So, I was binging some Alternate History Hub, and I figured I would propose to y'all a fun alternative gaming scenario.

What if Nintendo bought Sega?

For context, this scenario is not too much out of the question. In 2000, Sega was going through its huge identity crisis with their hardware under preforming, there were considerations to sell the company to Microsoft. If this were to happen, two things would need to occur. Nintendo would have to smell blood in the water and end up approaching Sega for the deal. If Nintendo did approach Sega in their darkest hour, some potential deal would have been at least on the table in some way, shape or form. There were also talks of a merger in 2003 with Sammy before Sammy decided to become the majority shareholder. Now obviously, this stuff may end up super messy. I also want to stress that Nintendo, at least at the time where this merger was viable, was not known for mergers or acquisitions. Even if they did see the opportunity, Nintendo could have easily just ignored the opportunity and just moved on. But that's no fun, so what if they did not?

A Dream Casted away

If this deal was to be made, one thing that Sega likely would have pursued is that there be some sort of life jacket to Dreamcast adopters. If Nintendo did decide to indulge Sega on this, this could have gone a few ways. First off, they could have pushed the idea off to their next console and included the Dreamcast programming and software in the Wii. They could have added an adapter to the Gamecube to let it play Dreamcast games. They could have made and alternative gamecube model that played both. Sega did wish for the Xbox at one point to be Dreamcast compatible, so the idea is not that far off.

A different Sonic

If Nintendo owned Sega, that means that as a result, the blue blur ends up being owned by Nintendo. I will discuss some other Sega franchises, but Sonic is interesting not only due to how big he is, but how his modern identity is defined by failure. The Adventure formula was formally retired after 06 bombed. Ever since then, the Sonic brand has always been shifting around, trying to find an identity that works for it.

In this timeline, Sonic is now under Nintendo's control. Does that mean that Sonic Team makes only amazing Sonic games? No. But it would likely mean there is a much stronger mandate on what they can do with Sonic. Nintendo has always leaned conservative on how they handle their core franchises. While there are exceptions like BotW, most of the time Nintendo is more comfortable sticking to a tried and true format. Even when they do deviate, such as with Skyward Sword or Mario Odyssey, there is still a lot of the old foundation that they drew upon originally. In this timeline, Sonic likely ends up sticking to what he was known for in 2001: The Adventure Formula and the Genesis Formula. As such, we end up with a more reigned in Sonic of sorts.

One thing that changes though is that Sonic is not as invested in its fan community. Things like Mania, the Sonic CD port, or the Sonic Mobile ports made by Christian Whitehead would not exist. Nintendo also would probably look at sonic modding with a lot more resistance than Sega does. Sega openly encourages their fans to mod sonic and express themselves. Nintendo...well, their history with mods is very tenuous to this day.

The other Sega franchises

Speculating on what franchises that Nintendo would push forward from Sega is a little hard, but there are a few camps they can go in. First, what is doing well at the time. In this camp, Phantasy Star and Crazy Taxi are solid picks. They both are popular series that had big releases on the Dreamcast. PSO being such a big title in its day would likely mean Nintendo adopts it in particular. The next category is where Nintendo plays favorites. Nights is one of Miyamoto's favorite games, so I could see us getting some more Nights love. Finally, you have the easiest department to look at: games that were coming to the Gamecube and did well. Monkey Ball and Puyo Puyo stick out. They both did well on the Gamecube, and likely would have done even better with Nintendo actively pushing them.

Also, as a minor addendum after discussing with @GoodGrief741 , but F Zero would now have a dedicated in house team after F Zero GX, so it might not die in this timeline.

