There is a possibility that Sonic will NOT be in the next Smash game because HE'S ALREADY DEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAD

...What?

It's going to be bizarre to see Sakura from Street Fighter and Sonic the Hedgehog fighting alongside people like this:

Mind you, I'm not complaining - I just figured that Yakuza would make it into this game before Sonic did. (it's a Sega-made mobile game)

Do you guys think a Dante and Waluigi would get more hype than Dante/Demi-fiend? Call me crazy but that's what im personally putting my chips on at this point.
I have no connection to the SMT series and have no desire to play SMT3 Remaster. And Waluigi for me just...exists.

But objectively speaking...yeah Waluigi would probably be more hype.

I'm not so sure about that, we did get 2 Sony games on PC and those were ps4 games
Being open to putting games on PC =/= being open working with other console manufacturers though. Sony's weirdly inconsistent when it comes to this sort of thing, so it's hard to gauge exactly what they'll do. One day they'll put MLB the Show '21 on Xbox and Uncharted 4 on PC, the next Gearbox announces that Borderlands 3 won't have crossplay on Playstation at "the publisher"'s request.

Now, I'm obviously not an insider, but I imagine right now is kind of a tumultuous time for Sony. They're riding high on the PS4, but have already hit two major speedbumps with the PS5 in the form of supply issues and blowback regarding their treatment of Japanese players and developers. It makes sense they don't really have a consistent policy on these things when the waters are rocky. Once they stabilize, then we'll see a more consistent policy.

If Sony concludes that it's best to stay the course, then I doubt we'll see a big push for cross-platform stuff from them in the near future. If things need to change, then Sony could be open with forming mutually beneficial relations with Nintendo and, down the road, allowing Nintendo to license their characters for Smash.

Only way I see Nintendo allowing for any Sony representatives in super smash is if that character has appeared on a Nintendo Platform or is in the process of being on one.

That isn't completely impossible though, I could see Sony willing to part ways with some older God of War games that they are no longer making too much money off of. Kratos did also appear in Fortnite so similarly to Cloud, I guess you could say he did make an appearance at least once.

Personally I could do without Waluigi, I'd much rather see resources focused on characters from unrepresented or under represented series in smash. He does appear to have strong support though, so I could see him happening possibly as a bonus character. Only reason I don't think he is part of the pass is because its likely been in development for quite some time. Seems unlikely to me that they would designate him as an assist and playable earlier on in development.

We'll see though, pass is almost to an end.
I disagree, Waluigi is the only character I want in smash. I don’t care if he is the 20th Mario character, I just want my favorite character playable in smash. It feels so wrong to not have him playable in a multiplayer party game, when that’s what he’s been playable in for two decades. Especially since all the human Mario characters are playable As well. Also there’s been plenty of time to have him developed as a dlc fighter.

As already established, Sonic's joining SMT Dx2 so either we're getting Dante or our Dark Souls rep

The final fighter could be Waluigi, Crash Bandicoot, Geno, and Master Chief on eachother's shoulders in a trenchcoat, and the reception would be mixed at best. As for me... I think I'm just gonna enjoy the last bit of this ride. It's been fun, and enough good has come out of it for me to be fine with however it ends.

That is because it should be Commandramon and take heavy influence from Tamagotchi and Call of Duty

The ultimate synthesis of Eastern and Western game-design philosophies.

I think Waluigi deserves it. He's not in my top five most wanted, but he's among very few characters that I wouldn't have a single negative feeling toward getting in over one. He could have an insanely unique moveset, and one Sakurai pretty much has free reign over.

I think that's a big reason we got PP as a bonus. Sakurai spent a loooong time fine tuning characters to be as representative of their series as they could be, partly setting parameters for the character right from step one. PP was an opportunity to make a character however he wanted, with a wide range of source material to choose from. I think Waluigi would be another chance for him to just let loose with the creative process, and I also think that'd be a poetic way for Sakurai to be able to end off character development.

Also, I can't not post this on the off chance someone hasn't seen it.

Warning there's like, some cartoon blood and swearing. In case that's needed.

but if he does make it and TOO BAD, WALUIGI TIME isn't the splash screen imma be real disappointed

Waluigi is one of the only characters who would disappoint me.

If they insist on having a minor irrelevant filler character who couldn't hold a game on their own, and they have to be from one of three games that are already flooding the roster - Fire Emblem and Pokémon could both provide better randomers because the existence of such characters in those franchises actually matter to their core identity.

Man, I just want Toad to be playable in Smash Bros already

For one of the core Mario characters, he's been done so dirty

Sorry to be mean, but that just happens to be how I feel about him. If Sakurai had a machine that could turn every request real then I would be fascinated to see what all the hulabalu lead to for him... but it's a tight contest with characters who have shaped the industry

My actual stance is that he just needs to be the protagonist of a single million selling game OR somehow become in a bigger figure Mario franchise than Toad, E.Gadd, or Kamek

No one asked for my opinion on this matter but I would rather have Waluigi join smash than another Pokemon and especially another Fire Emblem character.

