the music i've been listening to from oct 06-may07 and then.. maybe jan 08 - current.

stopped scrobbling for a while because i really felt it was starting to influence what i listened to. i think i'm around that now...
anyway... if i had scrobbled during that time there would be a pretty huge spike in bloc party and the fall of troy.. but oh well.

i like just about every kind of music, metal-ish sorts are kind of reigning but electronic, indie, and some hip hop are on the rise =P

My favorite band is Radiohead, by far. No one else has even come close to me.

Beyond that, I care a lot more about vocals then anything else in a band, so I like anything. My Ipod on shuffel literally jumps from Snoop Dog to Meatloaf, to Thom Yorke to Rob Zombie.

I love some music. The main ones are:

Boston. This is undoubtedly the greatest band that ever lived.

Cold. I just love listening to their music. It really is cool. Best post-grunge band of the whole movement.

Motley Crue. The Crue is the boss, always has been. I've also been listening to Nikki Sixx's new project, Sixx AM. They're amazingly talented as well.

Guns N' Roses. My favorite 80's rock band, hands down.

Metallica. They just produced too many classics to not be mentioned.

Van Morrison. My jazz band has covered a lot of his pieces. My favorite is "Moondance".

Chicago. Truly really cool experience.

Tenacious D. They just win.

BANDS I ABSOLUTLY HATE (and why)
DRAGONFORCE: my all time most hated metal band because 1.they suck live, and i love good live performers like iron maiden 2.all of their songs have the same feel to them, sure they can pump out a lot of notes and are great guitarists, ill give them that but its like they dont know how to solo. if you take slayer (my fav of all time) youll notice a lot of shredding and sloppy solos which is wat made thrash thrash, but then take dragon force and youll see that they play fast but u wont see just how well because u have 2 guys playing all nice a cleanly at the same time.
GREEN DAY: overplayed and repetitive (i admit, i liked dookie)
LORDI: they are like gwar retarted little brother, they try so hard to be like them and jus fail GWAR>lordi.
LAMB OF GOD: lamb of god is to slayer as lordi is to gwar (see above)
id go on but im bored, ill do more ltr. CHECK OUT MY YOUT TUBE, MISSEDWITHTRUESTRIKE

My list:

The Beatles (best band ever)
They might Be Giants (best band still together)
Mike Oldfield (the man)
Gorillaz
Alan Parsons Project
Queen
Fountains of Wayne
Michelle Branch
Vanessa Carlton
Elton John
The Killers
The Rocket Summer
KT Tunstall
Coldplay
Donovan
Beck
Weird Al
Blur
Michael Jackson
The Presidents of the United States of America
The Cranberries

and also a load of soundtracks:
Star Wars, especially Episode IV
Lord of the Rings
Death Note
various Zelda games

I don't really go for that Emo stuff; too annoying/miserable for me. I don't really like Metal either; it's just too angry. I prefer happy music. I also don't really like Hip-Hop or Rap, or country. Give me my rock, my pop, my progressive stuff, and my game music, and I'll be just fine.

how do you differentiate "rap" and "hip hop"?
the question is my friend... how don't you? lol

There are many contrasts in the two. For example you can dance to Hip Hop but not necessarily rap. And now that i think of it I misplaced Luda and Cham in the wrong spots (it's opposite). But anyways, rap is generally more underground... hence the number of mixtapes both Lil' Wayne, Chamillionaire and countless others have. Hip Hop is more mainstream and "acceptable" in todays society. To another extent Hip Hop is the culture i.e graffiti, the DJ'ing, dance ( break dance), and rap an art form because of how it represents the feeling of the emcee or nowadays the "rapper". The overall point is that rap&hip-hop don't necessarily go hand in hand.

...so would public enemy be considered hip hop, becoss its mainstream?
and what about de la soul and a tribe called quest?

entailing the title of this thread:
modest mouse, built to spill, radiohead, les savy fav, the blood brothers, pyschostick, etc etc.

i'm actually very in love with the recent radiohead album in rainbows, although i like the free video podcasts better! :D

it's okay though, i love ctts and portugal.. thursday is pretty good too.
but anyway

this is how i've always known hip hop, it was pretty much the first incarnation of MCing over a beat, and as you said it was the culture of bboying, graf, DJing, and MCing. therefore, my definition is the opposite of yours, in that people like ludacris and lil wayne are fake hip hop, while underground artists are real hip hop, that (most of them) immerse themselves i nthe culture. mainstream sellouts are garbage for the most part, and don't even deserve the title imho.

I saw Radiohead live recently. While I've been a Radiohead fan for years, they bored me. Really, without the special effects, they would have been just utterly and terribly boring, and I would have left. They just stood there... and played their instruments. Not entertaining in the least bit. The only energy came from the special effects, not from one of the band members - not even from Thom Yorke's "crazy monkey dance".

To add on to my current disliking of Radiohead, I can't stand In Rainbows. It's not Radiohead to me. I'm a Bends, OK Computer, Kid A, Hail to the Thief fan (Pablo Honey was a bit distasteful, and Amnesiac is just Kid A b-sides for the most part). After waiting for years for a new album, they release In Rainbows, and it's far too mellow for Radiohead. It's like writing a 10-track album full of "You and Whose Army"s. All the crap on In Rainbows sounds the same. Don't believe me? See them live. The only songs that stand out when they play live are the old ones.

I gotta side with you about In Rainbows, in between bodysnatchers and jigsaw falling into place, you're right, its like listening to "I will" from ok comp 7 times in a row.
But bodysnatchers, jigsaw, and weird fishes more than make up for it. plus the chorus for faust arp is just too catchy! :p

I'm going to see them live in early august, but should i...?

I like a very wide range of music, from folk rock to black metal. Mostly anything but country. I just can't listen to country.

Favorite band is probably muse. Neo-prog is awesome (songs about pegasus riding knights of the apocalypse fighting in space. And how george bush is EVAL) and they are beastly live. Probably the best I can think of.

If you want to see a show where about 1/3 - 1/2 of it is In Rainbows, then go ahead. Otherwise, you might want to watch your money. It is Radiohead though, and seeing as how they really aren't big on touring much in the states, you might not want to miss the chance to at least see them live. I can't tell you how you'll enjoy it, so judge them for yourself. If you were just like me though, I would advise you not to go, because I would never buy tickets to another Radiohead show unless it was something epic like their last show ever and it was in my town or a town nearby (would never happen).

Music: I'll isten to just about everything, with the exception of rap and country.

A few of the bands I like, nearly all of which are 70's/80's:

Beatles (obviously) - also some of Lennon and McCartney's post-Beatles stuff
Eagles/Don Henley
Foreigner
Bon Jovi
Journey/Steve Perry
Scorpions
Warrant
Dokken
Queensrÿche - Eyes of a Stranger is my current song on MySpace
Styx
Winger
Def Leppard

Not necessarily in order. There's more, but I can't think of them.

Stemage: http://metroidmetal.com GO THERE.
Nightwish: I love symphonic metal and I love it when women sing.
Dethklok: YOU PEOPLE OUT THERE GIVE US MORE THAN JUST RECORD SALES....YOU GIVE US SOMETHING TO HATE!!!!!!!
My Chemical Romance: I know, I know, I'm a bad person. But they're fun as hell, and the fact that they brutally bash their fanbase is awesome, considering I hate their fanbase.
Trout Fishing in America: One of the best folk bands I've ever heard, and hands-down my favorite. I've been to a number of their concerts, too, and they're totally chill dudes.
Priestess: Something about the way the lead singer does his stuff is awesome.
That's all I got right now.
