I very much like the idea of a defensive character with powerful but limited tools for Resi, easiest example is giving Jill the magnum and make it do like 25% damage and come out real fast, but she has a lot of endlag so missing is dangerous and you only have a certain amount of shots per stock.
I love this idea. It’d make the character a massively powerful threat in the early game but give them a real sense of desperation in the end game, forcing more trickery and playing around the opponents.

Why does Leon have to escort her when she can just do that?
Probably laziness; it'd also explain why Peach often has to be rescued despite having moments where she's able to kick ass on her own.

People are forgetting that Dante isn't the only potential Capcom rep we could see. Apart from Phoenix Wright, there are other Capcom characters like Amaterasu, Morrigan since she's the Capcom crossover queen, Viewtiful Joe, and to a much lesser extent Frank West and Mike Haggar.
Plus, there's also Chun-Li, even with the fact that Ryu and Ken are already repping Street Fighter.

Probably because all those other franchises are far less likely than Resident Evil or Dante. If Monster Hunter isn't ever going to get a playable character, it's either RE or Devil May Cry next on deck.

Ashley pretends she can't so that she doesn't have to get bothered about it, in fact, she hired Leon specifically so nobody would find out as it's more believable she got saved by him. I made this up and I now declare it canon

I really don't get why Dragonborn didn't get more speculation beyond just a few people. Was the Doom Slayer hype just that convincing to people? Still, even before all of those Doom ports got announced Dragonborn didn't get much attention.
Because Elder Scrolls characters are avatar characters and customizable. People find it far more likely for established videogame characters to be chosen.

Same reason a Dark Souls character was never highly speculated for Namco over Tales or Tekken.

I really don't think CP11 is a new company rep, or a capcom character. It has to be a character that goes against Nintendo's usual marketing choices. FP1 had only 5 characters. This time there are 6 characters, which means they added an extra slot for one character in paticular.

My only ideas for why this could be is either Master Chief so Microsoft can get a 2nd character or Waluigi because he doesn't really market anything in paticular as a DLC character.

I don't think it's Dante, Ryu Hayabusa, etc... because those are far too generic for an extra slot in a Fighter's Pass. I don't think it's Gen 8 Pokemon either because I feel like if they added an extra slot it wouldn't be for a first party promotional character, they've already done that twice in this pass. I also know Nintendo is out of touch and all, but they wouldn't end the entire DLC on a pokemon.

I don't see it as an extra slot, just a 6th DLC. It can be anyone, but I think another Microsoft character or characters who are Assists like Waluigi are very likely.

You’re assuming that CP11 is even that extra fighter.
It COULD be, good chance it is, but we don’t know.

Too late. To spite you I'll make Samus WLW. That is, I would if Nintendo didn't already announce that in officially licensed Nintendo stuff

Tbf I doubt the extra character is meant to be seen as a massive pull, in all likelihood Nintendo said "Yo can we put an extra character in there? It'd be higher profits". This also implies Smash was ever concerned about promoting too many first party titles

Which is dumb because :ultcorrin::ultrobin::ultsteve::ultvillager:.

I get that the people here don't tend to get attached to avatar characters, but things like the Dragonborn being an avatar character isn't going to stop them from adding a Skyrim character because it's freaking Skyrim.

Dark Souls also had the issues of being neither inhouse nor ongoing; so a very unfair choice for a second rep for them. That was why when Tales Of felt 'too obvious' and we thought Tekken was 'off the table' a few people such as myself were pretty open to the idea of their V-Pets being a logical contender.

EDIT: Just want to say; it is kinda perfect for a third one, I could actually potentially see it beating Lloyd, Agumon, and Mametchi NOW.

They do, but we don't know them. Samus has also been depicted as going to a bar in the games so she's the kind of gal to party all night

Tbf those don't have the ability to be other kinds of species through character select as only one of them is basically DnD

Why do people treat assist promotions as some massively hard thing to do when they literally just have to remove one item from the game?

All they would have to do is change the assist trophy item so that it can no longer summon Waluigi. That's it, it's not some massive development undertaking that requires the whole staff to work Monday-Sunday on crunch time to program.

