Sora does originate from a video game.List of rules for Smash eligibility:
1. The character must originate from a video game.
Oh, no no no! I’ve been here many years under another username, but the email attached to that name is no more. I was SuperSmashStephen.Thinking about how we STILL don't know who did it.
I know, right?
Oh, by the way, I see this is your first day here, so welcome to Smashboards. Try not to lose your sanity too much.
Gatekeeping is not my intention. I'm just thinking from Nintendo's point of view, not to mention it's yet to be proven wrong and I don't see why that will change now. I use a lot of objective logic in my speculation to try and contain my personal biases haha.I get the variety argument.
I just don't get why people don't realize that companies can have diversity in their IPs that would justify a double dip.
You can't say Minecraft and Halo are even remotely similar, yet both are owned by Microsoft.
I feel like "companies get one per pass" is just gatekeeping logic to try and limit options/reduce madness... and it failed because we still talk about them
True! Luckily for all parties involved I never said he didn't.Sora does originate from a video game.
Except the logic has already been proven wrong with Banjo and Steve.Gatekeeping is not my intention. Despite being owned by a company who's mascot is a pants wearing mouse.Sora does originate from a video game.
Three RPG characters for Pass 1 is fair, but two of the same company for Pass 2 is suddenly too much?I don't think Nintendo when looking at 3rd party choices is like "Hmm, already picked a character from this company in this pass. Can't pick another because it's not fair!"
Sorry, jumped the gun with your post being so close to mine. My apologies.True! Luckily for all parties involved I never said he didn't.
It's okay, I've made worse blunders in my time here.Sorry, jumped the gun with your post being so close to mine. My apologies.
As far as I understand it, Steve was at the start of the talks with Banjo swooping in after the demand from the Ballot grew significant enough. Banjo came out first because he took less time to negotiate and develop, and Steve probably would have fallen through had Pass 2 not saved him. I think the girth of the two franchises played a part as well- one is a beloved but dormant series while the other is the best selling video game ever and a worldwide cultural phenomenon. Yes, they did discuss two at once, and no I didn't mean that Nintendo laser-focuses on one. I imagine they view the company's portfolio and toss ideas back & forth till things go further.Except the logic has already been proven wrong with Banjo and Steve.
If ex-Mojang exmployees are to be believed, Steve in Smash has been a subject of discussion for Nintendo since 2015. And yet, before actually getting him, we got Banjo in Smash, meaning there was a period of time where Nintendo and Microsoft were negotiating about not one but two characters simultaneously.
If we really had the logic of "Nintendo laser focuses on one character at a time per company", we would have never gotten Banjo.
Who better to collaborate with than a company whose mascot is an Italian plumber who fights a giant fire breathing turtle to save his princess girlfriend. Sometimes with help from his ghostbuster younger brother and a dinosaur that wears sneakers!Despite being owned by a company who's mascot is a pants wearing mouse.
You should be counting Geno out not because any company rules stuff, but because he was already added as a Mii costume in this very pass. The whole "one 3rd party company rep per pass" thing is probably something the community just kind of decided "that's how it works" on.
Even so, I'm still gonna say "that's how it works" since that's how I've understood it for quite a while now, and we're only 3 days away so it's unlikely to cause problems. If it turns out to be wrong then it'll be a fun surprise, but at present, I'd consider the likes of Master Cheif, Neku, Geno, or a Tales character to be disconfrimed until proven otherwise.
I'm still surprised they decided to drop the presentation this upcoming week, the week of Dread. Usually, they only do 1 big thing per week.New Metroid Dread commercial.
"Big bird spoilers his way to Smash!"I'm still surprised they decided to drop the presentation this week, the upcoming week of Dread. Usually, they only do 1 big thing per week.
It's because Steve was an absurdly ambitious project.Again, shouldn't Steve have been in Pass 1 alongside Banjo, if there's no "no double dipping in the same devcycle" rule? Because taking too long to make wasn't why he was held back until Pass 2 since he started development in March 2020.
Maybe. But it's also possible he wasn't on the table during the construction of Pass 1 and they only returned to him when they decided to add more characters. It's because Steve was an absurdly ambitious project.
I mean they had to rework every single ****ing stage in the game, even though not normally playable in versus modes, just for his B button to work properly.
It's not a "no double dipping" scenario here. Steve was just too ambitious for Sakurai to wrap his head around until Pass 2.

More like...Sephiroth does indeed bring despair even in Smash.

I hadn’t played FF7 prior to Sephiroth’s reveal, but when I saw the sheer amount of people who immediately recognized One Winged Angel literally three notes in, I pretty much immediately hyped myself up. Then I played FF7 on Switch some weeks after, and now I know why he’s so beloved. He’s become a personal favorite fighter of mine. It's officially October 2nd.
