List of rules for Smash eligibility:
1. The character must originate from a video game.
Sora does originate from a video game.

Thinking about how we STILL don't know who did it.

I know, right?

Oh, by the way, I see this is your first day here, so welcome to Smashboards. Try not to lose your sanity too much. :4pacman:
Oh, no no no! I’ve been here many years under another username, but the email attached to that name is no more. I was SuperSmashStephen.

Thank you for the welcome though, and the return to madness.

I get the variety argument.

I just don't get why people don't realize that companies can have diversity in their IPs that would justify a double dip.

You can't say Minecraft and Halo are even remotely similar, yet both are owned by Microsoft.

I feel like "companies get one per pass" is just gatekeeping logic to try and limit options/reduce madness... and it failed because we still talk about them :4pacman:
Gatekeeping is not my intention. I'm just thinking from Nintendo's point of view, not to mention it's yet to be proven wrong and I don't see why that will change now. I use a lot of objective logic in my speculation to try and contain my personal biases haha.

Except the logic has already been proven wrong with Banjo and Steve.

If ex-Mojang exmployees are to be believed, Steve in Smash has been a subject of discussion for Nintendo since 2015. And yet, before actually getting him, we got Banjo in Smash, meaning there was a period of time where Nintendo and Microsoft were negotiating about not one but two characters simultaneously.

If Nintendo really had the logic of laser-focusing on one character at a time per company, we would have never gotten Banjo.

I don't think Nintendo when looking at 3rd party choices is like "Hmm, already picked a character from this company in this pass. Can't pick another because it's not fair!"
Three RPG characters for Pass 1 is fair, but two of the same company for Pass 2 is suddenly too much?

Like, the logic makes no sense.

As far as I understand it, Steve was at the start of the talks with Banjo swooping in after the demand from the Ballot grew significant enough. Banjo came out first because he took less time to negotiate and develop, and Steve probably would have fallen through had Pass 2 not saved him. I think the girth of the two franchises played a part as well- one is a beloved but dormant series while the other is the best selling video game ever and a worldwide cultural phenomenon. Yes, they did discuss two at once, and no I didn't mean that Nintendo laser-focuses on one. I imagine they view the company's portfolio and toss ideas back & forth till things go further.

What I was saying is that Banjo and Steve still occurred in separate passes, not the same one which holds true for Hero and Sephiroth as well. Again I'm not "gatekeeping" so much as I'm going off of the facts before us to make a logical conclusion. I could absolutely be proven wrong on Tuesday and I frankly won't care if I am, I just find this fun to talk about.

The whole "one 3rd party company rep per pass" thing is probably something the community just kind of decided "that's how it works" on.

Even so, I'm still gonna say "that's how it works" since that's how I've understood it for quite a while now, and we're only 3 days away so it's unlikely to cause problems. If it turns out to be wrong then it'll be a fun surprise, but at present, I'd consider the likes of Master Cheif, Neku, Geno, or a Tales character to be disconfrimed until proven otherwise.

Again, shouldn't Steve have been in Pass 1 alongside Banjo, if there's no "no double dipping in the same devcycle" rule? Because taking too long to make wasn't why he was held back until Pass 2 since he started development in March 2020.

Despite being owned by a company who's mascot is a pants wearing mouse.
Who better to collaborate with than a company whose mascot is an Italian plumber who fights a giant fire breathing turtle to save his princess girlfriend. Sometimes with help from his ghostbuster younger brother and a dinosaur that wears sneakers! 😂

While I agree that multiple characters from the same company can coexist, theoretically even in the same pass, it is also the case that at some points during that five years negotiations or progress on Steve must have been suspended or reached an impasse, potentially for a long period of time, and it's possible that in that time they pursued Banjo, only to later return to move ahead with Steve.

It's possible there was no overlap between the two save for right at the end, and when Banjo was being attended do, Steve's situation had completely halted.

Of course the opposite is also possible, but it's tricky jumping to conclusions with only partial information.

You should be counting Geno out not because any company rules stuff, but because he was already added as a Mii costume in this very pass.

