Random thought: I wonder what it would feel like to be Sakurai right now. He's cleaned out the Japan gaming awards and has become one of the most renowned developers in the world. MILLIONS of people bend to his every word, dissecting every syllable in hopes of their favorite characters getting into Smash and reaching legendary status. He commands a multi-billion dollar franchise with the gaming world sitting right in his palm, begging him to represent their franchises. His every whim creates tidal waves of joy and exasperation. I gotta say, for 49 years old, that guy's pretty much arrived. I can definitely see why he'd probably want to retire at the pinnacle of his success. Pump this game into the history books and then smile on a grateful universe.

He seems like a really compassionate, "everyone should have fun" guy, so if I had to guess I'd say he doesn't like how some of that played out.

Just want to leave this here. Some good info to be found here! Namely being that Sakurai could've even made Slime work if need be (which I personally don't find surprising due to Piranha Plant, but there are always Sakurai doubters), and that the Dragon Quest V hero was at one point considered for an alternate costume.

The other news I want to draw attention to is that NINTENDO chose to add a Dragon Quest character. They brought that to Sakurai. Which to people who know things Sakurai has repeated multiple times, isn't surprising. Sakurai has said that Nintendo comes to him for the DLC. But I have seen some people (some in this thread) who seem so certain it was Sakurai who hand-picked Hero. Even though Sakurai has said Nintendo approached him, and I really don't think Sakurai would lie.

The biggest news, at least for Geno fans, is what Sakurai was saying about negotiating with Square Enix: "...the agreement came surprisingly quickly." If a series that is as complicated as Dragon Quest's copyright (Sakurai even admitted he knew there would be hurdles), and that Square Enix was lenient on things with their characters that they usually aren't... yeah, I think this spells well for Geno (maybe even Sora).

What do you all think?
I think our chances have gotten stronger yet again. It seems more and more likely Geno won't be simply a Mii Fighter costume again.

I realized I could probably take inspiration with animations from the Mario and Luigi series, since it's probably the series where Mario is the most animated. And I already did to improve this

To be fair, I'm sure he knows that you can't please everyone all the time. You just can't. Things don't always go as planned and there's always SOMEONE that won't be satisfied. Still, his successes speak for themselves.

I know Square is easier to work with as we thought, but how exactly did it increases chances not becoming a costume?

There's a big difference in knowing you can't please everyone and being ok with it, I think.

Because it removes the stigma that they're some kind of greed driven monster corporation that would demand 100% of DLC proceeds plus tip for Geno to be in the game with little to no reward to Nintendo aside from pleasing fans who already bought the game. I'm being hyperbolic here but that's really what it sums up to - people think that neither Square nor Nintendo have anything to gain from his inclusion as anything more complex than a costume.

It doesn't outright say "if he comes back he's a full fighter" anymore than it guarantees Chocobo to be a fighter.

I think that Sheva will 100 percent never happen before Jill/Chris/Leon or even Wesker
Well yeah, obviously. That wasn't the point though lol. Likelihood or possibility had no place in that list. I was just sharing favorites in an attempt to see the types of characters everyone would want without the worry of being realistic. Learn more about everyone. Just for fun :)

Fair enough. He IS a perfectionist after all. Still, I've learned from personal experience that no matter how authentically nice, generous, kind or thoughtful you are, there will always be SOMEONE that hates your ever-loving guts. It's best to just accept that some people are simply miserable creatures and there's no point in tormenting yourself over it. Just find joy in your accomplishments and be the best you can be. Nobody can ask for more than that.

Yeah I get that that's always interesting. I honestly don't know some of those characters, but I would love a RE rep although my preference is Wesker (who I think has no chance to make it in either) simply because he'd have a more interesting and varied moveset in my opinion, also I'm all for more FF reps and would love Dig Dug, Spyro, and Isaac. I know who Shantae is and hopefully without inciting a riot I'll simply say I don't personally want her in Smash but I'm not going to try to gatekeep her or anything or put any fans down or anything like that because if she gets in it'll make a lot of fans happy and that's a good thing that should be encouraged so please by all means support your own preferences because that's exactly what I'm going to do.

In this same vein, if you had to choose more obscure or generic characters that aren't often speculated for Smash, who would you all want?

Completely unrelated to Smash discussion but since this seems the prime place to reach out to fellow fans of SMRPG; was just rummaging through Fangamer and as a part of a sale they're having includes some buttons (or magnets if you choose) of some Super Mario RPG characters, including Geno. What's even funnier is just like the shell game you can get when you win a battle, there's a wild card button where you either WIN (Yoshi) DRAW (chick) or LOSE (Fuzzy). Whoever made these clearly loves the game.