Biased Post Alert + Devils Advocate Alert:

Our other Capcom characters were Megaman, Ryu, and Ken. I don’t think either of those series were as big financially as MonHun, RE, or DMC. If a character has a more appealing moveset to Sakurai and potentially more fan demand it is possible someone like Morrigan, Phoenix, Frank Weat, Ameratsu, etc. makes it in.

Granted, I’d still say RE and DMC are the frontrunners, as they are both popular among the Smash community and have stellar moveset potential, but I wouldn’t be so quick to rule out the other potential Capcom franchises.

Nobody thinks it's impossible, people just think that Sakurai and Nintendo are satisfied with the role given to the character, otherwise we'd have seen it a long time ago, especially as we do have an AT who was considered playable

I agree with this post but didn't you assume they had to work for months and months and months to adjust every single spirit battle featuring Waluigi?

The Dragonborn does have a specific look used for marketing though, and from a cursory glance, the other races share about the same dimensions.

It's also only feasible for about 3 different alts so it would probably just be something like Nord male (the usual depiction), Nord female, and then maybe Khajit (probably not how you spell it) male/female or something. I can't say for certain that that would be satisfactory, but I have a feeling that the other races won't be too much of an issue.

That's bars in real life. In video games, bars are the hub place to pick up your next quests and story objectives. Samus is just getting gossip, intel and picking up the latest mission like any player character does.

Gotta feel sorry for the poor guys who try to pick up girls at a video game bar only for the girls to be picking up quests instead.

I really hope I don't have to explain that I'm not serious about this.

Oh no I agree here, the quests Samus takes on are just from other WLWs and it's about giving them a good time

Exactly. That, and if Dante were Capcom's choice, I'd imagine it would've been more logical to have him as the E3 reveal. Besides, Phoenix, Morrigan, and Amaterasu are fairly popular characters in their own right that Nintendo could've easily considered.

We would have seen Steve a long time ago because he's from the biggest game in the world. We would have seen Banjo a long time ago because he's so highly requested, he should have been base roster.

These decisions are something that can just magically happen, they take time. Especially for characters like Waluigi who weren't even requested until Smash Ultimate was already finalized and DLC plans were being laid out.

And if Sakurai is so pleased with character roles, why would he have had no problem making Rex a playable character if he had time? Why is he fine with having Heihachi be a stage cameo and a costume? Why is he fine with Min Min being a spirit and playable? Why is he fine with the countless characters that are represented in multiple ways in this game.

Like I said, it's not that hard. All they have to do is reprogram one aspect of the game which is not nearly as much as they did for Steve. I'm not saying Waluigi is 100% happening, but saying Sakurai and Nintendo are "pleased with the roles" is just nonsense, not to mention it would be a stupid reason to ignore a popular character request.

Megaman and Street Fighter are generally the main two Capcom franchises even if they're not the best selling. Resident Evil is the best selling, which is why its absence has been rather glaring. Devil May Cry probably would also have a much larger push if the old DMC games came out on Gamecube back in the day instead of PS2 only...for a long time Devil May Cry had no presence on Nintendo consoles so a lot of Nintendo fans were not as familiar with the franchise.

And as for the others, I just don't see Nintendo/Sakurai/Capcom wanting to push them in Smash over the bigger ones. It's hard enough to get a character in Smash to begin with, now imagine not wanting to promote your biggest franchises over the less selling ones.

A lot of people see concepts they like and go "I'll believe it when I see it". It's nothing deep or complex.

Also, Waluigi was always super popular, I remember seeing people constantly talk about him in the Smash 4 days, only difference is that with Ultimate, death threats from a Waluigi stan were publically known and exaggerated to spin it as a movement, don't know why you feel the need to pretend he wasn't actually popular until 2018

Waluigi won't be part of the DLC, but he is a strong contender for the base roster in the next Smash. Only alternative is if they go with Toad/Toadette over him for the next Mario rep.

I keep hearing "death threats" but literally the only thing that was reported on in that one tweet was like 2 edgy memes about 9/11 and the holocaust sent to Sakurai. It's not like Waluigi fans were ready to burn down Bandai Namco HQ over Waluigi being excluded. They were just voicing their opinion about the character like every other fanbase does.

