Welp, time to ride this bandwagon.

:ultvillager: Huh. Did NOT see that coming.
:ultmegaman: Didn't realize how popular he actually is.
:ultwiifittrainer:Laughing uncontrollably
:ultrosalina:Yay, Galaxy's being acknowledged!
:ultlittlemac:Well, there's our first Assist Trophy!
:ultgreninja:Not Mewtwo, but I'll gladly take it!
:ultbrawler::ultswordfighter::ultgunner: That's an interesting way to do the Miis!
:ultpalutena: Well, WiiDude's gonna be happy about this.
:ultpacman: Didn't see that one coming, either!
:ultlucina::ultrobin:Cool, a mage! So... what's gonna happen with Chrom's supporters?
:ultshulk: Chugga's happy, so I'm happy. Looks cool, too.
:ultdarkpit: Time to see why this guy is hated. Proceeds to main him with zeal
:ultbowserjr:New Mario villain, bois!
:ultduckhunt:This moveset is kinda rad. Spamming the side taunt is great, too.
:ultryu: Spoiled it for myself, but still, really cool. I loved his fighting game inputs.
:ultcloud:Wow, he is WAY more popular than I thought.
:ultcorrin::ultcorrinf:The controversy leading up to their release got me into Fire Emblem through Awakening, so thanks!
:ultbayonetta:Congratulations to all the voters, and thank you! She's fun!

:ultinkling::ultinklingboy: Called it from a mile away.
:ultdaisy: Thank you for saving the clones from the hate wagon.
:ultridley:Did NOT call it whatsoever. Finally, the meme wars are over!
:ultsimon::ultrichter: Y'know, I always knew this was a popular franchise. Surprised it was only now represented.
:ultchrom: He got his chance another day!
:ultdarksamus: Metroid fans are eating good this game!
:ultkrool: And the "Sakurai hates the west" stigma suffers another critical blow!
:ultisabelle: Awwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww
:ultken: This was an inevitability, wasn't it?
:ultincineroar:GRINCH DEAD, STOP FIGHTING NOW
:ultpiranha:Laughing hysterically
:ultjoker:Never saw THAT one coming!
:ulthero::ulthero3::ulthero4::ulthero2: Upon further research, they've been long, LONG overdue.
:ultbanjokazooie: And the earlier-mentioned stigma is deader than dead.
:ult_terry:I spent 3 streams on Twitch learning about this character's history. Pretty awesome, man. Pretty awesome.
:ultbyleth:The start of my fascination with salty fans and their petty complaints
:ultminminWell, I guess the Assist Trophy rule still has legs. Still fun though, but the MegaWatt's busted.
:ultsteve: No joke, I spent the entire day after the reveal giggling like an idiot
:ultsephiroth:Please help me, I can't stop listening to One-Winged Angel (New Main, BTW)
:ultpyra: Well, Emile is EXTREMELY happy now!

Honestly, who cares what the large majority of the Smash fanbase thinks? If it were up to them, Steve wouldn't exist and Geno would've gotten in over Sephiroth.

I'd rather talk with four or five people who genuinely like the same characters as me than talk with hundreds of people who'd likely criticize me for insinuating that I'd be more happy with another first-party than whatever third-party they're convinced is entitled to get in.

To some people, the Sephiroth Mii costume showcase was the most important one, in regards to speculation.

To me, it's this one. What Miis we get will be important, but it's the Miis that we don't get that'll be impactful.

Nothing 100% confirmed, of course, there's still 2 characters to go, but it'll definitely be something to watch going forward.

So I just had a long day at work, working an extra five hours over my shift, not getting home until essentially midnight. I'm tired and achy, and yet here it is almost 3AM and I can't sleep. So, I figured I would type something up here because I got some information earlier today that seems to have flown under the radar by Smash fans at large for some reason. However, since I am tired, I'm not up for looking around for the sources for the things I'm going to mention, at least not at this time. If someone wants me to source some of the things I'm about to mention about President Furakawa later on, just quote me or whatever so I can see it and if someone else doesn't get to it before me than I will get to it.

