I don't think they have anything to do with each other.Personally, I see no timeline where we get Chun-Li, but not another Sonic character, so if Chun-Li is in, we getting either Eggman, Tails, Shadow, & Knuckles

Well they are the scariest characters in the game so that seems legit.Too late, I'm now imagining Great Fairies chasing Link in BotW2 to kill him out of his guilt for destroying fine pottery
Don't forget to put Kingdom Hearts under "Square Enix".Going off of this, I'm going to try and compile a list of each represented companies' biggest possible series. Please do review this list; I want to make sure it's accurate. Bold is already represented in the base game, italics are a maybe, strikethroughhas post-launch content. Fighters who got a DLC pack. are strikethrough'd and bolded, as are companies who got a pack in FP2 specifically. I'll take interviews and such into account later.

Though for Chun-li being scrapped for Ken, So far in Ultimate some series have gotten 1 Echo and 1 Unique newcomer (Mario, Castlevania, Fire Emblem, Metroid) so the same thing could happen to Street Fighter, though Ken might be considered more of an unique character though due to his changes, but Street fighter still has an unique slot if this pattern continues
Yes. A disappointing display, that.View attachment 299046

If they were considering adding Additional Reps to 3rd Parties, there's no way Sonic wasn't at least consideredI don't think they have anything to do with each other.
Yeah, but it's no Suikoden. That's even more characters than Chrono Cross I believe.
SNK could very easily get a Second Character if they wanted to, just with a Pack focusing more on Metal Slug or SamSho, you know?Going off of this, I'm going to try and compile a list of each represented companies' biggest possible series. I'm not disqualifying the worth of another Sonic character, or the legacy of the series in general...But Considering Street Fighter already got Ken (even if he is an echo) in this game, and they got a Boost in content with 36 Songs now (even if all from SF2), It would be weird if Street Fighter got another character in this game in FP2, Totaling to 2 New characters in the same game, while Sonic still gets none, especially since so many been requesting for some substantial update to the content
Bruh I'm the exact opposite. Sephiroth is the reason why I can't see another Sonic Character, and if we get another SEGA Character, it's probably Puyo Puyo, Sakura Wars, or maybe Monkey Ball considering the Revival Nick Robinson on YouTube Leaked. Why start at Chun-Li?
Personally, I see no timeline where we got Sephiroth, but not another Sonic character, so since Sephiroth is in, we getting either Eggman, Tails, Shadow, & Knuckles
Hypothetically yes, but with the tracks, Spirits, and costumes, I doubt it. SamSho especially; Nakoruru and Haohmaru got Spirited, with the former being Mii'd as well.SNK could very easily get a Second Character if they wanted to, just with a Pack focusing more on Metal Slug or SamSho, you know?
What's so "weird" about it? Plenty of series got two new characters (with one echo) in this game while others got none.It would be weird if Street Fighter got another character in this game in FP2, Totaling to 2 New characters in the same game, while Sonic still gets none, especially since so many been requesting for some substantial update to the content
I do feel it'd be odd if a third party's fighter count suddenly tripled, though. Even though he's an Echo, Ken's still a borderline-semiclone and a member of the Street Fighter trifecta alongside Ryu and Chun-Li. For Street Fighter to get it's three main characters when twelve-or-so other third-parties don't would feel rather odd. What's so "weird" about it? Plenty of series got two new characters (with one echo) in this game while others got none.
Castlevania got two characters whilst Sonic didn’t, despite Shadow being a viable Echo Fighter. What's so "weird" about it? Plenty of series got two new characters (with one echo) in this game while others got none.
It’d be no more odd than other Final Fantasy games getting practically nothing in terms of content.I do feel it'd be odd if a third party's fighter count suddenly tripled, though. To be fair Richter was a much straighter Echo, with Simon straight-up taking moves from him. Plus, they came at the same time, while Sonic was added back in Brawl; The deal was likely for both of them while Nintendo would need a second deal with Sega.Castlevania got two characters whilst Sonic didn’t, despite Shadow being a viable Echo Fighter.
By that logic it was "odd" for Fire Emblem to get 4 characters while plenty of other first parties didn't get all their main characters in Smash 4. Still happened regardless.I do feel it'd be odd if a third party's fighter count suddenly tripled, though. The way I see it, once any of those series has a character as noteworthy and significant as Chun-Li then by all means they could and should get that treatment.I do feel it'd be odd if a third party's fighter count suddenly tripled, though. That might be the case, but it doesn’t change how surprising it was. Most people thought that Sonic would be the first third-party franchise to get multiple characters. To be fair Richter was a much straighter Echo, with Simon straight-up taking moves from him. Plus, they came at the same time, while Sonic was added back in Brawl; The deal was likely for both of them while Nintendo would need a second deal with Sega.
