James Bond but... Smash Bros's identity has shifted since when he was a contender.

I’d argue that Pimple could work just as well if he was shrunken down a bit. If you ever played Battletoads and Double Dragon, all three play exactly the same and are the same size. It’s not like Smash hasn’t already shrunken a character to fit an alt. Just look at Radiant Dawn Ike.

Sakurai wanted to add Alucard, but there's the issue that is A...bunch of Castlevania content already being in the base game, unlike FFVII.

There's also Heihachi, who was planned back in Smash 4.

Yeah I realized that and edited my post quickly after lol. Rash and Zitz were still the same size in that game even though Rash is the smallest in other games. My point still stands on Battletoads and Double Dragon.

SF has all its ICONIC stuff, though I will admit it lacks a bit in content SF3 and upwards.

Untrue, this isn't a factor at all, otherwise an XB2 character would be off the table too. You can get a Clock Tower stage which is an iconic part of the series and also has music that's often considered Alucard's theme, SotN has 4 songs (None of which is the Horde's Festival smh) meaning that more can still be added, Spirits aren't a concern as again, XB2.

For example, both of Sonic's stages are grassy intro levels (which we already have plenty of, not just in regards to Sonic content).

Also, would Sonic's rushed moveset count as "lacking?"

It's a matter of quality vs. quantity. It has enough that I'm not sure Nintendo would prioritize it for DLC, but it's lacking in music, Sonic's moveset is rather bland compared to later characters, and the two stages it has are both grass-covered "Hill" starting stages.

Sonic the Hedgehog, with Shadow the Hedgehog

Characters like Ken Masters, Sephiroth, Steve, if they couldn't be added to the Base roster, could have just been be absent from the game, or in Ken's case, just a spirit. We also saw this happen in that Both Sephiroth and Steve had to wait till FP2 to become playable

Shadow doesn't have this luxury since he's been an Assist since Brawl and having his Assist be missing would be weird, especially if he wasn't able to be added to the Base roster. Sonic Content had to be Negotiated for in 2015, which is long time before FP1 was Negotiated for sometime after January of 2018, with FP2 starting Negotiations sometime in June of 2019.

Even if they don’t make it, it’s really cool that there is at least some hope now. They’ve made some cameos in Shovel Knight and Killer Instinct and even got a new game. I feel like this is the best chance they’ve ever had.

Honestly, if you want a big reaction for an E3 Smash reveal, it's tough to top Waluigi.

He's more recognizable to a general audience than 95% of Smash options simply because he's a Mario mainstay. Top it off with his seemingly infinite meme potential and the fact he's a popular request both inside and outside the hardcore speculation scene, I don't really see anyone aside from Crash, Master Chief, or Kratos making the splash he does.

I think ironic exposure to the character has led a lot of Smash Speculators to discount the genuine merits he brings. Which is odd, especially since so many people seem drawn to the biggest names possible when considering candidates.

Also the fact he’s an assist trophy is another point to him being a big reveal. Since so many people are adamant on ATs not being possible in the same game. That would cause a HUGE reaction!
