I like forcing myself to see her extended leg always in front. So she keeps changing directions.

It's so...mesmerizing.

Etrian Odyssey 3, Shin Megami Tensei Strange Journey.
I would, however, note that both of these are dungeon crawlers, so if that's not your bag, I'd stay away.

I will emphatically co-sign The World Ends With You, and add my recommendations as well:

Bleach: The Third Phantom (SRPG, plays similar to Fire Emblem)
Final Fantasy Tactics A2 (Not as good as the first IMO, but still good)
Radiant Historia (RPG, awesome battle system, story and soundtrack.)
SMT: Devil Survivor
SMT: Devil Survivor 2 (Both SRPGs, heavily character-centric)
Super Robot Taisen OG Saga: Endless Frontier (Hard to find a copy of, though)
Valkyrie Profile: Covenant of the Plume (SRPG)

@Omni and everyone else that considers themselves an RPG fan needs to play Child of Light. I'll give a little mini review since I just beat the game.

*Minor Spoilers*

Plot is the generic child of light goes to defeat the dark queen. However, the story ie the presentation of the plot is fantastic. Storybook water colors make the world feel alive and are gorgeous to look at. The color grade is mostly green and blues with some brown. The backgrounds are gorgeous too, especially when there's things other than sky to look at. The MC has a rendered 3D model for movement but dialogue is presented as 2D watercolor. Basically, amazing visuals that are pleasing to look at. Also, all the dialogue is in rhyme scheme which was a lot of fun to read.

The soundtrack for this game is amazing as well. There wasn't a single track I didn't like. I LOVE the first battle theme and the first level up theme; there are two that play depending on where you're at. And the major boss theme is incredible, I've had the drums from that song stuck in my head, it really gets you pumped up. I figuratively cannot get those drums out of my head.

All the characters were unique and had a little backstory to let you know who they are; some more than others but ultimately the game is about Aurora so it's mostly focused on her journey and not really the motivations for party members, other than the fact that they want to help her. There are collectible notes in the game that give further backstory and are worth collecting though it's not necessary.

For gameplay, movement felt great, especially flying, which you spend the majority of time doing. I had no problems controlling my character; though since this was an RPG designed to be two players, some people have complained that they have difficulty controlling Igniculus. I played it on the vita but it still felt intuitive to use.

The battle system is amazing as well; I've never played a game with a system like this. It's semi-realtime ie turn based and real-time combined depending on where you on the timeline. Igniculus is used to either blind enemies which slows their movement on the timeline turn system or can be used to heal you for a minor amount. Every battle was unique due to different combination and amount of enemies. Bosses were especially fun and gratifying to beat. Attacks are weighty which makes the hits feel satisfying. Some people had trouble with the MP gating; but personally I had not problems between the level ups which put you back at max HP/MP, the wish system, and MP potions, I never found myself in need of Mana. Also, you can't heal with skills outside of battle, you either have to use items or the wish system. I liked this a lot because it made the damage you take from regular encounters meaningful enhancing the difficulty of the game.

As for skills, each character has 3 skills trees that you can go down and level up granted different stats and skills and giving them unique roles to fill on your team. I found use for every playable character, though when you refine your strategies you might find yourself having preferences.

Equips in this game come in the form of gems that you have to craft that grant different bonuses depending on where they're slotted and how refined they are. It's based on the colors of light; shocking I know, and a lot of fun to experiment with.

TL;DR

+Amazing story
+Awesome visuals
+Incredible soundtrack
+Deep and rewarding battle system.
+Solid movement and controls
+Great game balance; I played on hard mode which was great. The game felt like a challenge but not a grind; it didn't feel arbitrarily difficult. I can't speak for normal but if you want a challenge to get that feeling of gratification when you beat a boss and the game, hard mode is the way to go. You can switch difficulty at any point in the game in the options menu if it ever feels too difficult.

-Igniculus was difficult to control; personally I had no problems with this on the vita but a lot of other people mentioned troubles with this that I felt it was worth noting.
-Sound skips; in battle with certain enemies the sound would sometimes glitch out; this rarely happened to me, maybe like once or twice and this might be a problem only relavant to the vita
-Spiders @ BSL BSL :(

So yeah, I would recommend this game to anyone who likes RPGs. It's a good 10-20 hours of game play for only $15 or possibly less depending on what system you pick it up for.

I played the first few hours of Child of Light and put it down. Something about that game just really didn't click for me, and I would absolutely consider myself an RPG guy. The battle system isn't nearly as interesting to me as others have made it out to be. It's not bad, but I'm the kind of guy who's happy with a very traditional turn-based system as long as I feel like I have a decent array of options at my disposal. I never felt like my characters had many legitimately unique and valid abilities to pick from and being on a weird timer of sorts wasn't a good substitute for move variety for me. The rapid rate of level up and the incremental upgrades you get in the skill trees just made it seem like progression, and specifically the choices I was making in building the characters, basically didn't matter at all. They never felt like they were getting much better, nor like they had any really clear advantages over each other in battle. Like yeah, one's more elemental magic based and one has more options for healing yadda yadda, but you can equip characters with things to give them elemental charges, and the world is lousy with health orbs, even in battle. And the rhyming thing is a cute idea on paper, but in practice, it was mostly just kind of obnoxious since so little of the dialogue was even written to be all that poetic. It always felt very clumsy. They try to kind of have fun with it with the one character who always dodges the obvious rhyme, but it mostly just served to showcase how quickly the rhyming idea had exhausted itself.

I don't know if the game just doesn't kick in properly until later, but my understanding is that Child of Light's a pretty short game as it is. It feels like it develops at quite a clip, based on how quickly you level and how quickly you recruit party members and such, so I felt like I'd gotten a good taste of it. It just wasn't able to hook me, and I expected to like it based on the praise it had been getting. But then this wouldn't be the first game to be hyped like this that I just couldn't fall in love with (I won't mention any others since they might get me banned from the boards).

anyway mac's drunk that's funny

Who was the last character you recruited? Also what difficulty did you play on?

With regards to the rhyme scheme, literally only that character doesn't follow it and she's the first person you get in your party. I don't think it ever exhausted itself.

I have some stuff to say about the battle system depending on your answers.

I was going to gift a month to you, but Zen decided to forgo proper channels and beat me to it. Oh well.

@Handorin will get his, though.
