For the Dr. Mario stage posted above, I suggest giving the viruses giving strong upward knockback, KOing anyone above 100%. :p

But even strong upwards knockback has no guarantee of sending people through the bottleneck, so you've just got players bouncing around in there they're in a meth-fuelled pinball game.

Yes, because calling someone out on being an ass in general means they are are an angry son of a dog. :troll:
Quite hypocritical if you ask me.

As for Viruses being "randomly forced", this is not entirely true.
Allow me to show you an example of Viruses being used against people:

Funny enough, that was done by Namco...

>You tell me to PM you to stop being off-topic
>I say I'll PM you to stop being off-topic
>You carry on anyway despite the fact I'm writing a PM to you as we speak
>Contradictions, contradictions everywhere

I'm PM-ing you now so just - you know - leave it. You don't always have to get the last word in.

I didn't actually know there were viruses in Mario Kart Arcade GP though, that's a good catch. Even with that being said, I'd still find it out-of-character for Dr. Mario to have them, since they're pretty much the 'villains' (or closest things to them) in Dr. Mario. I suppose they could explain it off because after all, doctors do have vaccinations and the like so I guess they do dabble with viruses when they're not trying to eradicate them, but for some reason it'd still seem off to me. I'd much prefer the Viruses as either an item or better, an Assist Trophy.

To be fair, Dr. Mario isn't exactly a normal doctor by any stretch of the means.
I mean, his main method of dealing with health issues and opponents is popping pills. :troll:

EDIT: And with that, I have to say the obligatory:
Brightly colored pills, they'll cure all your ills.
Just as long as you got fever or the chills.

Reminds me of that quote by Miyamoto - I can't remember what he said exactly, but he discussed how most of Mario's jobs are labourer jobs with the exception of Dr. Mario, and went on to discuss how Dr. Mario's 'doctor' position may well be less than legitimate. Sort of adds a darker layer to Dr. Mario's character, if you ask me. :v

Although I wouldn't mind seeing the viruses, if they introduced a more complex damage system for Doc. If there was some kind of system in which the Doc's Pill move and Virus move did different damage based on the colours and combinations of colours (akin to how Olimar's Pikmin all have different effects), I could get much more on-board with that. Otherwise, it'd seem like a waste to me.

That's actually a concept I had. That Side B (Viruses) would infect upon contact, and that the B (Megavitamins) can "cure" the infection if they match the color, but with increased damage output.

EDIT: Also, I see the PM. I'll read and respond later today after Easter celebrations are over.

An interesting idea. But how long would the infection last? It'd be a very delicate balancing act to make that concept work well, yet if it did it'd be a really interesting mechanic to properly differentiate him from Mario. But I'm at a loss for what button the viruses should be mapped to - I think the Side B actually makes more sense on Doc than Regular Mario (since he's actually wearing a doctor's coat with a long back-bit), but I like the Down B tornado too, and would like to see it returned to its SSB64 glory (as a powerful move and a spike) if Mario doesn't get it back himself.

I do think Dr. Mario should return. To me it felt very unjustified that the character didn't return, because I thought the character's playstyle was pretty great and I felt it should of been expanded further. But I guess people are really spiteful towards clones or something, but whatever...

One thing for sure is that making the character a lowly alternate costume and dumping the attributes to Mario would be a disgrace to the doctor's name.

I honestly wouldn't mind Dr. Mario returning as an alternative to Mario.

Because you're obviously being sarcastic.
I don't follow where you're going with this... So by wanting a character to return, you think I'm this vicious abomination of humanity that should be executed? Well being rude to others is no way to get friends, now is it.

You're going to be pretty upset when Dr. Mario comes back, just to spite you. I mean, I like the character in Melee due to being a stronger yet risky version of Mario, but at the same time the character could use some tweaks to make him stand out more. One idea that came to mind was the Megavitamins, which I think should grant Dr. Mario the ability to inflict different status when the two sides of the pills match up. Blue for freeze, red for stun, and yellow for flower.

