You just summarized my feelings perfectly. The large majority of my most wanted characters are just my favorites who usually tend to be either villains or side characters. You’ll never hear me putting any character down for not being iconic enough. I just dedicated an entire day to talking about a side character from a PS2 JRPG just because he’s my favorite video game character.
Though someone (I'm thinking it was you) did once call it a shame that the mainest of main characters pretty much always get in before any other character. I do agree with that, since it could have lead to more variety.

Yeah, that was probably me. I’ve always advocated for side characters. I just personally find them to be more interesting than the protagonist most of the time. There are only a few exceptions where I actually like the MC the most like Velvet Crowe, Squall Leonhart, and Lightning.

"Minor irrelevant filler character" is not how you describe one of the most popular characters in gaming's biggest franchise. You're not talking about Chargin' Chuck here.

Also I think it's completely backwards to want characters because they represent their own game rather than just because you like the character in a crossover fighting game and that's how you end up with a roster filled with boring protagonists. Smash has been featuring side characters literally since day 1, but I guess that's where speculation is right now in the era of the Fighter Pass.
I think it's ascribing a lot of power to the fans in suggesting that if we wanted a side character more than the main character, we would actually receive what we wanted more often than not.

I know someone will raise Min Min, but remember how they said every character was the protagonist (lol) just so they could adhere to not adding a side character first.

Honestly, I have a gut feeling the next DLC fighter WON'T be from a JRPG. I'm looking at the ordering of Ultimate's roster and I can't seem to see 3 JRPG characters back to back. 2? yes. Not 3.

Imma bet at least ONE of the last two will be of a previously unrepresented genre. I’m feeling MOBA or shmup myself

Do Pokémon/Digimon count as RPGs? I mean I know Digimon are V-Pets but they're also Mon-Genre which... do we count that as RPG?

Yes, multi-million selling spin-offs where they are essential characters who are essential for instigating events.
I must've missed the part where Piranha Plant was essential to the plot. You also just were in favour of Goomba and Chargin Chuck. Not... not big narrative characters there.

Those games are still spin-offs. The fact is they appear in far fewer than Waluigi does. I mean, who has the AT here? And it's not a good idea if you want to start comparing who has been in better selling games. But it is a good point, because it is indicative of a wider audience.

I’ve mentioned this before but that’s one reason I want a Warcraft character. That series has pioneered so many different genres and all of them would be a first for Smash.

The other reason is just that I think Illidan is really cool 😎.

I mean the game was big enough to get a movie...

Well, I would like to see Freddy Fazbear, one of the reasons being he'd be the first to represent the survival-horror and point-and-click genres.

i would enjoy seeing waluigi in smash sometime down the road, but i very much do not want him in smash right now. without looking at the list, and leaving out krystal or any of the zelda ones to avoid bias, i can still think of at least five Assists i'd rather see if they decided to hand out one single promotion

i like pokemon but i haven't liked the last couple of choices they made, nor do i like any of the current set's prospects. unless they backtrack to gen 5 for some reason i'm good on pokemon right now

and if fire emblem has to have another character, make it someone without a cape and a sword just this one time. that series has lance users, axe users, people who ride horses, people who ride dragons, people who are dragons, dedicated mages, archers, ninjas, grumpy old men, people in full plate armor, and at least one girl who rides a whole entire pegasus into battle. regardless of your stance on sword users in general, i don't think it's unfair to say this one series in particular has maxed out its quota

Those enemies are vital to the plot, if Bowser didn't have those minions there would be no campaign.

Those enemies are interchangeable. You could've swapped them out with an entirely new batch and the plot would've remained exactly the same.

That's like saying Waluigi is integral to the plot because if you remove all the golfers there's no game. The character isn't "all Mario enemies" it's a specific one.

I think we should all try to be more accepting of each other’s opinions and not put someone down just because they want a different character than you. We all have different tastes and I think that’s what makes speculation so interesting.
Well my contention has never been who someone wants, want who you want, this one is about why a character is big or not, and how that makes them more or less eligible than another.

Specific enemies have specific placements which creates the adventure.

If enemies were as interchangeable as the golfers that would mean that people wouldn't notice the changes caused by enemy randomiser ROMs.

As far as unrepresented genres, while it has very little chance, I'd love to see Adventure Games get some representation via none other than Guybrush Threepwood himself:

Someone with a memorable design who not only was one of the PC's earliest memorable characters, but even had a WiiWare series to boot. And amusingly enough, because of who controls Lucasarts now, this would be the first Disney owned character in Smash Bros.

I can't pretend I know of them outside of gaming history discussions BUT that would be great. The more diverse an array of genres we can have covered the better.

I'd kinda also like Inazuma Eleven as a sports rep for Smash Bros.

And obviously I want a V-Pet rep; Digimon or otherwise.

Also Fatal Frame.

Visual novel, puzzle, or horror would be nice. I guess excluding Dr. Mario as puzzle
Saber would fit visual novel. Professor Layton would fit Puzzle. Then you have a bunch of known horror stuff like Resident Evil, Silent Hill, Fatal Frame, Dead Space, etc. Heck, Five Night's at Freddy's would be fitting for a Mii costume.

"hey can we put sora in"
"okay but you gotta give us a bajillion dollars and you gotta put in spirits of donald, goofy, mickey, ariel, elsa, and woody and buzz, take it or leave it"
"uh what about guybrush threepwood"
"whatever go nuts"

Modern problems require modern solutions.

Well now you're talking about gameplay. Swap out a Piranha Plant for a Deku Baba and the narrative of the game will remain basically the same, because a specific mook plays very little role in the story.

Like I've said before, my ideal Puzzle Adventure character would be:

Okay so...

Puzzle - Puyo Puyo (or Professor Layton but the tie breaker is that I have another genre for Level 5)

Horror - Fatal Frame (Nintendo partially own it, sorry Five Nights/Resident Evil/Silent Hill)

Sports - Inazuma Eleven (the other Level 5 series)

Rhythm - Rhythm Heaven (Nintendo own it)

V-Pet - Nintendogs (Nintendo own it, sorry Digimon and Tamagotchi - this hurt me)

Adventure - Famicom Detective Club (Nintendo own it, sorry Guybrush)

I'm sure there are more; feel free to copy my partial list into your own posts and improve it.

Adding some genres

MOBA - League of Legends (Sorry, DOTA and HOTS)

Visual Novel - Phoenix Wright hear me out: DEREK STILES FROM TRAUMA CENTER. it IS technically a VN (on top of surgery sim)

Bullet hell - Touhou Project (most other bullet hell reps would be unfeasible)

Simulation - a Sim from The Sims

Good additions; though awkwardly Famicom Detective Club seems to call itself both a Visual Novel and an Adventure game. (Although I would LOVE Derek Stiles, despite having sworn off Atlus after they massively upset a friend of mine with... insulting narrative decisions.)

Also, isn't Animal Crossing something a simulation in the Sims sense?

Rhythm - Ouendan/Elite Beat Agents (I know Rhythm Heaven would get in over it but Nintendo published the games and I have my bias)