Sega's Past Properties

So Sega has an extensive backlog that can be looked at for Nintendo to use. On the Virtual Console, the real question is Saturn stuff. Saturn Emulation is a bit finnicky to this day, but so is N64 emulation and Nintendo made that work on VC. Likely, most of the Saturn's big titles would be put on the VC, including some of the Japanese titles. This puts the Saturn in a bit of a fun spot, where it gets a bit more of a second glance from people. I could see people pushing Nintendo to remake or release Panzer Dragoon Saga in this timeline, so long as the source code is not lost in this timeline. Likely, much as we are clammoring for Nintendo do do things with Golden Sun, Donkey Kong, or F Zero in this timeline, perhaps there is more of a demand that Shining Force or Burning Rangers or even some of the Dreamcast's library gets some love. Heck, Nintendo might even see enough value and put the Sega CD on VC.

Pushing forwards from VC, likely Sega's properties end up lumped into the same sort of use by Nintendo that their old catalog does. They end up protective of roms and emulation, they trickle them out on Nintendo Online, with Sega Genesis Online being a big announcement they end up making for the Switch at some point.

Atlus at last?

Sega did end up purchasing Atlus in September of 2013. Now, we could say that Nintendo does not enter the bidding war for Atlus in 2013, but given that they made a far larger acquisition in this what if already and they were in an open collaboration with Altus at this point with SMT X FE, I am gonna say that we do get a Nintendo Atlus acquisition. What does this change? Not much to be honest.

The vast majority of Atlus' properties at the time were either in development or already coming to the 3DS. Likely what would happen is that Nintendo would either delay the Altus games that were in production to be shifted to Nintendo systems, or they would simply push that everything that was not already in development at that point would be a Switch exclusive from that point onward. Persona 5 imo is probably the cut off title of what we could consider in development prior to the buyout. Should Nintendo acquire them, Persona 5 might have been a day 1 switch port similar to Breath of the Wild.

Smash Bros

Now to tie it into this website, we got Smash. One thing that might be worth discussing is the impact of Sega being a first party. Does this mean that third parties are more scarce? Probably not. Mega Man was still one of the most requested characters of all time, if Namco developed the game they would probably end up getting Pac Man in anyway, and Snake already opened the floodgates for guest characters. I do not think that in this timeline, Sonic not being a guest character would stop third parties from being a thing.

One important thing that does change is that Sonic almost certainly is on the initial project proposal. Sonic was notably a last minute addition to Brawl do to negotiations being difficult, but with Nintendo owning him he would be one of the first characters in Brawl. I doubt that he would end up in Melee however. While the timeline might allow it to work, it would still be tight given that this deal would likely close out too late into Melee's development that Sonic would narrowly miss his chance. But for Brawl, he is a lock. Sonic's treatment likely would also be different in Smash. We likely would see far more Sonic content, given that Nintendo would own him. We would probably see mountains of support for Tails and Eggman for future Smash games, even more than in our own timeline. Shadow might be Sonic's echo fighter, who knows.

In terms of what other Sega franchises end up in Smash, that depends on what Nintendo and Sega are pushing forward at the time, or what Sakurai sees value in adding. The two I am the most confident in are Puyo Puyo and Phantasy Star. We likely would end up with Alis and Arle by Smash Ultimate in this timeline. With Persona now under Nintendo's umbrella and P5 being a switch launch title, we likely still get Joker. Outside of those three and the Sonic games, it gets harder to say who would be chosen. We are dealing with a what if that has a lot of asterisks and question marks already. Maybe in this alternative timeline, Nights is one of the never evers that people push for and he makes a comeback in Smash. Maybe some Genesis era characters or franchises like Comix Zone or Kid Chameleon end up becoming popular for Smash. It really is impossible to know.

But that's just my gut assumptions of what would happen, what do you all think?
This reminded me that there's honestly a part of me that wishes Nintendo was more willing to buy out other companies. Not necessarily big guys like Sega (I still see backlash towards Microsoft over the Zenimax buyout), but at least the ones that make sense like IntSys, Camelot, and Grezzo. Heck, the only reason they bought Next Level Games is because they didn't want to risk somebody else buying them.

As for this particular scenario... honestly, if it means Billy Hatcher is taken more seriously in Smash speculation, I'll take it.