Sarcasm or no sarcasm, I actually really like the idea of mono-coloured pills having different effects.

No sarcasm. I actually liked Doc in Melee, and was mildly saddened when he wasn't in Brawl. I understand his cut, but was outright pissed when I learned that they cut Mewtwo.

doc is just a lazy, poorly done excuse for a character!

clones in melee were like the dumbest thing in existence, and i don't even understand how anyone could like the same character twice!

it's like, mario is RIGHT ****ing there! why not just use him if you guys like doc so much! theyre the EXACT same! no differences whatsoever besides the lame replacing of fireballs with pills! none!

why add all the stupid, lame clones where there are soooooo many other UNIQUE mario characters you could add instead of them! YEAH, that's right!

like, for example, you could add bowser jr, who uses a WHOLE ENTIRE paintbrush and could be like a lightweight version of bowser! bowser is like the biggest character in the game, so that would be ****ing awesome to see!

you guys just hate variety or something, thats all! because theres NO way anyone can like a character whos just another version of a character, its not just rational!

Clones are absolutely stupid, and anyone who supports them is an idiot!
After all, anyone who likes clones for whatever reason absolutely hates variety! They cannot possibly like both!
I know this because I completely hate clones because they get in the way of variety if there is even one of those vile things. All of the great fighting games don't have a single clone/semiclone.

There is also no possible way to make Dr. Mario different like Wolf/Lucas. I should know; I know everything.
Using doctor's equipment is completely non-canon to the Dr. Mario games unlike the Super Sheet, which he uses all the time. Canon is completely important, as that's why Captain Falcon has his famous Falcon Punch.
Dr. Mario is also just Mario in a lab coat. By definition, he cannot be different like Zelda in a Sheikah suit or Samus without her armor. Hell, even Mario with a paper artstyle can be completely different. All those examples are of alternate styles of an existing character that literally cannot be the same, unlike Mario in a lab coat, who literally cannot be different. It's not a double standard by any means.

(This is where April Fool's gets fun.)

I really like the idea of Doc's pills having different status effects. It sounds like a more practical and fun move.

But, some people were saying before that they would like to see viruses being used, and pills being used to heal the virus (if matched with the same colour), doing more damage perhaps. I like that idea as well. So, how about there's a special that releases a random virus, which causes a status effect depending on the colour (freeze, stun, flower), but could also be charged? The longer it's charged then released, the longer the effect will last. The pill would be another special, and can "remove" the status effect, if hit, causing more damage than normal...or maybe having some other special effect? though balance is one thing we have to look at

Having moves that work in conjunction with each other might make for a fun moveset/playstyle. Kinda reminds me of Pokemon, how there are moves that deal more damage depending on the opponent's status effect, but also curing the effect at the same time (like SmellingSalt and Wake-Up Slap).

Ok, pills can do Dr.Mario like stuff. And Down B being the Melee version of his Mario Tornado while Mario get's Galaxy Spin is also good enough Luigification. Yet what about the normal moves? I don't really see him doing anything different than Mario in these. And I'm VERY against doctor equipment in his moveset.

By the way, I guess you could consider me a mild supporter right at the moment. I might of been bitter earlier over the idea of the character Dr. Mario, but I suppose the character could be worth it if given that zing and flare. Believe it or not, but I do like the concept of a combat medic.

Hahaha, I do like the idea of a combat medic as well. It's probably because I play Team Fortress Classic, and TF2 so much. And especially in TC's case, combat medic kicks ass. Though, I'm sure they won't go too extreme with Doc, as in make him run around with a bonesaw and some "sadistic" persona..but you never know...Doc should really be played up more, as this thread has a lot of innovative ideas that would be hilarious and really cool if used.

I do like Dr. Mario better then Mewtwo, at least in the context of Super Smash Bros. Also because whatever newcomer for the Mario series is pretty iffy in general, but at least with Dr. Mario there is familiar territory to try and experiment with.

