Maybe you could turn this into the new book recommendation thread? That way people could still talk about the books they like and no one has to commit to anything . :p

Or not, but I could seriously use some book suggestions.

Actually, I quite like this idea. I'm always in the need of a new book. I APPROVE. I'll edit the OP after I clean the house.

What kind of book are you in the mood for?

I actually pretty much like any book that has decent pacing. But i think i'm in the mood for something thought provoking and creative. 1984 was the last novel I've read, and it was pretty beast just because it made me think.

Hmm, let's see. For something creative and thought-provoking, I'll leave you with a couple ideas.

  • Cat's Cradle by Kurt Vonnegut
  • The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes by Arthur Conan Doyle
  • A Canticle for Leibowitz by Walter J. Miller
  • Brave New World by Aldous Huxley

I love 1984. It's one of my favourite books of all time. I might have to dig that one out again.

Read Moby-Dick
I don't know how serious you're being but I don't know if I will ever want to read moby ****. I don't really like reading books when I know what is going to happen beforehand. I know it's classic literature but eh..

Believe it or not I haven't read 1984 yet. I'll look those all up when I next go to the library (Sacramento libraries suck :C).

I can guarantee you, some things in Moby **** you never knew happen, most of them of a homosexual manner.

"all books end in one of two ways: death to symbolize the envitable end, or in marriage to symbolize the continuation of life"

its what's in between that counts.

Haha, I love that in our posts the **** portion of moby **** is censored.

Hmm, homosexual manners you say? You sure know the way to my heart. Maybe I'll give it a shot. :p

You should read Oryx and Crake by Margaret Atwood. Or Handmaids Tale maybe... (I'm too much of an Atwood fan). I really realy liked The Blind Assasin too, but you say you want decent pacing and it was a little bit slow...

Yeah I just wanna recommend Atwood to anyone.

And 1984 is my favorite book too btw. But yeah... who wouldn't love that book? Its too good.

I thought the ongoing Maximum Ride series by James Patterson were good reads.

Anyone else read them?

-Terywj
I refuse to read James Patterson on principle. No offense, but there's a few things about that guy that really bother me. He's pretty popular though.

If you like Fantasy-based novels, then I would recommend reading the Inheritance Trilogy by Cristopher Paolini and the Bartimaeus Trilogy, by Jonathon Stroud.

1984, To Kill A Mockingbid and some Matthew Reilly books are also pretty good :)

If it hasn't been posted yet, the Pendragon Saga by DJ MacHale and The Ranger's Apprentice series by John Flanagan are two of my favorites. Ranger's Apprentice is on book 7 right now, the Pendragon Saga has 10 volumes and I had been reading it since like 7th grade and only just finished it a few months ago (senior in High School). They're more of a fantasy genre. The sci-fi books by Orson Scott Card i.e Ender's Game are really good, and anything by Brian Jaques is amazing.

These are only a few of the series I've read.. Maybe I'll post my library sometime?

Dr. Twist, The Hobbit is easily one of my favorite fantasy books EVER.

Anyway, if you want a lighthearted fantasy adventure then I highly reccomend Dragon Rider. Now, if you want something kind of bizzare and out of the norm in terms of style, then Abarat is pretty good and well worth a read. I'm not going to give anything away, but my only problem with the book was the ending. Other than that, it's well worth checking out.

I'd suggest Memoirs of a Geisha if you haven't already read it. The writing imagery is amazing.

I highly suggest any of HP Lovecraft's works. Horror, Fantasy, Science, and Insanity all at once. Hear of Cthulu? Wonder where he comes from?

How about Azathoth?

Exactly? Read HP Lovecraft's works, and all will be explained.
Cthulu Ftaghn.

Angels And Demons/The Lost Symbol are both good. The Stranger is probably the best book I've ever read, though.

If you like fantasy and you are not reading the "A Song of Ice and Fire" series something is wrong with you.
....
I love Hp Lovecraftt ♥

Oh and if you like experimental/urban fantasy try anything by China Mieville. His fantasy works are genuis.

In Sephiroth's hands.
The princess bride is a good read, it's better than the movie, which well represents the book.

I love the satire of the book itself and not to mention all the little quirks hear and there.

I advise the Harry Potter series and the Twilight saga.
You are underaged cancer and I do not approve your "contribution" to this thread.

Excuse me..
I suggest The Picture of Dorian Gray and Dante's Divine Comedy.

and Soulja Boy's Crank Dat Life, a thought provoking autobiography filled with much kfc, kissing through communication devices and making prostitutes wear capes after partaking in sexual acts.

If a business flair is needed try A Dilbert Future. No, it's not an anthology of Dilbert cartoons but is instead a book in which Scott Adams gives his ideals of the future. With some cartoons thrown in.

I've read some of Mieville's short stories, but I've yet to find any of his books around. It's a shame, because I would very much like to read some more of his work.

At the moment, I'm working my way through the Dune novels. Frank Herbert, none of that Brian Herbert junk. It's a pretty darn good series, though nothing compares to the first novel. I've managed to nab some of Italo Calvino's work, so that'll be next after I finish slogging my way through three and a half books.

What are everyone's thoughts on Robinson Crusoe, the novel? I checked it out from the library yesterday, and I want some spoiler-free thoughts while I read through it.