Fangamer might actually be a point of interest as far as speculation goes. They made a big push for Rareware and specifically Banjo-Kazooie merch less than a month before he was revealed in the E3 direct and have already released a replica of Terry's Fatal Fury hat recently, something that must have been in the works for a while since it involved the original creators at SNK. I forget if if was during the B-K reveal or when they put a bunch of Sans stuff up after the Mii costume, but someone definitely accused them of having foreknowledge that these were going to happen and they responded by putting their hand up to their mouth and going "tee-hee". I wonder if they would ever drop hints if a certain puppet boi was going to be coming...

Other than who's in my list already, for fighters I'd go for:

1. Sparkster from Rocket Knight Adventures
2. Suezo or Tiger from Monster Rancher
3. Zeke and Julie from Zombies Ate My Neighbors

I'd also like to see some assist trophies:

1. A Chocobo stampede
2. The racers from Rock & Roll Racing
3. The musicians from Wacky Worlds

Out there enough for ya? :)

Wasn’t the fatal furry hat out a year ago? I don’t see anything about Fangamer pushing Banjo before he was revealed. I only see Fangamer on Banjo the same day he was revealed.

Yep, quick google-fu shows the Terry hat's been there a while, just recently saw it so I jumped on the conspiracy wagon prematurely. I checked my receipt for the Banjo stuff and sure enough it was the exact same day as the Direct. Was thinking of the Tokaku figure and the Gamestop plushie as a breadcrumb trail, so yes definitely someone saw how close the reveal of the DLC and the merch was and asked Fangamer if they knew ahead of time.

If this is true then I am going to lose my s$$t. That would be insane if this could point to Geno.

Nice those are out there! I do know Sparkster.

For me my most obscure is probably The Dishwasher or Yuri from The Dishwasher: Dead Samurai/Vampire Smile.
From there its more just characters who just don't have much presence in speculation for one reason or another like Isaac Clarke from Dead Space and Wesker from Resident Evil.
As for generic characters, I would love Chozo or Space Pirate from Metroid or Shadow Beasts from LoZ.

Only gonna post once before I go back into my hiatus from the thread.

Thank the gods, Slime may have a chance next time!

That being said, at least the situation regarding character selection is cleared up. Nintendo generally suggests characters first, and Sakurai can and will reject some suggestions for specific reasons. He has balls of Metal Slime to even turn down a request for an Enix character in favor of a less promoted character of theirs.

I love all these ideas!
If only the Switch, Smash Ultimate and Sakurai's drive/passion could last forever.....

I would guess they took advantage of Terry's inclusion to market the hat again, an obviously smart business move. The Banjo stuff, however, is incredibly fascinating to me...

Are these buttons older buttons? I somehow don't remember them ever being on the site. I shop at Fangamer here and there for all kinds of different merch, and I'd think I'd know of any SMRPG-inspired merch. The recent push could easily be because they see people pushing for Geno in Smash, but it does make me wonder if it's something more. After all, did they do any kind of push like this for any fan favorites aside from Banjo (and I think Shantae, but in her case, it's because she's getting a new game)?

I wouldn't treat it as anything more than taking advantage of the climate of Smash speculation... for now. However, it is still a point of intrigue, and it's something more tangible than a lot of the other things we've been lifting a brow over when it comes to Geno. We'll just have to wait and see.

Looks like that the only things holding back DQ content were the music (a given on how Sugiyama is). I just wonder what in the hell happened to FF content in Smash Bros, it should have so much more.

And yes, I think this does bode well for Geno. If he doesn't get in then he's like the unluckiest character outside of Dixie Kong in Smash history.

That dubious honor might go to Rex. From the sounds of it he just barely missed his only chance. :drsad:

I would hope the same doesn't befall Geno.

I do think than if we get any Nintendo owned characters for DLC Rex has the best shot and that a lot of people are sleeping on him.

Sorry for lack of posts. I am going to be extremely busy for the next few months.

I am still doing what I can to push for Geno's inclusion for Smash Bros but making posts about it is going to be tough.

Just a reminder, we are collecting letters, art, etc and plan on sending them to Nintendo of America via physical letters. The cut off date for accepting these letters will be September 30th (8pm Eastern) Please check out the link below for how you can get your voice out to want Geno in Smash Bros.

If you send all the stuff to Nintendo of America, would they tell NoJ and Square?

They may or may not, but whatever the case, we're taking this in bite-sized chunks, mostly due to cost and preventing overwhelming the team. After NoA receives everything, I'll be very happy to look into getting these to Square and NoJ, as well.

Im fairly new and I don't post often at all, but Ive been keeping up with a lot of whats been going on, I'm an old school SMRPG player on Snes and have been in support of Geno since melee. I also have done a lot of Geno art in the past. One excuse designers might make in this smash bros is Geno needs to be expressive since that's what Sakurai is going for this time around. Geno may be a Doll but expressions is something he can make as we've seen in the game. I did a few sketches with some rare free time I have to show some doodles of him making a few that I remember from the game. (If the link works, I hope)

Do what you want with it I hope it helps in any kind of way, GO GENO!