First off, I would just like to briefly go over something I brought up but didn't get to fully respond to in the RTC Thread, and that was that Pyra and Mythra being in and Rex being reduced to taunts and final smashes while having a Mii Costume doesn't actually mean costumes deconfirm, but actually means the opposite. As someone who thought Rex had little chance because his costume was stuck behind a $25 paywall, even though I have no attachment to Xeno-anything I was very pleased to see this happen because it actually kills another fan rule unless Sakurai comes out to say otherwise in the next presentation.

The reason this is the case is because excluding Rex is clearly just a design choice and has nothing to do with the costume at all. I spoke at length with a friend who loves Xeno-stuff and from what I gathered, Rex really isn't anything special without his Blades and all his really cool stuff comes from them, which means other than specials Rex would likely play similar to Shulk. In addition, Rex's English voice, his general character, and the fact that he suffers that fate of many a male protagonist in which the other characters around him are more popular makes it so he isn't the best choice to pick.

You have two cute/sexy waifus who are central characters who are already setup in the story to swap between one another, who can theoretically do anything Rex could, they are both more popular than Rex, this meets the small outcry for more female characters, and allows you to make two characters in one with major differences instead of a stance-switching character. In addition, they made a model for Rex, which alone is proof that they could have made it just Rex with a Blade if they wanted to, but they went with the more popular choice. This is very similar to Spring Man, who despite being see as the main character of the game and was at the front of the list when Sakurai went to negotiate was skipped over not because of his Assist Trophy, but because of the creator's desire for another character and a scapegoat reason to pick the most popular character from ARMS which of course is Min Min.

Now Sakurai could come out and say it was because they already made a costume, which I doubt will be the case, but if so I will address that then and there. I will also criticize such a mindset as well, so be ready for that.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

As for the information I gained, apparently not all that long ago Nintendo had another meeting, and in that meeting President Furakawa stated that the majority of their big sales money came from Animal Crossing, Sword and Shield DLC Passes (gross), and Fighter's Pass 2. It's specifically stated that they made bank after Steve's reveal (no surprise there) and that it made up like 60% of their profits or something like that. Regardless of the specifics, Nintendo has found out that you can make bank off of DLC because it takes less resources to develop and people are more eager to buy expansions of their old games than new ones.

Furakawa states that they plan to expand in the area of DLC more into the future. I've stated this MANY times in the Geno Thread, but other games like Tekken 7, Street Fighter 5, Dragon Ball FighterZ, Samurai Showdown, Soul Calibur 6 and others have proven the success of wave after wave of DLC and I called that Nintendo finally got a taste of that with FP 1 and that FP 2 both sold well upon reveal and after Steve, so if you think that the DLC for Smash is TRULY over after this pass than you are a silly goose. Considering all the information we've heard over the past couple years, it's likely we've already heard some of the picks for another pass and are expecting them to show up here when they are destined for later. Pyra and Mythra seal the deal as far as I'm concerned: this is a pick that people REALLY wanted shortly after Ultimate's reveal in 2018 but Sakurai couldn't make it happen until 2021. Considering all the solid evidence for many characters and how there is still a good chuck of long-time fan demands, this wild ride ain't over yet.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hey, you guys remember that one FAmitsu article of Sakurai's that suggested that all the DLC was chosen in close to one go, as in all 11 were negotiated for in more of a group instead of doing Pass 1 than Pass 2? Pyra and Mythra support this being the case heavily, as they would have been heavily on Sakurai's mind at the time due to fan demand being very high then. In addition, did you know that everyone quoting Sakurai to say 'this is the end of the DLC' is from his Min Min Famitsu interview...which is long before Steve's reveal and release which made bank...

It made bank, but at this point, it's silly to try to say one way or another that DLC will continue after FP2.

Is it an extremely profitable endeavor? Yes, absolutely.

Do we have any way of knowing it'll happen? Nope, not at all.

I'd rather live in the moment and enjoy what I current have and am receiving than trying to look into a crystal ball and predict what's probably a year out. We still got 2 characters to debate aimlessly for months on right now as is.

