A Sony character feels like something that will happen in the next Smash game. While this is the friendliest Nintendo and Sony have been since the original falling out over the Playstation, their partnership is still in its infancy. It's clear both parties are still somewhat hesitant to adopt things like crossplay and bringing exclusives to other platforms, but stuff like MLB The Show '21 being multiplatform shows that things are warming up between the two.

Hopefully, by the time the next Smash and its DLC are being planned, Nintendo and Sony will be close enough to have a serious discussion about a Sony character in Smash.
I really want this to happened, all of my childhood is spent playing PlayStation game moreso than Nintendo console so my attachment is there. As for what character I want from Sony my mind goes to Ratchet and Clank since I play his game a lot as a kid, they probably going to have the most fun moveset with how many gadget they have across the series.

I just can't see Sony and Nintendo really making a deal for that to happen.

Moreover, I still doubt that characters from other console manufacturers can still make it in without some kind of Nintendo connection.

Keep in mind, Microsoft has Banjo and Steve. Both characters have intense Nintendo connections. Heck, one of them used to be owned by a Nintendo partner.

If someone like Master Chief (who'd be rad) made it in, I'd feel like its possible. But until then, Banjo and Steve are the exceptions to the norm, and not the norm.

Ignoring the odds that we get a sony character, who do you think it would be if we did? I think that Ratchet, Kratos, and Sackboy are the likeliest (in that order), with other possible candidates being Aloy, Kat, the Ghost of Tshushima guy, and Astro Bot being other possibilities. I doubt they'd go with a TLoU character, the Venn Diagram of Smash Fans and TLOU fans is basically a pair of glasses and I can't imagine a character from the game would be very interesting in Smash.

Kratos or Sackboy most likely. Leaning towards Kratos being he's pretty today Sony's answer and mascot as Mario is to Nintendo and Master Chief is to Microsoft to this day.

I mean, I doubt the Venn Diagrams any more separated than any other Sony franchise. What's so different about TLOU that makes it less likely to have crossover fans with Smash compared to GOW, Horizon, or Ratchet, etc?

Ngl, I feel like this is the last Smash where we'll be able to vouch for a most wanted. I feel like the next game is going to shake things up a LOT.

In other words, I think Ultimate is the final "traditional" Smash (I feel the same for Mario Kart 8).

In other other words, Ultimate is make or break for a lot of characters possibly. Even ones that would seem obvious for the next game such as Ring Fit Trainer or Akira Howard.

So hold on to your butts.

(This is me saying if there's no Sony in this game, I dont think its ever happening).

You know what franchise I think deserves a newcomer? Kirby. Doesn't even have to be Bandana Dee, I just think Kirby has a lot of untapped potential with its characters.

Adeleine, Daroach, Marx, Susie, Magolor, the list goes on.
^^^

Bandana Dee's my personal favorite of the bunch, followed by Magolor, but you can't go wrong with Kirby. If we added every Dream Friend from Star Allies to the roster, there'd be no complaints from me.

I thought you meant it would go full corporate and add characters zero people ever asked for like The last of us character or guy from call of duty
I dunno.

I think Joel or certain CoD characters would make a lot of people happy.

They're definitely not speculation regulars but they definitely got their fans.

I think the next game is going to be a reboot of sorts (I don't like using that word because it gets people rillied up). With this, I think said reboot would be more focused on giving veterans brand new movesets, changing up the gameplay more than expected, and creating a different kind of Smash experience (newcomers would still be there of course but they wouldn't be the main attraction this time around).

TLOU is a very un-Nintendo game. It has realistic characters in a very dark setting, with large amounts of story and relatively little gameplay. This isn't a bad thing, but people who prefer Nintendo games might not be big fans of the series. Ratchet is a very Nintendo series, being a cartoony platformer, so more Nintendo fans would like it. GOW and Horizon are in the middle, more or less.

I think how "innovative" the next smash is really just depends on Sakurais involvement. He talks a big game about "taking a break" and such other implications, but Nintendos never going to let the series go idle too long. I don't think they'll ever exclude him, but would gladly move ahead without him if they had to. It's also hard to see him ever letting his legacy left completely in the hands of others. I truly think the man is doomed to carry the burden of smash development, at least in some controlling capacity, for the rest of his life.

