Because the game is a celebration of Nintendo's history. Therefore the more successful franchises are automatically more important than the semi-successful ones.
Sales are the best way to determine popularity.
Agreed to a degree, but I would argue critical success is also an important factor, so comparing metascores is not a bad idea (although it is in no way the most important factor.) A games legacy should also be taken into consideration; a game which may have had a niche release but went on to be an influential cult game to modern developers is in it's own way important.

I think it's almost certain a character (or two, but probably just one) will be revealed at the end of the Invitational. Figured this since it was announced. Thousands of fans all there.

It will either be a huge newcomer reveal or a Melee favorite/veteran. I feel like that would make the most sense. Regardless who they are, they'll get a trailer.

The actual digital event will reveal a few vets and at least 1-2 newcomers. If Pac-Man, or any other 3rd parties, are in, this would be the time. Hopefully it will be a reveal-level trailer featuring several newcomers and vets at once.

My HOPE is that they reveal the intro to the game, somewhere during the show, showing off all the vets/newcomers in CG with a vid comparable to Melee's intro, Brawl's cutscenes and the vids we've seen so far.

I agree with this entirely. Revealing at least one character at the end of the tournament is way too good of an opportunity to pass up. There's going to be 3000 people with probably close to half of them cosplaying Nintendo characers at the event itself FFS. Nintendo's been advertising this for an entire month too so the view count is probably going to wind up being several hundred thousand at the very least. If Nintendo were to announce someone like Mewtwo or Ridley at this time, they wouldn't be able to handle all the hype. It would be the top news for gaming and social media sites for an entire week afterwards. It just makes too much sense from a marketing perspective.

Speaking on the subject of intros, I'd like a more streamlined one, A la Melee, instead of say, Brawl's.

I agree. I really liked the idea of someone (or many): revealing Mewtwo at the end of the tournament, and I think it fits: Mewtwo is one of the more requested and popular characters, he has been in one of the games and now could make a triumphant return. He's technically a newcomer, but also a veteran, and to showcase him during a tournament, where people know how Mewtwo plays but don't know what's changed this time, just works in my eyes. Why not even tie him into the tournament somehow, maybe have him as a final opponent for the winner. I don't know how the tournament will work out though but something like that would be cool, and some sort of a reveal seems quite likely to me.

Facts/predictions:
-CandyCrush block as a third party rep.
-75m and hanenbow as returning stages
-solo ice climber as a veteran

Hopefully playing hooky on June 10th. :p

I'm extremely confident in Mewtwo now. Pikachu sticking out of his box seals the deal for me.

I doubt that is related, and it's more just to make some characters look better. But dammit, why won't Samus be outside her box?!

Anyways, do we expect a Wii-Fit Trailer-like reveal? As in, after the main event, on the show floor?

I thought that up a week or so ago. Have the winner of the tournament suddenly get "A Challenger Approaches!" warning, and faces a (probably overpowered) newcomer or veteran that demonstrates its moveset, defeating the guy. Then you show the ending trailer which is either the character trailer or the opening to SSB4. My original design was have it be Captain Falcon and end it on a Falcon Punch, but he was an unlockable secret in Brawl, so he might be again.

I'm not saying I expect it to happen, but I wouldn't be entirely surprised if Nintendo revealed the full Smash roster at E3. It'd build hype to an unbelievable degree, and the game could easily be out next month on the 3DS. I have a feeling that Sakurai will want the full roster revealed ahead of release this time to avoid the leaks like we saw before Brawl (and I believe Melee too).

Agreed to some extent. But it's still a case of those niche/cult games still don't deserve as much representation as Nintendo's key franchises. The ones that pretty much everyone knows (and SF does indeed fit this category).

I think we could, not necessarily a newcomer. Maybe an important/changed returning vet like Mewtwo, Snake or Ganondorf.

Is there an objective reason to support that conclusion?

Wow, I remember when the thread's name was "40 days remaining" as if it were yesterday.

Because it was for me. I am a time-traveler, after all.

Anybody got some ideas for what a E3 Announcement Bingo should look like? Specifically for Smash Bros?