I just wanna point out that that one cringy Twitter post of a persona calling card is obviously taking a piss, and its annoying to see ppl go "man those darn geno fans, always so ungrateful" like it should be pretty obvious that they are just going for clicks by mentioning a controversial character like geno

I mean, I've given evidence to you both now and evidence to others many times before that every points to more DLC...but I mean, if you guys just want to assume it's over just like you all did LAST TIME I mentioned they would announce more DLC and they did, that's your prerogative.

I'm just trying to get you guys hype for what I deem to be inevitable, and I'm pretty sure everyone wants more characters.

Unless you are like that weird guy on Twitter I found who thinks more characters is bad and there should be only non-character DLC from now one because people fight to much about it and it causes too much stress. Worst take of 2021 yet imo.

implying Geno would have been a bad choice by any stretch of the imagination

I will say that I'm happy Sephy got in as I have a new love for FF7 over this past year and would have been hyped even if I didn't because he's KINDA a big deal, but c'mon, the Puppet Hate Train (PHT Express) is old and gone and the new hip is to root for cool characters regardless of what you think their chances are and what you want personally.

Then again, your pfp IS of the lowest-effort main Pokemon title to date, so I suppose you could just have bad taste.

We're already hype, when they announce more DLC, that's when we'll get excited.

I'd rather get excited as all hell for something that's 100% guaranteed, then get excited over something that may or may not happen.

Do I think a FP3 could happen? Sure, of course I do, but until I hear "More characters are in development", I choose to hype responsibly. I have 2 more unknowns at the moment to get excited for, and regardless, we wouldn't start seeing FP3 characters until either late this year, or early next anyway.

Unrelated but I have a hunch we might get Sol revealed in the next two packs. Yes yes it's bias because Strive is releasing in two months but I do think that Kunio spirit event might be bread crumbs for more cooperation with ArcSys to get a fighter. I'm not super confident because Hayabusa is in the same status where we have Fatal Frame content in the base game but still no fighter from Koei Tecmo. Hopefully we get both of them. Hayabusa and Sol are awesome as hell and their moveset potential is off the roof.

Plus fire theory implies we'll get two fighters that can use fire in their moveset and these two fit that :troll:

I kinda feel he has a decent shot after months of thinking the opposite. But it's probably because of Strive's beta and how everyone is talking about it, to be fair.

And talking about that, Guilty Gear Strive is generating quite the talk I'd say. A lot of FGC personalities are almost playing the game 24/7 and I've seen more Smash fans mentioning the series. This obviously doesn't have any bearing for Smash DLC, but if Sol happened to be in one of the remaining two slots I think there would be more Smash fans enjoying his inclusion than I'd normally expect.

The game is having very good reception, in part because of the netcode. I actually believe that if there's a third pass that could be Sol's best shot.

I think Kazuma Kiryu could be FP10 or 11 tbh. At this point I’m willing to place my bets on the characters that seem viable yet are not often in the conversation, since Nintendo is being so unpredictable.
I'm not feeling him but I'd love to be proven wrong.

This song would be a perfect for his trailer reveal, though they would probably just do their own remix of Receive You:

This is actually kinda wholesome, we need someone with an opinion like this everyday.
Aw thank you! In my mind every character makes someone happy, so I have a hard time feeling as though any character is bad. Of course I do like some characters more than others (seriously what the heck has FP2 been so far omg) but characters I don’t really care about (like Banjo for instance) definitely have their fans and I’m very happy that they are in!

I hate SwSh as much as anyone, but there’s no need for this lol

The best thing about Receive You is it comes in so many flavors, whatever the tone of the trailer Sakurai was going for, there will be a good version to use.

I choose to hype responsibly.
Jesus christ, again with this schtick?

Ever since PushDustin made that stupid tweet everyone thinks they have to 'hype responsibly'.

Whenever I see this, it just SCREAMS people who can't handle disappointment.

I get super-hype all the time about things that are not concrete. If I'm right, I get MORE hype, and if I'm wrong I just kinda shrug it off. You shouldn't let some sort of high-horse style of morality force you to live a certain way. Also, I have YET to see a single person who has adopted this mantra not be condescending to others when they do get disappointed. Not judging you of course, you could easily be different, but I have yet to see it personally out of many people thus far.

I hate SwSh as much as anyone, but there’s no need for this lol
Yeah, it was low hang fruit to be sure, but the lowest-hanging fruit is the easiest to reach and thus the most tempting to snatch.

