I'm aware of Touhou's online fanbase and I still think if the main series is completely officially unlocalized that would indeed give pause to those making the decisions. Companies aren't going to value unofficial patches the same way fans do.
Luckily, official Touhou games have been coming out on Steam since like 2017, and while they aren't translated officially outside of Antinomy of Common Flowers, they are still available for a Western market and most menus use both languages to begin with.

Granted, Touhou's presence is still primarily Japanese, but Antinomy of Common Flowers is also on Switch in both languages (even shows up on the English website), so there's even a game Sakurai can go tell people to look into during the Presents lol

I'm not really following the Sega conversation but it's pretty much the case with every company that we only focus on two, three, maybe four series from each and basically ignore the rest of the company's entire library. Certainly not limited to Sega.

I'm not sure if that's right or wrong, but we haven't really received any series that wouldn't be considered at the top of that company's echelon, whether in general standing or just popularity-wise, Nintendo notwithstanding.

This would be perfectly understandable if people didn't also then bring up a few other SEGA characters that are much much less important than a bunch of the ones that are either being dismissed as Not Important Enough or are straight up not mentioned at all

ok but I would actually consider Crazy Taxi and SC5 to be among "the ones of inbetween importance" and not outright random obscure stuff
Which probably is just more evidence as to how warped the perception and remembrance of Sega's IPs are compared to the other companies.

For the record though I did know that Crazy Taxi was a pretty big property in its time, though I perceived it as something along the lines of Duck Hunt; Big, but now completely irrelevant.

Same with that rollerskating game that I know the name of but still can't recall. My brain keeps wanting to say Sunset Overdrive, but that is absolutely not what that is.

All I know about Space Channel 5 though is that it's a rhythm game some people liked and there's a character called "Ooh La La".

Is that the fighting game? That's not what I meant with main series, even if ZUN did make it.

SoR was brought up quite a bit after 4 released - the recency bias I talked about. And Sakura Wars seems to have a pretty loyal and somewhat vocal fanbase inside the Smash community - kinda like KOS-MOS. If you stick around long enough, you'll probably see Sakura being brought up every once in a while. In fact, aside from the usual Puyo/Yakuza/Monkey Ball/Atlus IPs circle, I'd even argue she's one of the most consistently brought up.
I know I'm far from being the most active user on here, but I've been watching this thread a pretty good amount for 2 years. Yeah people have brought up SoR and Sakura Wars occasionally but it's still not a lot compared to the big dogs from my experience.

I will give this thread credit where it's due. We have gotten better at discussing a variety of characters. But the fact that we still have people complaining from time to time means the community still has some work to do.

Antinomy is the fighting game yes, but like I said, the main shooters have also been made easily accessible on Steam for western markets since like 2017.

See, what I meant with people acting dismissive and dead IP and all that isn't just these random IP being brought up at all, but rather this situation I've seen plenty of times:

A. Person makes a short summary of The Noteworthy SEGA Things

B. Mainly mentions, like, the big ones

C. After that, they also give brief mention to some smaller stuff.....but instead of mentioning the IP SEGA have that are still notable and important but just not quite as big as The Big Ones, they skip straight to random stuff like, again, Billy and Ristar

D. They say something like "so as you can see, sega don't exactly have that many noteworthy franchises aside from the few really big ones"

It pisses me off because it's almost kinda like the "who killed Hannibal?" meme. If you're going to completely scrub off a bunch of noteworthy properties and skip straight to giving honorable mention to stuff that's a thousand times less important, then of course SEGA's franchise library will look much less impressive than it actually is.
True, but you gotta be fair to them, because... that's probably what they've played. Like, okay, I did my research on Phantasy Star in the last few months, but I've still only played PSO2, so I'm more likely to talk about that specific game. In general, people won't stray too far from what they already know. I don't think that even applies to just Smash speculation either, that's how we generally behave as humans.

That's why it's important to keep a clearer head and just tell people of your own experience in these cases, perhaps. That's pretty much how Ivander Ivander got me to play PSO2 in the first place - I randomly asked this thread about it during the time of the Matoi rumors. Not only was Ivander the only one to give me an answer, but he made quite a lengthy post talking about PSO2. Which in turn made me want to give it a shot.

I know it takes time and you're not under any obligation to convince anyone... but hey, it's always cool to get other people to try something you like.