What if they make a Waluigi version of Wario Land and promote it by upgrading Waluigi's Smash status? Not satire.

Time to shine, baybeeee
I could see Isaac getting in the next game as well given his AT outcry, but I guess he could also be the next Waluigi/Ridley if he wasn't.

Of course, there's the issue of his relevancy, but alas, by the time the next Smash comes around he'll probably be old enough to be considered retro, so whether he gets a new game or not, he'll either be recent enough or retro enough to be added.

Ah, wasn't aware Kojima had ownership instead of Sony so I assumed it counted
He really doesn't. It's entirely owned by Sony as far as we know.
The difference is that he probably made a deal with them when Sony agreed to fund his game that the game would release on PC shortly after the PS4 version. I mean, the PC version was announced even before the release of the PS4 version.

I'm guessing Sony was okay with it because Kojima is a big name (in other words, if said proposal came from a "random" director, they wouldn't have accepted) and because both sides always had a very good relationship since the MGS days.

You'd rather him than a guy with throwing axes who is riding a wyvern into battle? Or any of the crazy and wild battle styles that the weird and wonderful body-shapes of Pokémon could lend themselves to?

I could get behind this. Wario keeps WarioWare; Walugi overthrows him for a WaluigiLand series.

Well, the potential of those latter two rarely get tapped into. 2 Fire and Water Starters? Lots of swordies and Marth clones? I normally see those from those two series. Plus, I'm tired of all the milking, especially the FE milking because that's of a higher magnitude.

Yeah but the thing is Combee is a vastly more significant part of Pokémon's indentity than Waluigi is of Mario's. Doesn't mean you're wrong to love him, and I'm sure you could do something great with him if we got a more thorough character creator in Smash.

That is literally part of why it would bother me to see the second 'random lulz' pick be wasted on Mario when its already has (an admittedly great) one. Pokémon and Fire Emblem could put it to pretty epic use.

"Minor irrelevant filler character" is not how you describe one of the most popular characters in gaming's biggest franchise. You're not talking about Chargin' Chuck here.

Also I think it's completely backwards to want characters because they represent their own game rather than just because you like the character in a crossover fighting game and that's how you end up with a roster filled with boring protagonists. Smash has been featuring side characters literally since day 1, but I guess that's where speculation is right now in the era of the Fighter Pass.

All this Waluigi talk and I’m over here in the corner hoping we get a Goomba or Goombella. Goombas have always been my favorite Mario characters.

To be fair, none of the Mario characters we've got since post-Brawl have been bigger than Toad. Toad just seems to have been skipped.

And again to be fair, those other two characters are also almost entirely relegated to spin-offs as well. Kamek has a few mainline appearances, but they're pretty minor. Waluigi is a bigger presence in the overall series than either of them.

No one asked for my opinion on this matter but I would rather have Waluigi join smash than another Pokemon and especially another Fire Emblem character.
Well Waluigi popularity is genuine, and the popularity for characters from the other two is narrowed to a very small pool simply because we've been conditioned only to expect those kind of additions from those series. So you definitely wouldn't be alone.

What if they make a Waluigi version of Wario Land and promote it by upgrading Waluigi's Smash status? Not satire.
That'd be great but it seems hard enough to just get a Wario version of Wario Land these days.

I think it's unlikely without a new GS game. But I do think his popularity will endure. And I think in terms of fanbase favourites he'll stay up there with Waluigi and Geno. It just seems to grow from game to game.

I know people like to say "the finale is disappointing BECAUSE it's the finale", but Sakurai KNEW what he was doing when Byleth was the last fighter. That disclaimer before he showed the trailer, "Too many swordsmen", the smug look he had revealing the banner. He just knew dammit.

It's not that. It's because Nintendo's choice in characters are really safe picks. For Fire Emblem, they'll always pick the main character who ends up using a sword or the Starter pokemon of the most recent region.

I would be so nervous right now if Banjo still wasn't announced. I'm glad they were announced pretty early on all things considered.
Yeah, especially since Banjo was announced before Steve; nothing against the latter, but if Steve had been announced first, I would have been mad due to thinking he stole Banjo's spot, until Banjo got revealed, at least. Still, I consider it good they revealed Banjo first.

You just summarized my feelings perfectly. The large majority of my most wanted characters are just my favorites who usually tend to be either villains or side characters. You’ll never hear me putting any character down for not being iconic enough. I just dedicated an entire day to talking about a side character from a PS2 JRPG just because he’s my favorite video game character.

Honestly that would be a pretty fantastic pick and much more representative of the Mario franchise.

Yes, multi-million selling spin-offs where they are essential characters who are essential for instigating events.

Chargin' Chuck would be pretty awesome; I'll grant you. But I still think Fire-Emblem and Pokémon could make better use of the 'random character' slot.