Plus, if you don't make jabs at people in your circle occasionally, are you really living?

Also YOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO waddup Heoj Heoj long time no see! I see you still have your hat, have you given up or are you still chugging along as well? What do you think about who may be next or the topic of more DLC?

Thank you for this information, while I would prefer to have a source I understand if you’re not up to get it. Quite interesting that Steve apparently made that much bank, although I suppose it is to be expected.

I hype responsibly regardless of PushDustin's tweet. I'm a 30 year old man with the soul of a 80 year old, I'm not a jumping up and down all over the wall kid anymore. I enjoy to let things take me by surprise instead of non-stop energy, I'm too tired for that lifestyle anymore. If surprises happen, awesome, cool. If they don't? It's whatever.

If we get more after FP2, then great, I'm happy for it.

If we don't? Well, alright, I'm already very content with the roster, so I can't complain either.

Smash 4
:ultvillager:: Who is he?
:ultmegaman:: Ah, one of Capcom's most iconic characters is in Smash.
:ultwiifittrainer:: I wasn't expecting her to get in.
:ultrosalina:: I kind of feel bad for the Daisy and Waluigi fans, but hey she's cool!
:ultlittlemac:: So, Assist Trophies can be fighters?
:ultgreninja:: Mmm... froggy.
:ultmiifighters:: Yay, custom characters!
:ultpalutena:: I remember her back in Brawl before she was a fighter!
:ultpacman:: They invited Pac-Man!? That cherry-chasing dot-muncher deserves to be in this roster!
:ultlucina::ultrobin:: Yay, more anime sword fighters.
:ultshulk:: Who is that guy?
:ultdarkpit:: Another Pit? Not bad.
:ultbowserjr:: Bowser's son!? I wasn't expecting that!?
:ultduckhunt:: I'm gonna love playing as this annoying mutt and his bird!

Smash 4's DLC
:ultryu:: They put in Street Fighter? Nice!
:ultcloud:: Don't know who is he?
:ultcorrin:: And thus, more fuel was added to the fire.
:ultbayonetta:: Don't know who is that woman in black?

Ultimate
:ultinkling:: Was expecting them to be in Smash.
:ultdaisy:: At least fans of Daisy were happy.
:ultridley:: SAKURAI! YOU MAD LAD! YOU FINALLY PUT HIM IN!!!

:ultdarksamus:: Yay, another 3rd Samus.
:ultchrom:: Aren't we getting too many of those Fire Emblem reps?
:ultkrool:: YES! MY THICC CROC BOI IS FINALLY IN SMASH!
:ultisabelle:: I didn't know she was gonna fight on the battlefield.
:ultken:: Good old Ken, one of the most iconic Street Fighter characters.
:ultincineroar:: That stupid Grinch leak was fake all along, pretty much why I don't trust them. (I loved this big tiger!)
:ultpiranha:: LMAO THEY PUT A FRIGGING PLANT IN SMASH!? HAHA I LOVE THIS!

Fighter Pass 1 & 2

:ultjoker:: Someone from a Persona game? He looks neat.
:ulthero:: Another sword fighter again? Oh cool he has RPG!
:ultbanjokazooie:: Finally... the time has come... BEAR AND BIRD ARE HOME!
:ult_terry:: Who is that? Never heard of him.
:ultbyleth:: For f***'s sake. please kill me... why... why did we get another one... I want to die.
:ultminmin: Wasn't she a Spirit? Wait... DOES THAT MEAN MY BOY BANDANA DEE HAS A CHANCE!?
:ultsteve:: WHAT!? FREAKING STEVE FROM MINECRAFT!?
:ultsephiroth:: He looks pretty cool, I like him.
:ultpyra:/Mythra: Booba.

Several things are wrong here. There are a ton of things Rex can do without Pyra and Mythra, but even sticking with the Aegis Sword only as a weapon his driver arts are completely different from Mythra's in Torna.
Pyra and Mythra share normals and have different special attacks (and possibly a unique gimmick for each form), making them very much a stance character.
They didn't make a model for Rex and for that matter they most likely didn't make a model for any of the characters (Pyra and Mythra included), instead heavily reusing from the original game with some changes, much like Min Min did. Especially noticeable compared to Shulk who actually uses a model created wholly for Smash.