It's because Steve was an absurdly ambitious project.

I mean they had to rework every single ****ing stage in the game, even though not normally playable in versus modes, just for his B button to work properly.

It's not a "no double dipping" scenario here. Steve was just too ambitious for Sakurai to wrap his head around until Pass 2.

I honestly hope they go all out with mii costumes for this character. The most a character has had come with them is 6 IIRC so I hope we get that number here. Ultimate is gonna be the last smash game for a long time after this, and almost definitely the last smash game of it's kind too, meaning a lot of combinations just won't be possible without a game with the same scope as Ultimate, so dropping a bunch of costumes that are lower effort for some of the more frequently requested characters would be great. Obviously it definitely won't be Crashter Chief or Sora combinations, but just have it more focused around filling those gaps. I guess Kazuya's wave did this, but say we do get 6, it should be on a slightly larger scale (and we won't have any that'll return from smash 4 unless they make you pay for the red shell hat). This could be seen as trying to request the smash team to drop a figurative nuclear bomb onto the community, but people aren't wrong when they say Mii costumes are really just bonuses.

Characters themselves obviously take way more effort to make so expecting all your big named requests to get in is ridiculous, but the miis were marketed as the way to get in those characters during smash 4. This is the last update and it's been confirmed that this is the last mii wave too so I hope we can go out with a bang (not the fanbase) in regards to mii costumes. Maybe by some miracle that the realization upon this being the last character would prompt people to remember that they could only ever get a mii costume or not be in the game at all and be grateful for that, but unlikely considering that the fandom does seem to forget that Nintendo don't pick characters based on what companion they can bring with them to the smash mural or intend to deconfirm them for the sake of speculation. It really isn't as simple as what random 4chan posts or YT vids would lead people to believe. Still, I guess some good can be pulled from the fact that the ones who do look at the bigger picture will unobjectively view Ultimate's mere existence as almost that of a miracle.

Maybe. But it's also possible he wasn't on the table during the construction of Pass 1 and they only returned to him when they decided to add more characters.

We can't fill the gaps in our knowledge with conclusions, only guesses.

It's officially October 2nd.

Just 3 days to go.

That said we talk about one of gaming's most iconic and recognizable villains none other than.

Sephiroth!
ERMAGERD ANOTHER FILTHY ANIME SWORDSMAN WHO ISN'T RELEVANT BECAUSE ANIME IS TRASH!!!!

....is what I'd say if I had no culture because Sephiroth is too damn iconic to not be hype. Be honest, I baited you, didn't I? :V

Even though most of my Sephiroth experience is from Kingdom Hearts, the moment the first music cue started I said what the F?

Genuinely from a straight up Oh my God standpoint Sephiroth takes the cake as the GOAT trailer. With others you kinda had an idea before the title card reveal, but with Sephiroth you don't know what is going on until you get punched in the face with the immediate music recognition.

I hadn’t played FF7 prior to Sephiroth’s reveal, but when I saw the sheer amount of people who immediately recognized One Winged Angel literally three notes in, I pretty much immediately hyped myself up. Then I played FF7 on Switch some weeks after, and now I know why he’s so beloved. He’s become a personal favorite fighter of mine.

Sephiroth's reveal was super hype. Awesome music, awesome trailer. The character is okay play-wise, but I do like the whole boss rush classic he gave.

I love playing as Sephiroth. I couldn’t believe it when he was announced. It, ironically, gave me the same feeling as when Cloud was announced during Smash 4’s DLC.

Lastly, HE DOESN’T KILL SORA’S CHANCES. 😭 Leaks and bias aside, fully expecting a Pokémon.

Sephiroth 100% had the best trailer, he's a real fun character to use, he brought actual Final Fantasy content to Ultimate, his stage is fun and the music is great. What's not to love about Sephiroth?

Also his trailer had Banjo and Kazooie in it, and that made me really happy to see the pair duking it out with a god in a CG trailer, especially since it conveyed their personality and dynamic really well in a like 2 second cameo, with Kazooie initially covering Banjo's face with her wing and looking shocked, then Banjo reacting afterwards.
