Yeah X, they're talking about the Perth national, not GenCon.

GenCon is a once a year gaming event that rivals SupaNova in size that happens at Brisbane's Convention center.

So...

Jan - Adelaide
Jul - Perth
Sep - Brisbane
Oct/Nov/Dec - Melbourne

I didn't include X and Jei's big crew tourney as they are offering something more specialist and Victoria based. This leaves Sydney with only 1 viable gap - Q2, if they decide to take it.

Avcon this year had a 256 Brawl signup for an attendance of less than 4000... all scrubs in one big scrub loving no rules tournament.
Gencon had over 10,000 people attended Gencon in it's first year.
That's a lot of scrubs to babysit. :s

CW is in a similar position with eGames in Vic this year, and we are just going to tread it lightly with some more casual competition and promote our scene, see how it goes.

Yeah that's what I did this year at GenCon, but there was huge stuff ups on GenCon's part so it didn't go as well as planned.

Which is precisely why I'm planning now and not later :)

Pinnacles and wave rock are a lot worse then you think there gonna be. When you get to wave rock its kinda cool then you're just like oh lets go home.

But you can walk on the top of it.

Pinnacles are kinda alright I guess. If you're gonna go, go before EI3 and bring a few TVs and Wii's. Theres nothing else to do in that god forsaken town except go to the beach, and its gonna be winter :p

And yeah we could probs get 100 people maybi 150 or more.

if you wanna make it sound scarier... avcon actually had 410, but it had to be cut short to finish within 1 day lol. also its closer to 3k for day 1, the 4k was over both days.

So i guess expect 1000 entrants for gencon? haha that would be fun to organise :p

Perth would indeed be possible for me and ant since we have cousins over there, surely a trip to perth would be a lot better if its a mini-holiday of sorts, my parents could come :p lol thats doubtful. at any rate... Keep stuff out of uni holidays plz... be sure to check other states as well, not just WA :O

That does sound scarier.

Vyse: What happened this year may I ask? How many sign ups did you guys get?
I remembered that the SF4 scene did something there as well. They had over 50 people (less than I thought they would), and they literally would've all been kicked out of the venue if the guy that came up through the losers final had've won and forced the GF to go to another set.

Debacles.

I have doubts about how far they'd be willing to stretch things for you guys after reading your proposal, but as you say, if you were able to pull it off it would be great. I'd also be curious to see what sort of sponsors they'd come up with for you. I'm guessing probably stuff like Red Bull and general stuff like that.

Only about 20 entered, and that's because it was unhyped, and pretty much hidden away in a corner. Add to that it was on the Friday, not the Saturday, so we were pretty much screwed from the beginning.

I really REALLY feel as though a large tournament is entirely possible, but I need to actually put a lot of effort into it. This year more people were interested in playing friendlies, and the amount of people that came by to play for a while was pretty cool. So a FREE tournament would essentially seal the deal on those people.

At Animania, I had way waaaaaay more people sign up, despite it being a smaller event.

GenCon, rather than using the 4 days, I may well just run over the weekend depending on what time they finish on Sunday. There's just still a lot of uncertainty, but it's nothing I want to address until I'm finished Uni for the year.

But seriously, a 200 person event is entirely possible if we want it to be and if I can twist GenCon's arm enough.

Three strikes and you're out, Vyse.

Lol srsly when u get a whole bunch of noobs ****** the tournament scene(rofl!), its basically doomed to fail from the start as teh baibiez don't wanna play to lose and wanna spam-a-lot with teh EYYYYEEEEE-TEMMMMSS on Hyrule Castle!

Yes, make it a weekend and with a serious organised schedule for the day to the hour. Yada yada u know the drill Vyse but the most important part is getting to the right people at GayCum to allocate a reasonable time slot for Melee/Brawl Tourney. Oh wait, diss that - i just read the first page.

That and get Cao interested - he'll be able to help you run an OVER 9000 noobs tourney smoothly without a hitch. He already proved his manliness at ROCKY.