Also that awkward moment when you realize a good chunk of smash fans actually thought Rex would come alone and not with Pyra and Mythra and that people used Rex as shorthand because "Rex and Pyra and Mythra" is kind of a long name.

New theory: Funnyman theory. If local internet Funnyman Alpharad wants a character, and that character is not named Lyn, they get in.

He wants Bayonetta, we get Bayonetta. He wants Joker Persona 5, we get Joker Persona 5. He wants Today, we get Sephiroth who's kinda in the same ballpark. He wants Pyra/Mythra, we get Pyra/Mythra.
There's also the Chugaaconroy Let's Play theory! :4pacman:

Stuff like Toon Link, ATs being able to be disabled, and Bomberman is why I think mii costumes (at least basegame if costing extra money is an issue) and ATs don’t necessarily disconfirm. Could be Pyra and Mythra were chosen due to being seen to be just as good as XC2 representation (likely similar case with Min Min + the director’s wishes) and maybe Sakurai saw a more interesting moveset with them alone instead of being a team with Rex, but still wanted to include Rex in the form of taunts + Final Smash.

Of course more promotions probably aren’t happening anyway.

I really can’t see Nintendo having an issue with roles overlapping if spirits (still count as a sort of role) and a mii costume that’s identical to an AT are okay.
Honestly? If Sakurai once again fails to mention upgrades as the reason he skipped a character, like he did with Spring Man, I'm throwing that theory down the trash officially.

By this point, it's probably a lot more likely that Min Min and P/M were chosen for gameplay and popularity reasons rather than as replacements for other characters because they were AT'd or Mii'd.

Regarding my Personal reactions

I honestly don't get hype for Newcomers that much. I get hype for New Smash reveals, but usually not the characters themselves. Good amount of the time I've gotten more hype for These Premium Costumes than characters at one point

Discounting everyone is here, Sephiroth was the only character in Smash Ultimate I legit popped off at (I still haven't uploaded the reaction till this day, yes). I also popped off at the Sans Costume, Enderman Alt, and Bomberman Mii costume. I would have also popped off at Cuphead if I didn't get spoiled on his inclusion. I also was really excited about the type of moves Hero had, those were pretty cool

During Smash 4, Cloud, and Maybe Bayonetta, were the only time I was really excited for the character themselves. I would have been Excited at Little Mac, but I got spoiled on him as well.

--------------------------------------

Fighter Pass 2 Finishing way earlier than people might expect makes some lick of sense

Once they get the ball rolling on releasing the characters, Characters start coming out more quickly. It takes quite awhile at the start because everything related to the characters need to be started, including the Art, Modeling, Moveset conception, Composition, Animating, etc

The thing is that different groups of people work on each different aspect, and they probably don't start until they are done with everything, in which they are left of the payroll since I imagine most of the employees working on smash are contracted people from Namco and other places. So I bet people doing the Renders and Art probably finish early, Composition might finish early, etc. When the Programmers were working on Steve, Modelers and animatiors might have already been working on Sephiroth, Pyra/Mythra, and perhaps the Last 2 Fighters as well

So while the wait for Min-Min and Steve were long, As people are finishing their complete duties, whether it be for Art, Composition, Modeling, Animating, etc, Progress will start piling up in a postive direction in terms of Speed, and that's how we get the fast reveal and Release of Sephiroth, and kind of the same thing with Pyra and Mythra

----------------------------------------

Also Development seems to be winding down for now. I remember Sakurai had that post where he said Pics of the days will start winding down because there isn't as much. While FP2 has sold Lots of money and they could easily go for a FP3, I could see a situation where just doing a FP3 might not be the most economic decision for Nintendo. Perhaps they have other ideas to expand on the Future of Smash where it would be more beneficial, but personally I don't expect FP3

I had actually completely forgotten Sakurai mentioning that Pic of the Day was coming to an end in the near-ish future, tbh.

Because unga bunga new character bad, old character good but only if it's from a game I like. Oh and I didn't really have much of an opinion before the ballot came out.