FE's owned by Nintendo. I think the standards they're based on are a bit different. It was "odd" for Fire Emblem to get 4 characters while plenty of other first parties didn't get all their main characters in Smash 4. Still happened regardless.
Well I wouldn't say Sonic's Significance is overblown. While Sonic's Games have still been hit or miss (the 3D Ones anyway), he's still killing it when it comes to other forms of media, which is why you still see Kids getting into Sonic even to this dayI'm not disqualifying the worth of another Sonic character, or the legacy of the series in general...
But man the Smash community overblows the significance of Sonic. Probably explained by the natural bias toward cartoony platforming series, the audience here overlaps a lot more compared to traditional fighters - but Sonic isn't on some pedestal above other third parties that owes him anything that a series like Street Fighter isn't just as worthy of getting and can very well receive on its own merits completely independent from Sonic.
Sorry 7nator for highlighting you specifically but I see it all the time from a bunch of people and it's just draining. Chun-Li is a big deal, she doesn't have to wait for Eggman or Tails (also big deals, fwiw) to open the door for her. And no, Sephiroth isn't an exception just because FF7 had skim content. I doubt that was much of a concern at all, and that Sephiroth was added because... he's Sephiroth god dammit. It certainly helps but clinging onto exceptions and baseless assumptions like this is what ends up just throwing everyone for a loop when it's eventually proven wrong. It happens every time and I'm not going to buy into that anymore.
Street Fighter can get another character. So can Sonic. And those can both happen without the other.
Chun-Li could be cool, like REALLY Cool (especially if she brings in Mahvel Mechanics to set herself apart more from Ryu and Ken), I just don't see her getting in after Ken, especially since the 5chan Leak had some stuff in it relating to Chun-Li getting replaced with Ken.Chun Li's real competition is from various other notable Capcom characters. It could be that Sephiroth was a case where both Nintendo and SE saw him as the ideal addition but perhaps fulfill that role Monster Hunter or a Dante for their respective company.
I feel similarly, and it's hard to explain why. I think a big part of it is that Sonic always just feels like he's "there" in Smash and not much more. He has a fair bit of content but it doesn't feel particularly inspired or loving in the same way a lot of other series and characters do.With Sonic I sometimes wonder that, even with the relatively good relationship between Nintendo and Sega and the frequency of stuff like the Olympic crossovers, if Nintendo just doesn't have much interest in the game cast beyond him specifically. They have the big name for the novelty of him vs. Mario and perhaps have concluded the rest simply aren't a priority (maybe even assuming they have enough of that series fanbase playing already).
All just open speculation but I am curious.
Oh don't get me wrong, Sonic as a character is an absolute powerhouse and is a mascot legitimately comparable to Mario or Pac-Man. I just feel that people use this too often to try and saying like "Sonic DESERVES a new character over all the other third parties" which feels very dismissive of some of those other series and characters who may have just as much merit if not more in their own right.Well I wouldn't say Sonic's Significance is overblown. Chun-Li can't get in after Ken, because she was "replaced" with him in a rumor and she would be a third SF character, but we can get a third Castlevania character like Alucard even though Sakurai stated he replaced him with the Belmonts? (Not to mention we got only one SF newcomer in Ultimate while we got two Castlevania newcomers).Chun-Li could be cool, like REALLY Cool (especially if she brings in Mahvel Mechanics to set herself apart more from Ryu and Ken), I just don't see her getting in after Ken, especially since the 5chan Leak had some stuff in it relating to Chun-Li getting replaced with Ken.
You know what, if any Preexisting Third Party is getting a Full Blown Second Original Character, it's going to be Castlevania (Soma Cruz, Alucard, Trevor), or SNK (Metal Slug and SamSho). I'm that confident in us not getting a Second Sonic Character or Chun-Li after Sephiroth.
To be honest I think Castlevania and SNK are the least likely. They pretty much blew all the content on the base game and Terry's pack, respectively. There just isn't much new content that could be feasibly added. If Chun-Li's down because she was considered but replaced, so is Alucard.Chun-Li could be cool, like REALLY Cool (especially if she brings in Mahvel Mechanics to set herself apart more from Ryu and Ken), I just don't see her getting in after Ken, especially since the 5chan Leak had some stuff in it relating to Chun-Li getting replaced with Ken.