The popularity existed before the supposed "death threats" did anyway. He wasn't super popular in Smash 4, he was just talked about as a possible newcomer.

Here's the article where the Waluigi "harassment" was reported and there wasn't a single death threat sent to Sakurai, it was overblown.

As a skylanders fan (to a decent extent)
Y E S
What if, rather than choosing between Spyro and Crash, Sakurai splits the difference and adds their fellow Skylander to represent both; Chop Chop. He would be a give the platforming fans one of those sword-fighters they're so jealous of RPG fans for getting!

Even if this was the case, who's to say we didn't already get that "bonus" character?

I can't imagine the characters were all released in exactly the same order they were decided on, after all. For all we know that's for like, Sephiroth or something. Assuming the bump to six characters from five isn't just totally arbitrary, which it probably is anyway.

I've beaten this dead horse more times than I can count, but...just...think for a second. Imagine being told to promote Waluigi...and then having to retroactively accomodate for a character who was already an Assist Trophy. In base Ultimate.

So, like they did with Alucard for the Wii Fit Stage? Just don’t have him appear when Waluigi is on Stage? You know like how Toon Link won’t be on Spirit Tracks when any of the links are in the match?

...Wasn't it like two poor fans who took it too seriously and that was it?

That isn't going to mean much. Reggie did talk to Nintendo about Waluigi after seeing the massive outcry.

It makes sense. He's been massively popular for ages. Of course there was going to be fan outcry. There was for Isaac too(but apparently Nintendo nor Sakurai knew how big of a deal it was to get him playable. He can't hold a water to how well known Waluigi already is as playable, since even Sakurai acknowledges that him being playable wasn't in the cards all the way back in 4. It doesn't seem like much, but he doesn't talk about anyone else specifically like that. He speaks of AT's who couldn't be playable "at the time" so had this role instead. In addition, he never talked about this after DLC was a thing. If Sakurai is 100% in charge of DLC, he could plan purely around base roster and gameplay roles when choosing who is who. But... he isn't anymore. He has solely the power to veto, and "He's an AT!" is not exactly a strong argument anymore. It died the second base game roles were shifted with Min MIn(and somewhat was weakened with Trophies getting a playable role in 4, despite being Veterans. It shows that Sakurai... doesn't care all that much. And unlike last time, Mewtwo was both a Trophy and planned playable despite this. These in-game roles are way overstated on how important they are. And the other big thing is that he's not the only one to choose these. He has a team that helps him. A cut AT doesn't make them magically more likely, for instance. Sometimes it goes that way, but that's for other reasons. Dark Samus got in because of Echo and popularity. The AT got cut because she was chosen to be playable. This was decided by base game. The second DLC comes around, things change as needed).

Nintendo might not choose him, but they aren't going to care about the AT. Don't kid yourselves. It has jack-all to do with businesses. If Sakurai's going to say no, it's cause he can't figure out a good moveset. He is not going to avoid it because of the AT when A) He can disable it or B) He can ignore it.

The only time those roles would've mattered at most is trying to figure out DLC right away. ...And Nintendo controlled all of it anyway(PP doesn't count, as it was made DLC after base game was decided but still with base game in mind), so Sakurai may have veto'd some ideas for Pass 1 possibly. Sure. He might've already figured this was the only DLC and was satisfied with their roles at that time. Pass 2? If he did, we wouldn't have seen Min Min, who breaks the same fan rule "already a base game role that affects gameplay". AT's aren't actually different in that regard. He already makes them unable to appear in countless matches, picking and choosing.

If Waluigi isn't getting in, it's moveset issues(specifically unable to figure out how to make him dance in his head), Nintendo not suggesting him, or some kind of weird issue in that Sakurai can't do enough of what he wants(similar to moveset issues, but more than he can't use the animations he wants cause of "how they're represented" is still a thing to IP holders. Understandably so. If Sakurai doesn't own the character, he's limited). ...Albeit, I don't see the third thing being remotely likely, but the other two are reasonable possibilities. The third thing applies for 3rd parties generally, though. Pokemon included(which, well, isn't straight-out first party either).