I don't know. As much as I like the sound of this timeline, I think this focuses too positively for how Nintendo handles things when they're infamously tight fisted with their IPs. For this timeline to work, Nintendo would also have to be a much chiller and looser company compared to the real world counterpart.

If they're the same Nintendo in the timeline you've created, I don't think I'd see much difference in their decision making other than relying on Sega to help them work on the games they want to make. Not only that but Sonic Mania wouldn't exist because Nintendo would be protective of the Sonic IP and depending on how the last Sonic games sell would ultimately decide if Nintendo would be bothered to make more Sonic games. if they made Sonic 06 as bad as in the original timeline then Sonic would be as dead as Chibi Robo is now.

As for Sega's other IPs? What are they to Nintendo? I think most of Sega's employees would get sick of Nintendo's crap and leave, considering how developers like Square Enix have expressed their stories about Nintendo regarding Final Fantasy 7.

But hey, that's just the Bad Future. If you want the good ending, you have to gather all 7 time stones to create the Good Future.

To be fair, Nintendo already does kind of Own Sega, or at least Sonic Team

A Good amount of Key developers from Sonic team on Project for Games like Sonic Unleashed, Sonic Colors, Generations and Mario and Sonic Olympics would end up going to help work on Games like Galaxy 2, Mario Odyssey, even BOTW.

With all that being said, I actually Glad that Nintendo did not Buy Sega, as the only benefit would be that Sonic might have more Consistent Quality of Games, and I think Sonic Team could find their footing on that if they are committed

Sega honestly does a better Job than Nintendo when it comes to Media that aren't the Video Games. Sonic has Better Cartoons, Comics, Fan Material, Movie(s), Crossovers, etc than something like Mario. I would even Say Mobile games, though I think Mario Tour did really good in the Downloads department.

And when it comes to anything not Sonic Related, They doing well in the game Department. Any of the Unused Franchises Sega has aren't gonna be used by Nintendo, since Nintendo has trouble with Unused I.Ps as well

As for Smash though, Because Nintendo owns Sega at this point, it's much easier to communicate on using the characters, they don't pay Licensing fees, and they directly benefit from using the Characters, So I think we would definitely have more than One Sonic character as of now. Tails, Shadow, & Knuckles would be Playable, and Eggman can go either way between Playable or Boss. The only thing is that a Character Currently on the Smash Roster would have to be Sacrficed though

I think it'd mean the death of the annual Sonic Hacking Contest and gems like this would have never existed

As for Doctor Mario being a grid puzzle rep and therefore the next should be from a different style of puzzle. That doesn’t make much sense. Deciding reps based off a checklist has never been how Smash operates.
We have occasionally gotten characters based on a checklist. Some examples:
  • NES character
  • Pokemon character
  • Fire Emblem character
  • Returning Veteran
  • Easy to Implement echo/clone character

Those were all on a checklist.

They should've bought AlphaDream when they had the chance and maybe started investing in new games for the Switch.

Fire Emblem character was never a checklist item. It was "new character", Fire Emblem just happened to fit both times.

Are we sure that wasn't the case for Roy? I can't remember if it was straight out clone option, or clone option from FE. The codename was EMBLEM, though, so, it sounds like it being a FE clone was important too. Corrin and Byleth, no. They were just lucky, as said.

I forgot about Roy, though I'm not sure I actually know the full story on him. I wanna say that he was a request from the higherups rather than a pick that Sakurai made, but I could be wrong there.

EDIT: According to SourceGaming, he's listed as "Emblem" in the files, so he was added because Sakurai wanted a Fire Emblem character. I will take the "L" on that.

I didn’t
I just joked about a part of what you said.
It looked to me like you thought that the joke was that people with glasses all talked like that rather than just being a play off of the stereotypical nerd trope.

If not then...it's whatever I guess.