Also I will say that I do like the Dr. Mario games, with my favorite version being Dr. Mario 64.

I was thinking about how there are references to the vehicles for Specials for Fox and C. Falcon, and it got me to thinking, would it make sense to emulate the gameplay of Dr. Mario into his Specials in a similar way (or possibly into some of his normals if that makes more sense)?
Like for an example, we know Doc tosses pills, right? Well, how he does it is not referenced within Melee. And before you think you know where I'm going with this, I'm going to stop you and say that I'm not going to say to change his Megavitamin move to be more like his home series. What I am going to say is have his Up Special be changed to where he's tossed upwards like how he tosses his pills.
Now, how could that happen, you may ask? Well, ask Nurse Toadstool, Dr. Mario's right-hand nurse who barely appears in the series itself:

My idea is that she quickly appears behind Dr. Mario, and as you would expect a devious cartoonish nurse to do, jabs him in the rear end with a comically oversized needle, which sends Doc flying upwards grabbing on to his buttocks while kicking his legs about (think of it like when Bowser lights Mario on fire in SM64), which can hurt opponents. After the initial jump, Doc then falls downward while stiff as a board (due to fright from falling from such a height against his will :troll:) to replicate movement of a Megavitamin in his games. Pressing the A Button in this state will make Doc quickly shift 90 degrees, which can damage opponents. Pressing Down will make Doc instantly drop to the ground below him (or into the Blast Line below if there is no ground, so be careful) for a big hit to replicate such an action in his games.

I got this idea from thinking of where in a moveset would make sense to give Dr. Mario a giant syringe to use, and then I remembered Injection Fairy Lily from Yu-Gi-Oh, which made me think of having Nurse Toadstool be the one to use it. And since it's meant to be comical, I figured it would be more funny and less iatrophobia-inducing if Dr. Mario was the one to get the shot to make him fly like a rocket. And then I thought of how it can be used to replicate an aspect of gameplay from the Dr. Mario series afterwards.

Interesting idea, or back to the drawing board?

Considering his Dark Pit avatar, it was expected sooner or later. :troll:

Stuff featuring Nurse Peach
I have to say... that would be unexpected, yet completely hilarious. :rotfl:

Thinking about it... that move seems like a good idea to differentiate him from regular Mario, while keeping a comical nature.

Dr. Mario getting a needle shoved up his rear as a recovery move? That'd be one interesting and hilarious move for sure lol.

Actually, I was thinking about recovery moves before. Hmmm, but tying to reference/emulate to the gameplay of Dr. Mario...I haven't played Dr. Mario, mind you, but I've seen vids and whatnot, so I'll try and hopefully this makes sense...

B^ - Megavitamin Staircase: Doc pulls out pills right in front of him, making an upward staircase (by stacking them a little) in whatever direction he's facing. It also deals a bit of damage if someone gets in his way. He basically climbs the pill stairs, though I'm not sure about the controls and what the length will be. Anyway, each time when Doc takes a step onto a new pill, the previous one behind him falls down and disappears at a certain height (if Doc's too high up), or once it hits the ground. If an opponent is under a falling pill and gets hit, they will receive more damage and knockback. Should opponents be able to use the staircase as a platform as well?

I think it's hard to explain without a visual, but I hope you get the idea.

Also...

^ Interesting idea but how would that work when he's in the air?
I was thinking that it would work the same in the air. Doc would just create a floating staircase, walking up it as the pills behind him fall down, until they hit a player or the ground. Though, the pills don't really need to fall. I guess just stacking them into a staircase is good enough to mimic the gameplay of Dr. mario a little.

But that's the only idea I have for a recovery move right now...unless if equipment is involved. Like I was thinking something similar to G&W or Sonic where Doc bounces on a simple stretcher (which two characters hold like in G&W's B^. Who those characters are, I dunno lol).
