Death Note anime > manga is the only one off the top of my head

I also would disagree with "manga is usually better" because I cannot for the life of me see the spirit of things like Samurai Champloo, FLCL or Gungrave translating as well onto paper.

If most of the time the anime doesn't please, it's probably because they're just going off the manga and don't have the license/courage to implement expansions on style and such

perhaps it would be more accurate to say the first medium it's released on is better. I can side more with that

i actually think death note manga is more superior than anime

i think that if a series starts out as an anime first then adapted as a manga, the anime will be more superior, and vice versa

the only ones i can think of from the top of my head where i liked the anime better than the manga is yyh and fma brotherhood

I'll just say this is right. One cause I didn't account for anime that starts as an anime, and two since this would also include visual novels~ And I never watch/read anime/manga based off a visual novel cause I'd just rather play that.

Light novels though.. I'm gonna try the Spice and Wolf novel and see how that works for me.. (first 5 books are licensed in English)

It isn't so much by virtue of having been first to be released, it is simply the way it is produced. For example, the manga is very close to the creator's intention, the anime sometimes is constrained by having to use filler, end in the middle of the story, or diverge from the original story and thus being not as well planned. The thing is also that what passes in a manga is radically different from what passes in an anime. A lot of the things that anime can be superior with is that things in the FLCL anime had more freedom for half the stuff going on wouldn't work in a manga, and same with fighting scenes, the choreography can be easier to understand and increased dramatically.

^thats probably why I like yyh and fm brotherhood anime better than manga because of the fight scenes (also I didn't really like the art in the manga).

I also liked the anime more because it was much better at conveying character emotion, especially with the soundtrack, and character emotions were key for me in liking the stories.

As for death note I liked the mAnga much more because I could go on my own pace, death note to me was all about bringing suspense and all that. The anime I thought ended their episodes in a way that didn't hype me up a much as in the manga. Plus reading the manga at my own pace let me actually think about what was going on in the plot lolol

I'll agree with action/fighting genres doing better as animes than manga. Reading the Naruto/One Piece manga.. Its hard to tell whats in the background at times... Only reason i read is cause its ahead.

manga doesn't take one hundred billion trillion years to read like anime does to watch

the amount of anime piling up on my to-watch list will probably take me far longer to watch than i have spent reading manga total

I suppose I have no choice but to assume that the creator/author will know and pick the best medium to tell their story through.
It would be better by virtue of being first so long as the creator makes a good artistic/story-telling decision

imo

So has anyone here ever seen The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya? I've just started watching it and it's ****ing hilarious not to mention eerily compelling.

I have some time ago, and it is very very good, except the last episode made me want to beat my head against the wall.

Interested in getting the manga soon though, since it is still on going.

Word. I was kinda like wtf at the first episode cause it seemed like a joke or spoof, but then they reveal what's going on and it's like OH ha. I'm on ep. 4 I think...

I also just recently finished East of Eden, which I found really cool, just wish I could get my hands on more than the 1 season...

a lot of people seem to have the opposite opinion of yours

i thought both halves had their moments

the second movie might be of interest to you, does the second half of the anime in extraordinarily epic fashion - mainly the final battle, which is stretched from 15 or so minutes to 45 minutes and introduces a plethora of epic stuff

From the OP, Death Note seemed the most interesting. Finished watching the series now, what an awesome show it was, though I agree it kinda declined halfway onwards.

Elfen lied is gonna be hard to top.. That's a really good anime. (On a side note, it doesn't say the whole story like the manga though)

The Lied anime was just awful... it didn't have half the things that manga did and even had a terrible ending to boot.

out of curiosity why do alot of people like the first half better?
To be honest the story changes. I made many long drawn out posts in the anime thread about how the anime changes tone in the second half, characters change, and the events that occur in the second half leaves me with a very very bitter taste in my mouth. I think the ending was ****ing terrible.

The contrasts between the two halves I realized while watching, I guess I'm just the type to prefer the atmosphere of the 2nd half

Heh, I don't read manga (or american comics for that matter), but I suppose it'd be like comparing any written work to their screen versions - sometimes it's awesome, sometimes it falls way short. In their defense, the manga was not even done when they started the anime so they kinda had to follow the natural progression of the tv show, but I can understand the manga being "better" in that it was far more detailed, and at the least completed. There are tons of differences I've read about, such as Kouta not being nearly as forgiving once he realizes what's going on, etc. Still, I thought the anime itself as a stand alone piece was excellent. The score track Lilium is beautiful and the animations were really well done. I love the gore aspect, even though it received a lot of criticism (for that and for all the nudity) I didn't think it was necessarily too much or overly pornographic. I didn't think the voice acting was bad, either. (My wife scolds me for only watching/enjoying english-dubbed anime - "Read your anime like a real fan!) I just wish they'd have waited until the manga was further along so that the anime could run properly in tandem. There SO many unanswered questions as it sits... which will never be answered.

Meanwhile I just couldn't get into gunslinger girl, maybe at another time, but it's basically yet another anime I started and quickly lost interest - another is Girls Bravo! o.O strange stuff that one. But kinda boring despite the eye candy.