Can we really call clones a checklist either? Most of the time many don’t seem to be intended. Rather just the team having a model lying around and saying “why not?” This seems to have changed with Ultimate and the Echo Label. Where unless regular fighters are also lumped under a checklist, I wouldn’t say they count.

As for Retro, Pokemon, and Veterans. Those seem to be the exception rather than the rule. And of we’re still viewing this in the context if genre representation, are largely irrelevant.

I remember in speculation for Sm4sh, I was speculating that Nintendo might by the next game.
I suspected we would get 5-6 Sonic characters (being Sonic, Knuckles, Tails, Amy, Shadow, and Eggman), as well as many more Assist Trophies (I'm guessing 5)- Rouge, Tikal, Metal Sonic, Big the Cat, Cream...though we clearly have several more options.
Stage wise, definitely a Chao Garden stage (perhaps with Chao integration), a Sonic stage that has a lot of grinding rails, and another Sonic stage or two of other varieties.
I'm also guessing we could get items along the lines of the power ups in the original games (the ones in the boxes), or even an animal release...safe (cage? I'm not sure what these are called).

Other series (I think that Sonic would be the only one to start with multiple characters), and that it would only be about 2/3 of all of these, with others added in Ultimate. More characters coming from...
  • Absolutely would think NiGHTS
  • Aiai (possibly a full set of four character swaps), and also a Monkey Ball Stage.
  • Puyo hands down, as well as Arle- who would have a Lip alt coloring.
  • Bayonetta might get an echo in Jeanne
  • Wonder Red
  • I think we would get Akira from Virtua Fighter as a character
  • Character from Yakuza
Stages from Panzer Dragoon and Shenmue, Toejam & Earl and Billy Hatcher

With NES Characters, I actually don't think it's true. I think that category is a more Broad Category in the "Surprise Character"

That's what Duck Hunt was Classfied in that Smash 4 Document, and that's also what Plant is also Considered.

Also I would keep Fire Emblem as a Category, since not only was Roy added as General FE Rep, but Ike was also that as well in Brawl. At this point as long as Fire Emblem is surviving, it will keep getting characters

Fully agree. It would be nice for Nintendo to have some more partnered companies fully in their wheelhouse, since they actually have so few.

I am far NOT the person to take Sakurai's word as dogma, especially wherein it is often used to placate the public...but...
we were told, directly, that in Melee, he wanted a NES rep, to represent the series.

tbh I’m not even surpised fire emblem gets priority or special treatment in smash, it obviously needs the advertisement and nintendo is a business overall
.....oh boy. It's been a 'special case' scenario for 5 of its 8 characters (meaning, essential 'checklists' that could have been given to any other series). Lucina, Chrom, Corrin, Byleth, and Roy. It's a series that has never had a game even reach the 4 million mark (yet is considered 'successful,'), it was chosen three times to promote games, has gotten 3 DLC characters (when the only other series to ever get more than one, is Final Fantasy), and it's also the only series to have 2 current echoes, and four full characters based on a single moveset origin.
That's a lot of special treatment. Especially for 'marketing.' I really wish we lived in a world where Chibi Robo, who had a game release right before the Sm4sh DLC, but instead we got Corrin.

That's true. Clones aren't a real checklist. Though to be fair, the ones that subvert it are unique too. Brawl had no traditional clones in the same way, as the entire roster was decided from the start. Wolf was a last minute programming, but was meant to be there.

In Ultimate, the base roster was decided early on, including Echoes. The only actual character before the Passes was PP(there's debate if it's base roster or DLC, but either way, it's still separate to some degree. For the sake of it, it was added to the plan later for the point I'm making). PP is also not a clone or echo either way.

In Smash 64, the last 4 characters were last minute, with only two being close to traditional clones(Ness and Falcon deviate way more from their source to not fit that mold). In Melee, all of them clearly don't deviate much from the source, some more than others. Dr. Mario is the only one extremely close, with Falco, Roy, and Pichu being still separated but it's more the animations, lessso things like power. They're still similar. Ganondorf and Young Link massively deviate from their sources, which could be comparable to Jigglypuff in 64, who still plays very differently despite blatantly using the same animations for most(and sharing some traits). Smash 4 simply had costumes turned into clones. With Dr. Mario being the opposite of Melee, being super different from Mario, while Lucina and Dark Pit were similar enough to be labeled Echoes next game.

