I feel like every other video posted on Nintendo Mobile channel is about a new event for Dragalia Lost, like even comparing to FEH, so it does make sense to reduce some of it. I feel the game is doing okay still, it's still like 3rd best revenue for a Nintendo mobile game and it isn't even out in (most of) Europe.

But it does feel like Nintendo is slowly halting their mobile ventures. Which I don't mind as mobile isn't my thing but sucks for those who play them actively.

...then again we have that Niantic Pikmin game on the way so...

As someone who's been through this song and dance with many, MANY games before, this is basically just the devs trying to say "We're shutting our doors soon" without directly saying it and causing everyone to jump ship at once. Dragalia's doomed, more or less.

I've been in talks with a friend of mine who actually works on Dragalia, and he's always lamented how bad things were internally, so this news doesn't come to much a shock to me.

How bad exactly?

Like... the writing has been on the wall for months bad?

He's never gone too deep into it due to Nintendo being Nintendo, but he's been bemoaning the state of affairs since sometime last year iirc, and whenever people would whale in the Discord in Dragalia, he'd jokingly say "Please, don't throw money at the game, you'll regret it."

So.... yeah, hasn't been too great I'd say.

Unrelated but it looks like Cygames is beginning to wind down support for Dragalia Lost

Wouldn't be terribly surprised if the game got shuttered sometime within the next year...
I steer clear of any game that enmeshes itself so deeply in the need to connect to a functioning server for basic functionality and this is one of the primary reasons why. (The other being the mystery meat code of these games making unsolicited connections and sending Viridi-knows-what information to Palutena-knows-where. I don't even own an actual """smart""" device and I don't want one.)

When people spend their money on these types of games, and in truth, any game in a digital format, they need to understand that what they are paying for is in fact not a product but a service. And the longevity of said service is at the mercy of the corporation and if the service doesn't keep the corporation fed with profits? Keeping that service running is now a money sink and it's time to put it out to pasture.

This isn't to place physical media upon a pedestal of infallibility as the panacea of game preservation. Hardware still breaks down, discs eventually rot, random bit flips happen. But the cardinal sin of the push for digital distribution is in how it deprives the customer of any meaningful control over what they paid for. You do not "own" these games, you are simply being granted access to the company's clubhouse and if they decide you aren't welcome anymore well then tough luck kiddo, thems the brakes.

You get what you pay for.

Fair enough. I had a lot of those for a long-ass time, but having a smart phone is just way too convenient in today's world.
That's for sure. I just have giant hands and typing anything at small phone keyboards is torture for me. Tablets are OK.

...oh, yeah. Smash speculation. I think we will eventually get a mobile game character in Smash, though probably not in Ultimate. It's a huge part of modern gaming and while Nintendo has been slow to follow, they're still making a steady effort in having some of their IPs on mobile devices.

Issues regarding preservation are valid but I don't see that being a deal-breaker with some older hardware getting increasingly harder to access and successful mobile games like Granblue Fantasy and Touken Ranbu getting console spin-offs.

Yeah, preservation's always been a concern of mine in regards to mobile gaming.

Granted, you have series like Fate, Granblue, etc, which have a bevy of non-mobile games at this point to effectively act as preservation, some series, like Fate for example, being nearly 20 years old at this point.

I feel like there's potential to use the Dragalia Lost IP as a stand-alone game for the Switch if/before the mobile game goes down, would keep it somewhat alive at least.

tbh Granblue has a similar issue to DL in that it doesn't have a proper worldwide release, except it's even worse because it hasn't been officially released in NA, either.

okay, yes, the fighting game actually does have WW presence. But I'd argue it'd still be really awkward to add a character whose main game is still stuck in Japan in a post-Brawl world.

I remember the old Granblue in Smash leak from back at the day that turned out to be fake.
To this day I'm still not a huge fan of the idea of a mobile game character being in Smash, especially from gacha games.

Here's the issue. I'm a Pokemon collector. I catch 'em all. I have a Living Pokedex.

Dynamax is the worst. It's literally nothing. Just Pokemon get big.

Mega Evolutions are next. They look rad as hell...but you can't collect them. Because they're tied to items you can't bank. So my awesome Mega Charizard X? Gone next game.

Then Regional Forms. Basically new Pokemon. Different looks/types/stats/moves from the original type. But despite all those differences, they share a Pokedex number. Which makes them a clerical annoyance. Either have to reorganize the entire Pokedex around them or keep them separate.

Gigantamax. Better than Dynamax, because it IS at least a unique form. And while temporary like Megas, unlike Megas, Gigantamax is a flag tied to the Pokemon, so it stays with it forever, even in the bank.

