells they'll couple his reveal with SMRPG for snes online. I think a large part of his perception to the casual smash audience could be exposed though such an easy opportunity for them.

The worst part about loosing alphadream to me is that we're never going to get the M+L spinoff W+Γ the rest of the world never knew it wanted.

Alright, last time I'm doing this because it seems to be some sort of communication error between us. I'm not being subjective nor do I think Joker was a bad first choice. What I said is the reasons you claim Llyod doesn't work are exactly all he had, minus the surprise generated by the fans own rules, and yet Nintendo still felt he could be in position 1 a position people felt was special, and a western event despite Japan being a place where RPGs do better are more accepted and don't have fools crying for no more anime, or swordfighters, or combination thereof and yet he was still shown off in the West. I think if Joker had all that ad that didn't factor into showing him off there, then a character who would also similarly be better in Japan could easily be shown once again at the VGAs. They clearly aren't choosing reveal locations based on region. If Joker is really tripping you for some reason still then once again remember that showed off Hero at E3. The Western game event. That was my point. Being a niche character in the region doesn't stop the reveal being primarily in the region. What matters more is likely they are just large events with a high videogame focus where it can reach multiple people who otherwise may not have seen it. So while Llyod might be more familiar to the Japanese market since Tales is a bigger part of their culture, I don't doubt that they'd shown him at the next VGAs.
It's really not. While I am happy to see how strong Llyod is growing currently it's mainly due the lack of other forerunners. Even if you stick to the current period of DLC speculation it has been hard to gear the conversation to Llyod as people pretty much focused on Hero, then Banjo vs Steve, then it was Crash and Ryu. It took all that to be over before more people started mentioning Llyod and then it took the Miis to not come back to reach the heights of discussion he's now reaching. If there are a sizable number of Llyod fans in here skewing your perspective then that might explain why you think he's a more common want than he is but he's never been the strongest in terms of fan demand. Once again I state his popularity has been middling at best.
Yeah, I think that there’s just some subjective differences here that can’t be passed: You seem sure that Joker was specifically a reveal aimed towards Japanese fans or at least would have fared better with them, and I think you’re also saying that on a level playing field without the shock value, Joker and Lloyd would be equally as well-received(though that might just be a misinterpretation on my end). I vehemently disagree on all those points, but arguing them would veer us farther into contemporary popularity vs. lasting franchises and the Smash fanbase vs. the general populace, which is a whole separate thing that it’s really best not to get into.

Also, throughout the entire first half of the year, Lloyd was practically considered a lock by most people parading around the initial “Mii Costume Theory” that popped up, where the pass would have been Sega/Square/Capcom/Namco/Microsoft. That theory got quite popular, and it was when I heard about him the most. While there certainly were still people just adding him to their list because they were going along with the theory, quite a good amount of fans came out of the woodwork as well.

Anyway, moving back on-topic now that all that’s over...

It’s absolutely going to be added to SNES Online, like others have said. However, I’d specifically advise that when it does, that everyone here not only plays it, but goes through and beats it, even if you’ve already done so before. I have no doubt in my mind that they track that kind of thing, and aside from buying the Geno character itself and any costumes it’d come with, that would be by far the best contemporary way of showing that you want more of SMRPG itself.

New video was uploaded to the Smash Youtube channel and only reveal trailers for Ultimate and Smash 4, Highlight reels from pre-launch Ultimate and both the initial launch trailer and WoL trailer are uploaded there what I'm trying to say is they're getting ready to upload or have already uploaded the #5 reveal trailer.

It could be shown in a week to two weeks or could be saved for the Video Game Awards whatever the case may be it's certainly interesting.

That's it? Is that really it? Why did we stop talking about this leak then?
Because we talked it to death? Literally 100 pages in like three days, all tied to the speculation of that particular leak. No one can prove that it's real, the only insider who has talked about it has said it has nothing to do with Fighter #5, and no one has come forward to claim it. Someone was able to get a jiggleboned Mallow hat into the game, but commented on the difficulty of it and still didn't get the texture as good as we see in the leak, but the point stands that it is possible to fake. If fake, the faker has had at least since early August to work on it.

Aside from being talked to its limits, I think the insider saying it's fake based on who they know #5 is has just been a good enough answer for a lot of us. Personally, I'm leaning towards it being more fake than real just because we've had modders come out of the woodwork in a week's time and get similar footage, when literally last Monday you had modders saying it couldn't be done. The insider doesn't help the case that much, because it either means they don't know anyone beyond Fighter 5, or they do know and they don't want to talk about who it is, or they know that Geno and/or Doom Guy are nowhere near immediately after the pass. I prefer the first possibility, of course, and I believe it's very realistic.

Just as an aside, a long while back I thought it sure would be funny if the first post made here after Geno got announced was 77,777, but that was back when we were in the low 50,000s, so I thought "no way will we make it there before he gets announced"... but suddenly it's looking pretty good. Here's to hoping my goofy hunch was right and 77,777 is "we did it" or some variation thereof.

You know if Fatman was right about #5 being a really milktoast pick then a robin style shadowdrop doesn't seem too terribly unreasonable if they didn't have any plans to use the VGA again.

Pretty sure the blue dot just means that something on the channel has been updated, not necessarily that a video was uploaded. I could be mistaken though.

Given that that Mii Costume leak has been out over a week now I'm leaning a bit more towards real.
If someone was just using it as a means of showing off their modding/modeling skills, they probably would've come out by now.
But it's still no guarantee.

I'll give one thing to the Grinch leak - it gave me a look at one of my most favorite pieces of fan-art in my life, wherein the Grinch stuffed a bunch of the supposed Leak characters into a burlap sack while gloating in rhyme. Ten outta ten.

Thinking on the idea that DLC Fighter #5 might be yet another "thank you" character, and that as some have speculated, might be a "thanks" to Bandai Namco for having helped with Smash Bros. 3DS/Wii U, and now Ultimate; rather than it being Heihachi, or Lloyd (because both their Mii Costumes are still missing and represent two of Bandai Namco's biggest franchises), I'm thinking of another name. A while back, some outlets (IGN, polygon, gematsu) reported that Bandai Namco had trademarked some of their old IPs with the word Encore; and among those IPs is Klonoa. What if the 5th fighter, as thanks to Bandai Namco, Sakurai were to add Klonoa; at the same time helping Bamco to promote (early) the potentially upcoming Klonoa Encore game (which might be a remake of Door to Phantomile)?

Just my humble opinion. Right now tho, I trust in Sakurai; always have. 5th DLC is going to be great. :) (By great I mean meaningful, and not in an over-hyping sense).

Oh, on the subject of characters that could be fun to play as (as in, bring something new to Smash), I'd be down for either Arle, or Bub and Bob (Bubble Bobble).

So with that new video listing we might be getting a November Direct. If so then please for the love of god put Devil May Cry 3 on the eShop already.

Can anyone list instances where that blue dot has meant something was imminent?

if not, I will continue to expect the reveal is at the VGAs

A reveal in a direct does not necessarily preclude a second reveal at the VGAs. Especially a character that might not be as "exciting", could suggest something much more suited to the venue coming at the VGAs.