I forgot about Roy, though I'm not sure I actually know the full story on him. I wanna say that he was a request from the higherups rather than a pick that Sakurai made, but I could be wrong there.
I'll have to look into it. I think the case was he needed a Fire Emblem Clone since it was the only character type that could fit, and then asked for help, which eventually lead to Roy in order to help advertise his game. Roy is the only FE character to also appear in Smash before their game ever released. Corrin was just not released internationally, and respectively, Byleth was released well after. Also, Ike was chosen cause he was from the latest FE too, and to be fair, that's also related to why Chrom was going to be in(before Robin took the spot). So only really Lucina and Marth weren't about "latest game" at any point. It's for that reason that people tend to look at FE as shill picks. They're not that off really.

For the record- by clones being a checklist, I mean that when they have the options, they go through a checklist of who they see as viable options. I often, personally, disagree with the choices. I never would have added Dark Pit, Chrom, Lucina, or Richter...I understand Dark Samus, Daisy, and Ken.

I just edited that post after doing a bit of digging and finding that, yeah, Roy was picked like Pokémon are nowadays.

There's a fair warning to be had about the ever-so-prominent Butterfly Effect here: several franchises and indeed companies do not become Sega properties because they - in our timeline - were acquired later on. Not just ATLUS, but they're the most prominent in this particular conversation. Joker (or the presumed Persona rep) would work very differently as a result if he or his replacement is included.

The divergence might start becoming as apparent as soon as Melee depending on when the acquisition happens - at least in the fledging Smash community. Remember this April Fools' prank - which was the inspiration for one of Melee's longest lasting rumors?

It's reasonable to assume that the rumors would've gotten even more fuel if Nintendo bought out Sega soon before or after this April Fools. Not only would Sonic likely be on the initial design doc, there's a non-zero chance Tails is too if the reactions are noticed by Nintendo.

Post-2003 is worth noting since IPs / games made after that are going to start looking a bit different with Sega - still with Yuji Naka and others, mind - around. Who knows, maybe Sega are the ones who help with Starfox Assault instead of Bamco? How this acquisition impacts the Triforce machines - or hell, the Sega arcades - are other fun questions here. Maybe Sega's arcade staff help develop Nintendo's arcade games more? And if so, maybe those trickle into Smash and other projects?

Then there's another fun question with say the other spin offs. Are Nintendo willing enough to put Sonic / Tails into Mario Kart Double Dash as an example? Miyamoto considered that in our timeline, which tells quite a lot.

The knock-on effects might be felt as soon as Brawl depending on if Sega personell are asked to help Sakurai develop Brawl or not (perhaps the Virtua Fighter guys?). Which in turn may have some very interesting implications not just since Harada and co. may not be aiding Sakurai and co. by Smash 4 and onwards.

Overall, it's a really interesting timeline, that's for certain.

I just edited that post after doing a bit of digging and finding that, yeah, Roy was picked like Pokémon are nowadays.
I got no complaints here. It led to a kickass remade moveset. And then Chrom, who had to have all new animations due to Roy now holding his sword a different way, so a very nice treat. Like, Awakening makes me shrug, but when I saw Chrom got knocked out in Robin & Lucina's trailer and then him being dismissed in the Palutena Guidance, I wanted him in Smash. Finding out he was meant for it made it worse. It's why I'm not surprised he got in. He felt missing. If Lucina was never there(including as a costume), it wouldn't be as big of a deal to me. They got a cool new FE character who is fun and unique. Fair enough. But they already made the trio all important to Smash. How can you just ignore a great one? Though that said, you'd have to either have him as an Echo of Ike, a last minute pseudo-clone of Ike and Marth(more or less what he is now, since he uses Roy as a base), or one last FE DLC character to add him as a special clone just like the other three were.

