Hmm. I wonder if it's bad for someone to only be able to play with other people but not really have the time or rather, 'place' to really honker down and practice?

Better than just practicing techskill without playing people; try to get the real basics down (e.g. l cancels, wave dashes, jc grabs), and don't play some super tech heavy character, and you'll be better than people investing far more time but can't play people.

i have some ideas, but i need to refine them a bit and something came up for tonight. i'm not blowing it off for once at least.

kage: the full story was like... kevin's girlfriend wanted to go to the pet store and i was like **** yeah i'll take you, and then her roommate and kevin and their friend mike (everlasting yayhuzz) tagged along with us. cool. so i was petting a smokey grey kitten through the bars of a cage with my fingers because you can't take them out of the cage right? and then kevin came over and we were talking about whatever and i turned to the kitten and it was purring so i was like "okay now do you like me or do you just like the attention?" and then kevin said something like "dude the cat thinks you have really nice fingers" so i turned to him and with a dead straight face i was like "dude i have the nicest fingers". and then like right next to me was one of the female employees our age ish like taking care of another cat, and she looks up at me and just turns this really deep red, and she got up and was clearly flustered and walked away, and we just laughed and laughed. good times.

edit: i guess we had a bonding moment when we watched a bar fight. that's love there.

Yeah the raging bromance between Umbreon and PP is definitely one of the weirder parts of smashboards. And that's saying a lot.

i think this section is going to come out really cool actually.

i want to hit up a few of my private non-smash confidants and it should be up tomorrow night

edit: can i move to get a sticky for this thread once it's updated tomorrow? i know it's a long WIP but i think it's at the point where enough people are reading this and should be stickied.

edit 2: espeon has a much higher base speed to be fair.

Oh god I can't believe you actually changed the title of the thread to that. I wonder how many people you'll throw off just based on first look at title alone.

i updated the writing by adding a section on aggression. i'm not sure i phrased what i was trying to say in the best manner so i may go back and change it later.

I like it. I used to be purely defensive waiting and lately I have been aiming to play in this light. I don't fully understand it yet but am making progress.

Idk if it's because I already have a good grasp on the concept or because I completely missed the point, but I didn't feel like I learned anything (honest feedback, no offense intended). I think pressure or presence would be a better term to describe the combination of offense and defense. To me, aggression implies taking action against an opponent (even if that action is only movement), so it's really just a synonym for offense. In Melee, moving away from someone or even standing still are also forms of pressure or presence that allow you to exert threats on opponents, but they are certainly not aggressive. Your character has a meaningful presence on the screen at all times in such a way that your positioning puts pressure on different parts of an opponent's plan. If you are in the hitstun of a combo, you certainly have less presence and impose less pressure on your opponent, but there is some pressure because they have to face the fact that you will eventually be out of stun and able to attack. Then of course there's pressure in neutral game where you make them feel your presence and want to shield, or you make them feel a lack of presence by dashing away so they overextend.

It makes me think of a flexible pressurized chamber. If you push on the left side of the chamber, the pressure increases and the air inside must move right. If you pull on the left side, air from the right surges to fill the low pressure area that was created. Not sure how useful anyone will find that analogy in terms of spacing in Melee.

In other fighting game communities I've heard the neutral game being referred to as something like the 'push and pull phase', so I think that's a pretty intuitive analogy to describe the situation.

getting ***** is the best part about this game
I 100% agree with this. Before meeting Rice, a beastly falco in our area. I would constantly get away with the same crap over and over again with everyone else. Barely needing to adapt.

Now that I get to play rice more frequently, he destroys me and beats me like 9 out of 10 games. But I have so much fun, because it's so fast paced, I get to think quickly, and I have to constantly adapt cuz he's constantly adapting to EVERYTHING I do.

Most everyone else I would crouch cancel grab them too easily all the time. I did that to rice only once, and he punished me with an anti-crouch cancel move immediately after the first punish. So now I'm being forced to think of counters to my counters so I can think 2 steps ahead.

It's so damn fun.

Also this thread is beast.

yeah it's alright.

translating the advanced aspects of the neutral game into english is basically impossible and i have no intention of trying to. it's better for me to just give the concept and to hope that people will review what i'm saying 6 or 7 times while learning it to get a feel for what's actually going on. it's hard stuff. an example is probably a good idea and i'll try to fish one out.

you guys should pester the staff to get this stickied. they don't listen to me anymore because i'm old and bad like jigglypuff players.

The reason people play melee is not because they find getting *****, combo'd, read and beaten fun. The reason people play melee is because they find ******, combo'ing, accomplishment and winning fun.

I play to learn. I already had this entire topic plotted out in my head before I read it and found it refreshing that someone else did too and managed to do the idea justice. But still, I play to learn as much as I play to win. So from stock to stock, I feel victory as well as defeat, and the match itself doesn't matter too much if I won because of the opponents mistakes and not my own execution. I just play to interact with the opponents, see what they can do, and show them what I can do. Competition is great and fun, you can be lighthearted about the entire idea and still be good, you just have to be devoted, and you can still get better by analyzing your defeats, even if you laugh them off outwardly.

How to figure out what you are doing wrong/what part of your strategy is flawed. You sort of touched on it, but didn't really go in depth. I get really annoyed when I study a bunch of gameplay and then someone comes along and within a minute points out 5 things that I didn't notice which could notably improve my gameplay.

oh that's easy, just ask people that know what they're talking about. make some friends and ask them. seek to learn from many different sources and try to differentiate which are the most valuable ones. i don't think it's really worth a section past my intro thing about being social. it just kinda comes with the territory.

i guess i'll make a point about it in the strategy evaluation since it kinda fits in there.

people are talkin a lot about characters lately. perhaps address issues such as "why play this character that's good vs the one I like" or other things.

or the doughnut love squelch. I'm perfectly fine reading either.

ok so i was at apex 2013 and i was walking around with dr pp's girl and mango's girl (both named lauren of course) so we all walked up to kirbykaze...from behind. so the laurens start talking to him and being women and spewing projectile estrogen at him and having girl time. so i was thinking like i need in on this. so i walked up behind kirbykaze and slapped him on the ass because taking command of the situation is a manly thing to do. so he turns around and he has a dozen donuts, and he offers me a donut. mission accomplished, i plowed the donut and it was beautiful and exciting and we forged a deep bond of love over this donut. so we start talking dirty talk with lots of sexual innuendos about sheik because... smashers. then dr pp's lauren comes up to me and has half of her donut and says she doesn't want the other half and do i want it and i say eww no you have girl cooties and that it's basically a medically recognized STD. so she takes her half a donut and grabs my face and puts the donut into my face and forcefully pushed it down my throat with her fingers. and then i openly wept bitch tears and felt powerless. it's still pretty traumatic and i haven't been able to eat a donut since.

edit: kevin why would you of all people like this? your woman basically sexually assaulted me in public. that's messed up man.

I think you need to more fully describe what you mean by "interact" and "engage". You set them up rather generally, but then use them specifically to explain some points that are based on the differences between them which you don't really go through beforehand. Without this distinction it will only make sense to people who already kinda know what you mean.

came here to post something like this.

my main goals in melee are to have fun and to try and learn more about how the game works. i don't need to stick with one character or spend a lot of time practicing tech skill to accomplish these goals (although i do it sometimes because i do like winning)

i agree with you most of the time umbreon, but who are you to tell me that i'm a scrub for wanting to test my skill with multiple characters? who are you to tell me the "right" way to play melee? people play this game for tons of different reasons, and everyone has different goals. what's wrong with that?
