Honestly if Nintendo's not going to do other racing series besides Mario Kart, then a gradual shift towards a Super Smash Kart might be the best/only chance for various first party franchises to really get appearances in the racing game genre.
With all the potential cools levels from DK, Kirby, Zelda, Metroid, Star Fox, Kid Icarus, Xenoblade, etc would we be really losing that much more than what we would gain from it?

That could absolutely work. I mean Ace Combat 7 sold 2 and half million copies, which modern day SF would consider itself quite lucky to get. Its the weird disconnect of Nintendo vs. various third parties; numerous ones have figured out a decently profitable path for air/space shooters except them.Maybe an Ace-Combat style game that still keeps true to its Star Fox origins?