So we're all in agreement that the winner of the tournament is going to have play Mew2King as Mewtwo, right?

I literally know none of the people in this tournament.

Will I still enjoy it?
You do not know ANYONE on the list? I suppose you are not that into competitive Smash. I am sure that everyone will enjoy it, it is essentially two and a half hours of game-play. You do not even need to consider it a tournament if that does not appeal to you. Just observe it for the characters, see how the game runs! It will be great.

Nope, not a one. I figured you knew that I know next to nothing of competitive Smash?

I'm sure I will enjoy it anyway. If I didn't know these people before, I definitely will afterwards.

So basically it is your subjective opinion?
No. It's maths.

Let's take Rosalina as a character for example. She essentially represents the Mario Galaxy games, the highest selling one of which sold:12+ million.
Now let's take Shulk. The highest selling game that he has appeared playable in has sold: <1 million.

Now it doesn't take a genius to decipher which one is going to appeal to a broader range of people.

But we know of X which is a spiritual successor to Xenoblade and Shulk can advertise it and promote sales. Just nitpicking.

Why do sales matter at all?

I'm not saying that the lesser characters don't deserve to be playable. It's just that there's a pecking order. The more popular series' are obviously going to appeal to a broader range of people.

Sales = popularity.

Anyone can sit there and say that they love such and such. But if they don't support the product then that really doesn't mean anything. Money talks louder than words.

That doesn't take niche markets as compared to mass appeal into account. The people that would be attracted to Rosalina would already be interested in the game due to the various other Mario characters representing Galaxy and the Mario franchise. A character like Shulk would attract a very different audience which you may not other wise have.

I suppose you would be correct if he was consistently trying to appeal to a more broad range of individuals (which is achieved just as effectively with characters from cult classic games). Is there any proof that this is Sakurai's intent for every single character on the roster? I would appreciate it very much if you could link the source that indicates such. I am going to assert that it is irrelevant. Why? Because we have Mario, we have Link, we have Pikachu, we have Kirby, we have Fox, we have Samus, and we have Donkey Kong. So Shulk is fairly negligible, after that Sakurai considers diversity. Sales are a contributing factor, but Shulk is just as appealing as Rosalina within most Smash circles. Why, you might ask? Perhaps it has to do with his raw move-set potential.

If you wish to interpret the surface of the perspective whilst blatantly disregarding other material facts, be my guest; however, it is not going to get you anywhere as it is not objectively true. No one really cares about your opinion, sadly.

To some extent. Rosalina as a character has certainly increased in popularity recently though. There may be a lot of younger girls that buy the game just to play as their favorite princess. So it goes both ways. TBH neither character is likely to effect sales one way or another.

But, really, we're getting into subjective territory here now.

But what is indisputible is that Rosalina will appeal to a broader range of people, because she's been exposed to a broader range of people (if you take MK sales alone, at least 35 million have bought a game that has her as a playable character, whether or not they bought it to play as her, that's over 35million times the amount of exposure that Shulk has had). Of course these are also extreme examples.

There has to be a balance of both.

Once a character is in Smash, they become instantly appealing (or at least by the time the game launches). I for one still despise Mr. Game & Watch and R.O.B; however, they have their fan-bases. Most people could not possibly fathom Ice Climbers (irrelevant Nintendo characters outside of Smash) being omitted just because they have become accustomed to them. So regardless, characters like Shulk will appeal to almost everyone that buys the game.

I'm actually waiting on my ongoing job hunt until after E3 week is over. The last thing I'd want is to have to work just at the worst possible time.

E3 > Work. Remember that. I have an office job in marketing where people largely leave me alone, so I'm going to be streaming ALL day at work.

Neither Sonic or Kirby were sticking out during the Direct. So I'd assume that this hints at something, as it did last time.

Also crossing my fingers for Chorus Men.
I can watch the world burn AND get Rhythm Heaven representation. It's a win win!

I would skip school, but I've missed over one month of school in this quarter, and I don't want Summer School, and I certainly don't want to stay back.

Fingers crossed that the leak is as fake as it appears.
