It's fair enough to get what you think from KH and the original Advent Children. It's all we had for quite some time. Though I feel like I'm one of the few people that actually understood Cloud down to a deeper level beyond waving it off as "emo".
The short novellas between VII and Advent Children Complete also help complete the package though. I won't go into too much detail (best of luck for myself on that one ) but, incoming spoilers. If you don't wanna read then give them a read for yourself someday, and ESPECIALLY check out Advent Children Complete. To me, it's the littlest of details that helped solidify Cloud and even a couple of others.
Advent Children Complete doesn't explain anything in VII at all. It's a new chapter, really. Everything in VII made sense, and thanks to Complete and just a little more searching within the characters, so does the movie imo.
You take someone like Cloud who had all this crap thrown at him and more and for him to bounce back with some fairly done emotional struggles inside himself, and I can throw out those "angsty emo" accussations. ...or at least, if it's gonna be said, there's some pretty damn good reasons behind said moments for Cloud until he comes through. Yeah I'm pretty sure we've talked about it before.
That being said, I find it kind of funny that, in a way, Lightning got her three stories, and Cloud has his three tales through Crisis Core (though it focused on Zack it helped set the foundation for the future and a legacy), VII and Advent Children. Cloud's story is over in my opinion. And thanks to Complete, it ended on a high note. ...that's not to say that the story of VII is over since we've seen Dirge of Cerberus and Vincent's role in saving the world, but I digress.
Anyway, done rambling! Going to sleep. Bleck I hate being sick. x.x

Shortly after the end of VII, Cloud and Tifa opted for settling down in the city of Edge and shortly afterwards Cloud started up the delivery business. He was just fine up until a fated delivery reminded him of what he lost. Elmyra had him send flowers to the Forgotten City in remembrance of Aerith. Made him think of Zack and Aerith, and he fell into a brief state of depression over it. But here's the funny thing about that. Cloud bounced back from it because he talked to Tifa about it. Anyway, fastforward a little more and the disease known as Geostigma starts spreading due to Jenova's influence after Meteor fell. Cloud brings the orphaned boy, Denzel, back after discovering him at the old Church in Midgar. With Tifa, Denzel and Marlene all together in Edge building a life together, Cloud was happy. ...well, as happy as he could be knowing that Denzel was sick with Geostigma, so he spent a lot of his time away and busied himself researching the body and trying to find a cure for Denzel. Coming up empty-handed no matter how hard he tried, he eventually got the disease too. And at that point, it was the straw that broke the camel's back, so to speak. He was helpless in the wake of an incurable disease and he let his family and friends down, so he felt. And that brought back some ghosts of his past yet again in Aerith and Zack. That's a pretty damn bleak world to live in and for someone as strong as him to fall, it took the support of his friends and some soul searching to try and find his stride again. And lo and behold? By the end of Advent Children Complete, he's found his fighting spirit and saved the world yet again.
Heck my favorite moment that really helps solidify Cloud's strength as a character in this version is when the team is fighting Bahamut SIN, rather than show up after taking Marlene to safety and immediately skipping to fighting Bahamut, he rides in on Fenrir just in time to see Tifa and Denzel on the verge of imminent death. Seeing the past losses of Zack and Aerith in his mind, he saves them both in seperate spots at the SAME TIME.
That was the moment that I could really say to myself "Cloud's back." instead of him just popping out of nowhere in Edge in the original AC.