So in the end, while he got shafted, we got a really kickass Chrom in Ultimate who does a great job feeling super fun and stand out. Sure, Echo and all, but he ain't Daisy either.

Question guys, imagine for just a second that we will get 2 third party characters from the same company in FP2. So, that means that CP11 is either a Microsoft, Square-Enix or Bandai-Namco rep, who do you want???

Microsoft - Master Chief, Joanna Dark, Marcus Phoenix, Battletoads, etc
Square-Enix - 2B, Geno, Chrono, Sora, etc
Bandai-Namco - Agumon, Chosen Undead, KOS-MOS, The Prince, etc.

Microsoft: Master Chief
Square Enix: Gex, Sora
Bandai Namco: Prince of All Cosmos, Don-chan

For the record- by clones being a checklist, I mean that when they have the options, they go through a checklist of who they see as viable options. I often, personally, disagree with the choices. I never would have added Dark Pit, Chrom, Lucina, or Richter...I understand Dark Samus, Daisy, and Ken.
Ironically, most of the characters you dislike weren't actually picked specifically to be clones.
  • Dark Pit was originally going to be an alternate costume, but Sakurai thought it would be weird for him to use Pit's Final Smash, so he gave him his own slot and Zelda's Final Smash.
    • Looking back, it's kind of hilarious just how angry people were at a character who probably took 2-3 days max to create considering how close the end product was to being just a pallet swap.
  • Chrom was actually likely chosen so he could be an Echo Fighter.
  • Lucina was also supposed to be an alternate costume due to her connection to Marth, but then Sakurai went "but what if she didn't have Marth's tipper mechanic?", and a few property changes later, Lucina the clone was born.
  • Simon and Richter were picked together rather than Richter being an afterthought later like most other clones are. Simon was included because he was the OG and also the most recognizable in the west and Richter was included because he was popular in Japan. Adding both also allowed them to combine abilities, and they probably would have been alternate costumes were it not for the differing personalities.

I don't think being better utilized than Daisy makes him a 'stand out.' Fun is absolutely even more subjective. The fact that they made him an 'Ike echo,' based on ...1 move(?), when he is clearly a Roy/Marth/Lucina, just shows even more that they will continually make exceptions for Fire Emblem.\

I do recall all of that information, but I'm not sure it changes anything.

Oh it wasn't supposed to change your opinion. I just thought it was interesting.

Why didn't he even get a 0 effort clone slot? The world may never know.

The most ironic thing is that had Alph became his own character in ssb4, people would have hated him too. The Echo Fighter label really did do wonders for the perception of these kinds of characters.

This pretty much sums up why I freaking hate it when they do trailers where they use character exclusions as a punchline. The only one that I can tolerate is Terry's since it seems to be more of a homage to King of Fighters (IIRC the series did the whole letter thing too) than a "lol look guys, these guys didn't get in!", and even then it's probably also because I have 0 connection to any of them.

He's nothing like an Ike Echo. That's not how it works. So... no, he's still a Roy Echo. Roy also separated himself massively from Marth. Chrom/Roy are not very similar to Lucina/Marth beyond the fact that Chrom and Lucina do not have some type of tipper-like mechanic. That's really it. They play very differently.

Chrom always had a move similar to Ike's Aether, and still uses it differently from Ike as well. Using Ike's Aether to create a new animation was just basic development practice. And yes, Chrom stands out more than ones like Daisy because he actually plays quite differently from Roy, and has an entirely different move.

