Wasn't there a Mario game where you had to swat flies? I think it was Mario Paint, and I think that's where that Mario came from.

Personally, I think that Shadow Mario from Super Mario Sunshine was more like a secondary version of a Paint Mario or something. But maybe that's just me.

The Super Mario Bros. film, the text "ボブ ホスキソス" is pronounced Bobu Hosusosu, which is pretty close to Mario's actor in that movie: Bob Hoskins. Lou Albino did Mario in the Super Mario Bros. Super Show. RIP Lou.

The leading suggestions for now are Donkey Kong Country, Cave Story, and a Pokemon game. I'm looking more and more to DKC for one of them since Donkey Kong Country Returns looks so legit the nostalgia would be awesome.

As long as Wario is still popular, he doesn't need to hypnotize us. Maybe if we hated him as much as the folks in the Mushroom Kingdom.