I must stress that the Tales Livestream Theory is not because of the anniversary, just the major streamed event that happens to line up with the next predicted DLC date. Heck, it's not even on the actual anniversary date; That was in December.Given the Tales livestream in March and also its 25th anniversary. My prediction for the next character is Yuri coming with the Lloyd Mii.
I think Chun-Li will be our E3 reveal. A throwback to Ryu's reveal and being the first and most iconic fighting game female warrants her such a reveal there.
Ah gotcha, thanks for the correction. Still predicting Yuri otherwise I could see the opposite with Chun-Li in March and him (Or Ryu Hayabusa) at E3 being Tales is a big series, one of the most popular JRPG and him the most popular Tales protagonist to the point he's left out of polls as he'd win them all.I'd must stress that the Tales Livestream Theory is not because of the anniversary, just the major streamed event that happens to line up with the next predicted DLC date. I'd also like to add that Lloyd is also the most popular Tales protagonist, just with the Smash fanbase (And arguably the general audience as well) instead of the Tales fanbase. The argument basically boils down to if you think Nintendo would appeal to the Smash fanbase or the Tales fanbase; I'm personally leaning towards the former, since that's Nintendo's game.Ah gotcha, thanks for the correction. But with the trend of returning Sm4sh Miis, I feel his chances honestly aren't too good now. I feel he and Monster Hunter are gonna return as Miis.I'd also like to add that Lloyd is also the most popular Tales protagonist, just with the Smash fanbase (And arguably the general audience as well) instead of the Tales fanbase. -Well at least with me, I don't try to word it in a way where Sonic derserves a 2nd Character over the others, and I'm not trying to dismiss the Merits of other FranchisesOh don't get me wrong, Sonic as a character is an absolute powerhouse and is a mascot legitimately comparable to Mario or Pac-Man. It doesn't help that, until recently, a lot of people were just saying "we want another Sonic rep" and didn't really back anyone in particular. It comes off as a bit disingenuous sometimes and motivated solely by the idea that Sonic is just important enough to get something. Which I agree with but more and more the suggestion of "new [insert series] rep" annoys me since it feels like missing the point of why characters should be added in the first place.
My theory that Yuri would be the Tales rep is because if it was Lloyd, I think either the Gil or Heihachi costume would have been saved for Lloyd. Alternatively the Lloyd Mii could just be saved for another Namco character or the company that develops Smash really is getting the shortest end of the stick. But with the trend of returning Sm4sh Miis, I feel his chances honestly aren't too good now. I feel he and Monster Hunter are gonna return as Miis.
Also, if that's the case, why again is Yuri left out of polls and not Lloyd?
Honestly, I can't say I find the returning Mii argument too solid. Lloyd's a popular request and would represent a big JRPG franchise, and Monster Hunter is a consistent moneymaker, especially after World. It feels rather shallow to just dismiss a character based on them having a Mii but then push someone from the same series. But with the trend of returning Sm4sh Miis, I feel his chances honestly aren't too good now. Because, Ken was already extremely unique, even by Echo Standards, Barely Qualifying as an Echo, getting Debated by the entire Smash Team on whether he should be counted as an Echo, not only that, but Capcom also has several other IP that I see getting in before Chun. Sorry Chun, I simply can't see you being Number Four. Sonic is also another Series I can see getting outprioritzed by another Series from SEGA, while Castlevania is Konami's Most Active IP, and has SEVERAL Characters who could bring in content based off of their own titles, and some of those NPCs, alongside some insanely unique ideas (Character Specific Abilities on After KO'ing an Opponent, Gliphs and MP, Character Swapping between a Mage and a Belmont, etc etc.). While SNK has a HUGE Budget Advantage for later on in the Pass. That and Metal Slug and SamSho could make for some very unique Challenger Packs. It's a Matter of Priorities at the end of the day, and I sincerely think that Sonic and Street Fighter simply have Competition too big to get a Non-Echo Newcomer now. That's my Reasoning and Logic my guy.Chun-Li can't get in after Ken, because she was "replaced" with him in a rumor and she would be a third SF character, but we can get a third Castlevania character like Alucard even though Sakurai stated he replaced him with the Belmonts? I think Nintendo's aiming more for profitability than uniqueness.Because, Ken was already extremely unique, even by Echo Standards, Barely Qualifying as an Echo, getting Debated by the entire Smash Team on whether he should be counted as an Echo, not only that, but Capcom also has several other IP that I see getting in before Chun. Lloyd doesn't top the Tales polls because those are aimed at the Tales fanbase, not the Smash fanbase. There's some overlap, but they're overall just different demographics.
I can't speak on Castlevania, but I promise you there's definitely new content that can feasibly be added for SNK.To be honest I think Castlevania and SNK are the least likely.