Stuff:
- 4 days is too much, 2 days of "Sirias Business" and one xtra optional day for those who can't get enough.

-200 people is too many, I don't think that would be enjoyable at all.
I think its **** just trying to attract people basically to take their money to make the prize pot bigger. For so many reasons.

-Other than that, I know this has potential to be the bestest, and theres too much other stuff to think about.

- I agree. Whilst 4 days may have worked for FAST1, I don't think it's a good idea. It's like spending more than half a week playing just smash. 4 days almost definitely won't happen.

- Genesis had 300 people, and it freakin rocked. Finals was an amazing experience because of the sheer amount of people watching and screaming. BUUUUT, there is a big difference between a tournament with scrubs and a tournament with smashers, which is what is being highlighted by your concerns most to me. Rocky succeeded because not only was it 100 smashers, it was 100 relatively familiar smashers.

I'll concede that trying to run pools for something like this would be a nightmare because a lot of people just wouldn't know how it works. That's something easily remedied by seeding the pools properly so that there's experienced players in each pool, but that's still asking a lot.

- We won't be taking any money at all. Because it's supposed to be SPONSORED. Nobody will be paying ANY money except for the venue entry fee to get into the convention. To get that sponsoship, we need to be striving for it, and whether we want to or not, if GenCon advertises this for me, we'll be getting 200 people without much say in the matter.

These are all just hopes mind you, nothing is guaranteed.

The idea of doing only Melee at LanSmash the weekend before, and then only Brawl at GenCon seems inviting. Would make for a 2 days event at GenCon much more feasible.

Anywho, I'm going to try and leave this all alone til after Uni's done.

I don't like it...think of all the potential new people that would not get to see Melee in all its glory, anyway, I came up with some good ideas at work, how bout this...

ASSUMING its the same as last year:

-------
Thursday - Nothing. Maybe set up early though?

Friday - Further setting up + friendlies + basically what we did this year and have casual set-ups for people to come by and give it a dig.

Saturday and Sunday: Basically do a Cao and have one event for each game on each day. This way all the random people that happen to be there and walk by will get to see BOTH games in action, besides its better for intertwining and Bi-Smashuality. Mmm.
Gotta try and get the late Sunday finish though.
Failing that, maybe have ONE event on the Friday NIGHT, 2 events on Sat and One (Melee something)+ Crews (both games) on Sunday?\

Thank you, I know its perfect, ya can thank me later.
In bed.

Good Point Bob. I wouldn't mind 3 days and forgetting about all 4 days entirely. Maybe over 2 and a half m.. I mean days, have a certain number in the "siras business" tourney and have plenty room for friendlies. Also With the tournies, maybe for one day have a noobies tourney for all the new people who are interested?

Hmm it could be like:

Fri: set up, advertise, play friendlies. Basically showing off the fun non competitive aspect to get people into it.

Saturday: Have 2 tournies. Brawl/Melee or Brawl/Friendly tourney in something or Melee/Friendly tourney.

Sunday: repeat Saturday.

Idk something along the lines of that would be good since having that number of people means that there would be a lot of new smashers and I don't think having there ***** handed to them is a good way to start. Also would there be enough top smashers to even out the not so good people?

Vyse.... $200 worth!? WANTZ. XD

Mixing up both games on both days is the only way for the Australian Smash community to move forward. None of this separatist stuff.

plus it means 1 day doesn't run almost twice as long as the other
Yea cause Melee takes ages nowadays =D

3 days for a big tourney is enough imo, 4 days would seem to drag on forever.

(Didn't really read most of the thread)

I wasn't implying that only have brawl or melee on one day at a time. I meant tourney wise have a casual and more serious tourney. The word friendly being either one.

I'm going to close this thread since I've pretty much let everyone know what's up with GenCon, and it's obvious what the other states want to do next year (except NSW). I wasn't really fishing for ideas, I just wanted to guage people's reaction to what I have to work with.

Later on in the year, I'll open a thread for 'major tournament registration' or something similar.