No, instead I've picked up Black Blood Brothers, and I'm completely enthralled. So now of course I need to delve into other titles since this one is such a short series (why are the good ones always so short!?) There's Hellsing, Trinity Blood, and Blood+ all on my list of to-watch...

Yeah, people need to stop pushing anime adaptions so quickly, it always ends up causing discrepencies between the original piece and it, and almost always that is a BAD thing. Though I do agree the music was good, but I don't remember them ever manifesting the Lied melody at the end of the manga into something you can actually hear in the anime, which is a disappoint. Or did I miss something?

Well actually this is yet another difference between the anime and manga.

Lilium is the opening theme for the anime, where it serves an important role in several episodes. The lyrics are based around the Biblical passages in Psalms and the Epistle of James, and the Renaissance hymn, "Ave Mundi Spes Maria", which are sung in Latin. The opening and full version is performed by Kumiko Noma. Lilium is composed by Yukio and Kondo. In the anime, the song is played by Kouta's music box. There are other versions and arrangements as well. Kayo Konishi arranged the lyrics.

In the anime, Kouta and Lucy first meet together as young children, and he shows her a music box that plays this theme, which she is fascinated by. Years later, when she is using her powers to kill some attacking soldiers, she hums this theme, which is among the things that trigger the return of his memories concerning the trauma she caused him out of a jealousy-enduced misunderstanding. Since Nozomi never appears in the anime, Kaede/Lucy/Nyu never learns the song, -source

The song itself is quite pretty and was rearranged in many different ways to provide for most of the show's soundtrack, such as a version sung by gregorian-styled tenors, an instrumental version in piano, etc. And of course the music box has "Lilium" written on it, which ties in with the opening theme, and throughout, and the box itself served as a focal point in the plot. But as I said, the manga totally differed on a lot of this...

This makes us alike, i like listening to anime in my native language. Lets me understand tone much more better.

people (see: industries) jump at the chance to make money

and people are fine with watching terrible, terrible things they would never read because watching anime is a braindead activity

Reading is definitely more brain intensive, but I hate comics, so reading a manga though there are technically several major differences, is for me equally as uninteresting. Anime on the other hand, is as enjoyable as watching any other presentation on screen. Neither can compare to reading an actual book, obviously, but being lazy in general, I prefer not to read.

So I just finished Blood+ ... I enjoyed it quite a bit, though I'm sad to see it end. There were some who criticized it for being TOO long, but I could have totally gone for a third season. So now it's on to Trinity Blood. I already like it less. The anime style in Blood+ was fairly unique, and after watching so many episodes, I'm finding myself having to un-Blood+ myself in a way to revert back to the more commercial style of Trinity. I'll give it a go for a bit. My wife on the other hand started Gurren Lagann and now I'm feeling torn between just going totally all out with that or trying to watch both.

The Soul Eater chapter that just came up recently is so amazing... The insanity almost just leaks from the pages and into me by just reading it, it's getting so good!

Someone suggested it to me back in ... shoot, 2001? A long time at any rate... I never did get a chance to watch it.

I have recently completed Now and Then, Here and There, Murder Princess, and Rin: Daughters of Mnemosyne. I really liked all three, though I HATED how Mnemosyne ended, the last episode was just trash imho. And the more I think about it, the whole series just kinda... progressed strangely. I think it'd have been far more compelling if it'd been done as 24 min ep's and stretched out to cover more stuff.

Now and Then, Here and There was frankly scary to me. It reminded me a lot of Barefoot Gen, especially in terms of character design. And the whole war thing of course.

Murder Princess though really short actually felt great to me. There wasn't this pang of missing something like I got from Mnemosyne, and yet it didn't feel rushed either despite its length. Just good storytelling, I guess.

And so now with those 3 done I'm about 3 episodes into Ga-Rei: Zero. At first I was kinda like "meh" but now that the back story is being explained I think I'll finish it out.

Anime that I tried and failed with along the past few weeks: Trinity Blood, Gunslinger Girl, and Gurren Lagan (I know! I know, everyone loves it). I have promised myself I will give these another chance, but for now they'll have to wait. After Ga-Rei: Zero I intend to watch Spice and Wolf, and then onto Chobits, Claymore, Ouran High School Host Club, Angel Beats!, and Clanned.

EDIT: OMG! Ga-Rei-Zero was so sad :( But Spice and Wolf seems to be more up beat.

correct analysis
Thank you, finally, a forum not surrounded in THE SAME ones that I can't go one Google search page without finding THEM.

I really liked Lost Universe, the end battle seemed too easy for my taste, and the change in tone was "slowly but surely," (I hate anything that does a 180 abruptly)
funny and still emotional.

So, can anyone recommend me an anime that does not have large globs of blood and little to no mature humor? (not really into the same predictable punchlines)
I like stories that focus on parent characters, goofy faces, magical girl (can't figure out why), psychological/philosophical, complex but not Gundam complicated (semi-simplistic as well), Bobobo style humor (don't shoot me), mythology and history.

Note: I will watch from any decade from the 60s-present.