New Evolutions. Best of all worlds. Cool new forms. Permanent. Separate Pokemon with unique Pokedex number, so it just goes in it's proper slot. Perfect.
Unless they are like many of Gen 4’s evolutions that completely ruin the base form. Electabuzz is my favorite electric type but Electivire just looks dumb to me and is among my least favorites. Tangrowth, Lickilicky, Rhyperior, Ambipom, and Probopass are all worse than their base forms. I also prefer Sneasel to Weavile but at least both are cool. Magmortar is pretty dumb too but Magmar was never cool to begin with.

What about Xander: Spring Prince from the Spring Festival summoning event from Fire Emblem Heroes?

What I consider to be "the big five" when it comes to Ace Attorney music that absolutely should get in are:
  1. Phoenix Wright ~ Objection! 2001
  2. Pursuit ~ Cornered
  3. Steel Samurai Theme (Remix)
  4. Turnabout Sisters Ballad (Remix)
  5. Phoenix Wright ~ Objection! 2013
Objection 2001 and Cornered are staple tracks that are practically synonymous with Phoenix. With how frequently the Steel Samurai shows up throughout the franchise, his theme is also super prominent. It's very frequently the encore track they use to wrap up the AA orchestra concerts, so it's a favorite in that regard. Objection 2013 is a remix of the 2004 Objection theme and has essentially become Phoenix's theme in the newer games. Turnabout Sisters Ballad has the setback of being a much slower, lower-intensity song, but with it being more or less the theme of Maya and Mia, it's a central track to the original trilogy, and it can be made into a fitting Smash track in the hands of a great arranger (see ACE's remix of Beneath the Mask for an example).

A handful of other prominent tracks that I think would be great to include, but aren't on the same level as the big five (and now that I'm playing through Great Ace Attorney Chronicles, I can actually recommend tracks from that!):
Honestly I have a whole slew of other tracks that I'd want to include, but I don't want to go overboard and post like 50 suggestions lol. These games have so many good songs, it's hard to narrow things down
Very nice selection.

A personal favorite of mine which I wouldn't really expect to come with Phoenix if he gets in is Ema's theme

Her theme has different versions across the series but this one is probably the best option for Smash, if they ever include this without doing the remix treatment

Happy Friday

Unfortunate for Dragalia. Its a bit disappointing to see mobile games lose player activity at a rate much higher compared to big console games and other big non-mobile games. There are some genuine studios who put so much effort into their mobile games while also avoiding microtransaction promotion to the best of their ability, and yet still crumble due to either financial issues or a severe lack of popularity

Man, I really hope I was wrong before and that the final character is revealed next week. The longer we wait, the more likely we are to be disappointed by the final reveal.

Travis' spirit battle uses a Mii Swordfighter so I'm assuming he'll appear with the Travis costume if you have it. (He has a Captain Falcon helmet if you don't, which is amusingly still fitting.) This would bring the total number of Mii costumes that affect a spirit battle to 7, if I'm not mistaken. Those being:
  • Cuphead
  • Tifa
  • Aerith
  • Barret
  • Ryo Sazaki
  • Heihachi
  • and now Travis Touchdown

Storytime? Sounds like an amusing read/watch if you have a link.
Kinda wish Shantae would do that as well, like Ninjara did

Gen 4's evolutions are also a bunch of my favorite Pokemon of all time though. Honchkrow(the greatest), Mamoswine, Weavile, Mangezone, Gallade, Dusknoir.

Also, the Mega Evolutions are almost universally great looking. They just needed to be new REAL evolutions instead.

Yeah, almost every Mega is really cool. The only ones I don’t care for are Altaria, Heracross and Sharpedo. A lot of Megas are big improvements over the base designs like Sceptile, Swampert, Rayquaza, Abomasnow, Manectric, and Metagross (although base Metagross is great too).

Regardless, I'd like to inquire, since it's been a long time since I asked a question here.

Are we exactly certain that September is the final character reveal month?

Not certain but it seems highly likely that there will be a Nintendo Direct in September with Smash news in it.

Mind you that this is mostly based on precedent and there is no hard evidence supporting it.

New Metroid Dread trailer

Thumbnail looks so ****ing sick. And the video has some revealing cutscenes for anyone who wants to go blind when it comes to the story.

The mobility here looks crazy, and the variety of environments and enemies is definitely notable, at least compared to Samus Returns.

So this is something I just thought of the other day but how many of your favorite games are in Smash?

Looking at my top 27 favorite games, the ones that are in Smash are Super Castlevania 4, Metal Gear Solid, Minecraft, and Xenoblade 2.

No...

Chozo General for CP11.

Metroid dominates Smash Ultimate and "not another Metroid character" ends becoming the new "not another Fire Emblem characters".
Oh.....

That's the kind of chaos I would approve of.

Smash has a lot of my favorite games but 3 of my top aren’t represented yet: Final Fantasy IX, Rogue Galaxy, and Chrono Trigger. Out of my top 4, only Xenoblade Chronicles is in Smash. Many of my other favorites like DKC2, Persona, FFVII, MMX, and Pokémon are already in.