Pikmin & Alph is not as simple as the others. First, we know Rock Pikmin were considered on Pikmin & Olimar. This would be the best way to make him an Echo, giving him a new Pikmin, which are an important part of the moveset. It's only a misconception in international versions by referring them solely as the Captain's Name that people think the Pikmin don't matter. But we know that's not the case through research. So first and foremost, the Pikmin are an important part to Alph being separated. This also means that they need an interesting way to make him stick out a little. Keep in mind Daisy is the first Echo to have almost zero gameplay differences in any meaningful way as is(her only thing is different hurtboxes. Richter has an element difference, as does Dark Samus). So it wasn't going to be a Daisy-level, as Lucina and Dark Pit weren't either. They had actual gameplay differences. That means that Alph, regardless, had to have something. Pikmin were also important, as I just said, so that means "what can they do with the Pikmin?". That means Rock Pikmin was the only feasible option at the time unless they wanted to also give him Wing Pikmin and keep Pikmin Chain. So 1 or 2 Pikmin. Either works. This also means, if they want to keep Rock Pikmin, they have to make a new model and make sure it has no bugs. This isn't a recolor situation either, or just taking an already available model(remember the Rock Pikmin were not on the 3DS either, so they need to take the model from the Wii U version and remake it in time to release Smash 3DS. It took a while for Smash Wii U to come out too, so they had to take any 3DS models(including ones for playable characters) and make sure they work on the Wii U respectively. Worth noting, in this case, that's why Smash Run also was unfeasible on the Wii U. Those were from 3DS games, so they'd have to constantly rework them for the Wii U version, and that's a lot of extra work. Now, to further note, yes, they were a Trophy in the 3DS version. But a trophy is not the same as a working model. That was only available via a Wii U game, so likely all they could easily do. This is probably why the concept was scrapped. Alph was even considered as a clone, yet scrapped. Why? The best we can figure is that gameplay issues arose. Could it be because of Rock Pikmin being unfeasible to get done fast? Lack of ideas? Maybe they couldn't figure out how to make it stand out from Purple Pikmin. Only thing it wouldn't really be is a technical issue, as that was already taken care of to make Pikmin & Olimar usable in the first place(5 to 3) Pikmin.

That doesn't mean it's a bad idea, but after that, Pikmin fell off the radar, so it's not even surprising he's still a costume in Ultimate. There was nothing big to promote anymore. Now, it does suck Rock Pikmin still aren't usable, but it's probably just a case of "...what makes them unique from Purple Pikmin?" Ironically Rock Pikmin did appear on the 3DS at some point... in 2017, well after the 3DS Smash version. Funny that. They aren't in the Japan-only Pikmin game either, which was after Pikmin 3. Maybe there was some oddity with the model that made it hard to use on the 3DS or something? I dunno. That could've played a role too.

Wouldn’t You Like To Know?
Heres a thought, since we know for sure assists can be upgraded into full fighters the next game (ie: Mac in Brawl to 4, Isabelle from 4 to Ultimate). Do you guys think Echo fighters or Alts can or will be upgraded in a similar manner?

The main 3 who would fit this scenario are Alph, Dark Samus, and Daisy.

Alts can easily become characters, Echoes or otherwise.

Echoes aren't going to really be much different from regular clones. They'll see changes, possibly, at best. But massive changes? No. Nobody has gotten any massive change. They've definitely gotten notable changes, but they always resemble their previous self.

Honestly, the only reason that I can think of as to why Rock Pikmin aren't in Super Smash Bros. is because Olimar's animations kind of rely on the Pikmin's squash & stretch heavy animations, and the Rock Pikmin don't do that. They are bigger around than Purple Pikmin are, so they might be noticeable there, but there's also the issue that the grey attack trails wouldn't be as different from the white ones as the purple ones are.

I think you could remedy this a bit by fixing Olimar's animations so that they're less ambiguous (which kind of needs to happen anyway), and giving them a freaking HUD element. Jeez even Pikmin has it and the little guys are easier to see in those games.

I at least want Richter to get Hydro Storm as a final smash instead of a carbon copy of Simon’s

and Lucina to use the crossbow she used in Codename STEAM and Project X Zone 2

and maybe Daisy to have some Sports game related moves