What? This is the dumbest character reveal ever! Who unironically wants and expected Sgt. Cortez in the game? What a stupid reveal. Dumb character. He comes from a dead series that no one plays. Wow so cool Sakurai! You really are so unpredictable with this literal who! He is dirt to me. Less than dirt. So much for getting characters that people actually want. Whoever wanted this character really needs to get their head checked. Like there is probably one guy out there who goes onto message boards and yells "Time to split" and posts a gif of him everytime he mentions him and nobody finds him hilarious at all. What a wasted character slot. This game truly is dead.

I don't recall that? All I remember on the topic of the Pics of the Day is that he would stop posting them on weekends.
He said that PotD would be slowing down and that he still had more than 100 left, but the pace would be definitely slowed.

There was a problem fetching the tweet

It seems like he has a stock of these at his disposal, but the stock is starting to run dry, so he's spacing them out better until he's out. What I don't get is simply "Why couldn't he take more?", but he seems to show actual concern about making this bunch last, so, make of that what you will.

Like, the obvious solution is "Take more pics"

But he's coming at this like "When I run out, I have no more to show you."

Like, I'm definitely not counting out a 3rd Pass, no, but this is strange, if nothing else.

Ah, I must have missed that, thank you. Well, we should consider that the purpose of these images was originally purely to raise morale for the team, so either development truly is ending, or the team doesn't really feel like taking more instead of working on the game? I suppose there's no way of knowing. It seems odd that these would probably be ending before development ends if the former is true though.

EDIT: Apparently Sakurai mentioned that he can't post images mid-development on Twitter, so it appears it's less "they aren't happening anymore" and more "I can't put them on Twitter anymore", which seems like it wouldn't be an indication of anything more tbh

TBH the pic of the day thing is something he only really started doing at the end of 2019, the period from Joker to Terry (so late 2018 to late 2019) didn't have them. So maybe if FP3 does happen we'll just go back to that.

Hell, we went through the entirety of Smash 4's DLC cycle with no daily updates from Sakurai.

Eh, considering he said this at the end of December, and is skipping weekends and holidays, these'll at the very least continue until we see CP11. He said he has "Over 100" left, and there are 104 weekend days in a year, which we probably won't even need since the 2nd FP will probably be done by the latest like... September or October?

So I just finished watching Alpharad gush about getting his two absolute most-wanted dream picks as DLC and...hey, that's really cool. Good for him and all that. And while I personally got two of my biggest dream picks in the form of Simon and B&K, I'll admit, watching it got me a teensy bit bummed out that there's no way in hell that the last two characters will get me feeling anything close. Super selfish, I know, but I'd love to at least experience that rush one more time before Ultimate wraps up for good, y'know?

And it got me wondering, just out of personal curiosity and general interest in everyone in this thread: Who's the one character that would get you popping off if they were the last DLC announcement? Your dream character, the one you've always had in the back of your head whenever a new Smash reveal was on the horizon, even if you had to talk yourself down because you knew how improbable it was?

For me, that's Shantae. She's 100% not getting into Ultimate, but I've spent countless hours imagining her moveset, taunts, alt colors, Spirits, music tracks, Mii costumes, Classic Mode route, Final Smash, all of it. Just seeing her make a Sakurai-designed jump from 2D sprites to full 3D render would completely blow my mind. And this isn't me just bandwagoning, I've been daydreaming of that since before I even knew that this site existed haha.

Other characters would definitely still excite me (Neku Sakuraba and Leon Kennedy may be out of the running, and Eggman is all but deconfirmed by Pollock, but Amaterasu still has a...slim-but-still-existing chance), but if we're talking Banjo-Kazooie-levels of unbridled joy, none of them would match seeing Shantae get that Smash invite.

View attachment 304482

What about you guys?
Any combination of Crash, Eggman, Amaterasu or Rayman would be amazing. It's quite incredible that I'm now down to only 4 characters that would hype me up. Everyone else has either been deconfirmed through assist trophies (Skull Kid and Shadow) or has been added (K.Rool, Ridley, Banjo and Pyra/Mythra). I'm at the point where even if none of my remaining characters make it I'll still be happy with what I've got.
