E3 2014 - Super Smash Bros. Invitational - Players/Rules Announced

More important than declaring a winner, however, this event is a celebration of all things Super Smash Bros., and a great way for new and veteran fans to take part in a tribute to this legendary franchise.

After reading this part, does anyone else think they should've branded this as a 15th anniversary tournament as well? Because that would sound like a perfect way to tie into a statement like this.

There was a demo for Brawl that is similar to this demo, and it had 2 surprise newcomers. Dedede and Pokemon Trainer. I'd expect there to be the revealed cast as playable characters and 1-2 new guys.

The expert players could also find a way to wave dash and/or L cancel.

I am extremely excited. Not only because I'm going to be able to play a demo within the next two months, but because this is amazing news for the competitive community. Not once before has Nintendo shown this level (or pretty much any level) of support for the tournament side of Smash. Not only does this basically confirm that the game is being tailored to the hardcore crowd, but Nintendo is actually going above and beyond, and contacting the very players they've shunned in the past. It's almost like an incredibly grand apology, and it's a huge undertaking for Nintendo to do something of this nature and magnitude. It really means something when Nintendo/Sakurai actually make reversals such as this scale, as it's really not the way they operate.

Needless to say, I'm stoked. Absolutely overjoyed. This almost feels like a dream, because I never would have imagined in a million years that Nintendo would make this sort of approach to the community.

I think the players that will get invites are players who like and play more than one Smash game, players who've shown interest in Smash 4, and players who are big Nintendo fans outside of Smash.

I really, really, REALLY hope that the "16 highly-skilled Super Smash Bros. players" are legit pro players (like M2K, Mango, Amsa, Armada, Dr. PeePee, etc.) and not something like the best players in the Smash 4 development team, or something like that.

I hope you're joking, because if you're not... You're being pessimistic in the worst way possible. In the very least Nintendo is going to put together a group of the best employee players they have, but I'm pretty sure we're going to get some actual people from the competitive Smash scene. Nintendo wouldn't have worded it the way they did if they meant Youtubers who play games for entertainment and are rarely good at them, let alone good at an actual competitive game like Smash Bros.

Sakurai also said we couldn't customize costumes, so if Mii is in, they'll possibly be set costumes. Like Villager is. It might even be specific Nintendo employees, using particular colors for each team.

I just had the most awesome idea for an event. Match up a pro-smasher with an internet celebrity and compete in doubles matches. "Smashing with the Stars".