Regardless, it's going to have to come off as a reboot to the series. We'll never get a smash game of this scope again. I think a big part of smash's infamy is how, especially from a more casual stand point, smash has always been the same game, just bigger and better each time. You're going to have a really hard time justifying less content unless you market it as Smash taken to the next level.

I like the idea of a Smash reboot with fighters getting updated movesets and more content but I feel like that would be hated by fans due to everyone not being here.
(An entire chunk of the roster would be cut)

I feel like making the veterans that stay basically brand new characters, a well done and legitimate story mode and a major change to the way the game will play will be enough to get people's attention.

Just don't make it too polarizing.

Is this going to be the era where if I make a support thread for Ratchet or any other Sony exclusives it will immediately get shut down just like Chief back in the day?

I mean, people are still going to have most wanteds, that's just a key part of Smash. Cut Veterans will have significant followings, but that's in addition, not in place of complete newcomers.

Kratos can fit in Smash just fine. Yes, his games are gory, but for one, he's been in games without gore, like Soulcalibur Broken Destiny for the PSP and I believe he was even in a couple sports games like Hot Shots Golf, so he can toned down without issue. Two, much like Link and Samus, he's got a vast arsenal of power-ups, weapons and combos that he can use for a variety of moves. And three, Snake is also realistic so Kratos being realistic would not be an issue, not to mention we have characters based on Greek mythology very much like him.

Huh, I viewed Wii Fit and Duck Hunt as the WTF characters. Interesting that he doesn't consider Wii Fit a WTF at least conceptually (regardless of the success that was Wii Fit). She feels way weirder and "out of place" than Duck Hunt to me.
Wii Fit is more of an influence to the change of philosophy than another traditional chaotic choice every Smash game had and was lumped with Villager on that subject while both were subcategorized as similar additions to Fox and Falcon

Sakurai discussed about it too.

After checking the Newcomer Support Thread Directory, I noticed it doesn't have a section showing hypothetical emblems of new series. What emblems would each hypothetical new series get? Like, for starters, what would Halo's and God of War's be?
Those two are really easy actually since they have logos/symbols that are perfect for Smash.

Halo:

God of War:

An interesting one to ponder is Resident Evil. The Umbrella logo is easily the most iconic logo in the series; hell, I’d say it’s one of the most iconic things in the series period. Buuut, it’s the symbol of the villains & we’d probably get a playable hero instead. Would they still use the Umbrella logo or something the STARS logo instead?

The Last of Us is more story driven but it still has a lot of gameplay.
Having TLoU would be alright, idk why we have to fill the Nintendo mold that much, video games can be anything, TLoU has its fair share of sweet moment despite taking place in a zombie apocalypse filled with fungus. and I know Nintendo probably want the series because of the impact it has.

I still think it’d be the Umbrella logo. There‘s precedent there already. Simon and Richter use Dracula’s Castle despite it being the villains main call instead of say a whip or a cross or something.

I don’t think Last of Us would really fit Smash’s gameplay with how grounded those games are, even gameplay wise.

I know those games are incredibly beloved (I love the first myself). But Kratos, Ratchet & Drake are right there & fit in way better.

Kratos is ultra violent but man he has such an insane arsenal that would make him so much fun. He’s also the character that Sony has finally settled on as their poster boy after decades of swapping between mascots. God of War’s also recently became Sony’s best selling series... after Gran Turismo.

Ratchet & Clank is Sony’s longest running active series. Like Kratos, they also have an insane arsenal & they could easily be one one of the most unique characters in the game. Sony’s giving a big push to the new game so I imagine the series will continue to thrive for years to come.

Drake seems like a “normal” guy but he has enough tricks up his sleeve to make him stand out. Especially if they were able to implement his canonical “luck power”. Uncharted is Sony’s 3rd highest selling series after GT & GOW; Drake was Sony’s mascot for a bit but it looks like he’s given the title back to Kratos which might be permanent now.

Speaking of Castlevania, been watching some clips of the show on YouTube

Bro, free trial that *****, watch Castlevania, then cancel Netflix. Trust me it’s worth it and it’s overall pretty damn short compared to other shows.

yeah, it's overall 32 episodes between 4 seasons, so it'd be pretty quick to binge watch, which you'll probably do if you like it as much as I and probably many others did.

Kratos, the protagonist of the God of War series, had appeared in two fighting video games, PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale and Mortal Kombat (2011). But he coming as a newcomer to the Super Smash Bros. series. it will seem incredible but also interesting.