So give us the big *** post on Skies of Arcadia. You know you wanna do it.

I just wanna grill. Those that disrupt the grilling are ignored.
Though I'll say, there has been some nice variety. The lack of credible leaks probably helps; hopefully it remains that way.

I'm still mostly dipping from here for a while, but here's a little thing I thought of; who's your most wanted for CP11, and who do you wish was playable in the base game (not including fighters who are DLC)?

My most wanted for CP11: Sora
Character I wish was playable in base: Shadow
Most Wanted CP11: Reimu
Character I wish was playable in base game: Midna

Min Min and Steve leaked easily since they were in standalone presentations

Sephiroth, Pyra/Mythra and Kazuya didn’t leak cuz they were revealed as a part of a larger presentation (TGA 2020, Feb 2021 Direct and E3 2021 respectively)

the final character could be leaked since it’s a standalone

I believe there’s now someone on Twitter claiming to be the person who made the “I work at Disney music and Nintendo rang to get the rights to use several KH music tracks in a Digital event on October 5th” Leak

apparently they chose October the 5th by pure luck. They said they chose October 5th because NASB’s date was apparently leaked to be October 5th. They didn’t make the other one though that claimed September nor did they make the original version according to them.

funny if true. Too bad there’s no evidence backing their claims but we’ll find out in a week

You got a point on that one. So if people want to go in blind, avoid ALL leaks.

I'm starting to think that Sora may be a false truth on being the Final Fighter. Just tread with caution since Panic can appear at any moment with 7 days left on the clock.

In general, people won't stray too far from what they already know.
You also can't really get a feel on what a game is like unless you:
  • Do extensive research, which probably includes watching a good let's play of it for a visual aid as well as an explanation of game mechanics (and on that front, the only Let's Player that does go through and explain things that I know of is Chuggaaconroy).
  • Play the game yourself.
Neither of which are particularly speedy, and the latter one isn't always possible, or would just take too long to even start depending on when you'd even be able to get the game, have time to play it, etc.

EDIT: Also research isn't fun unless you're already hooked so there's that too.

Correctly guessing a date isn't really that impressive to me, mostly because there's a gazillion fake leaks out there that list random dates and end up being completely wrong.

Sooner or later, one of them is bound to end up getting lucky.

?

I see you here all the time.

...

Oh no I'm throwing off the bell curve...
Lol. Well I'm just saying I post here on average like idk 2-5 days per week. Which is a good amount but it doesn't seem a lot to me compared to some people who seem to actively take part in discussions everyday, whereas I just drop in whenever I see an interesting convo or I'm in the mood to talk about something.

Perhaps it's because I don't actively follow leaks, but I still don't get the logic that there's any situation in which getting a 1 in 365 chance correct is anything but impressive.

A small sidenote to forget about the tension for a bit. Any games you are waiting for either this week or next week?

Mine is Metroid Dread and Exzeus Collection.

It's literally so easy to take credit for a 4chan leak (especially without any proof), though the person's remorse seems genuine. I'd say it doesn't change the possibility of it being true, but only because it was already such a long shot in the first place.

It's not really 1 in 365, unless there was ever a chance the last character was coming out in June 2022.

Sakurai said the last character was coming out before the end of the year, so the odds were closer to 1 in 150. Characters have been released two to three months apart from each other, so I can easily see someone taking a shot in the dark and getting lucky.

It's also impressive when the monkey on the typewriter finally pumps out Shakespeare, but it's also still just indicative of what can happen given chance and time.

Wouldn't the credit taking post be a confirmation that it's fake though? I suppose that fact also doesn't change the possibility of it being true though...

Feels to me like the Sora stuff is a setup for disappointment.
How is people saying "fake leak is fake" a setup for disappointment?

It's also impressive when the monkey on the typewriter finally pumps out Shakespeare, but it's also still just indicative of what can happen given chance and time.
Bring up monkeys and typewriters all you want, I still think the probability is being given way less credit than it deserves.

It can't be taken as confirmation because there's no proof that they were the person who posted it. The source is literally just "dude trust me."

If the person had proof of posting it, then yeah it's dead. But without that proof there's always a chance that this person is faking making the post for whatever reason.

Like I said though, doesn't really change anything since the original "leak" is likely fake regardless.
