The dock has replaced my desktop for linking my apps (good old XP days).
App on 'desktop' reminds me of the default setup on most current gen mobile phones.
Although, I personally like to select my apps via a scrolling dock like I did on the PSP.

Also my desktop is cluttered with files, just not applications. When I have time I do categorize my files, but if they aren't work related then my categorization tends to be rather arbitrary in order to just get some consolidation and organization on hand. Also yeah, I always default configure everything to be downloaded on my desktop. I never really liked the concept of pooling my files into the Downloads folder because I never bothered to find a convenient way to hotlink to it to double check that the save went alright.

Pin things you need to the taskbar, keep everything on your desktop in a folder instead, and pin that folder to your taskbar. It's one additional click to pull up the window that is your new clutterspace, and your desktop stays beautiful and clean.

But what's the point in having a perfectly clean desktop. Do you really love seeing your background image that much. Nine times out of ten I'm going to have a browser window taking up around 90% of my screen.

Also, how does anyone power write i.e. research reports without using dual screen. Research texts on one screen and writing program on the other. The only alternative for me was to print almost all my sources so I had a text copy and spread out my sources all over my room for organized access.

Well I think it's remarkable that we live in a society that affords each of us our own desktops, and that we can each customize them as we wish.
For income invested, I would rate desktops as the top item I am aware of that gives anyone the greatest rate of return. It's laughable that you put in $300-$400 for a desktop that will last you two, three years and compare that to how much you pay for rent, utility, and other basic human goods. I find it alarming that the price of sustaining human life is incomparably large compared to the price of sustaining our amusement.

What's the point of a background if you don't look at it?

don't typically see the point in these but I've just been overcome with the urge to share

For the record, I'm not specifically against "clutter" on a desktop; it's just that literally any app I would ever want to quickly access and more is already in my dock. Though there is something pleasing about the cleanliness, I think.

I agree with soup. It's just... Like what's the convenience of having an icon free desktop? What are even the pros?

Edit: coming from a guy who seldom uses his comp for things other than internet browsing, homework, or composing music.

I use Fences to keep the clutter to a minimum, but I use Rainmeter because I can't stand a desktop with nothing going on.

It's not about "keeping it cleaner looking" for me. It's about keeping stuff where I can find it. I feel like when there's a lot of stuff on my desktop, it's less likely to be organized.

Desktop is the place I dump a file if I don't know where to otherwise save it. That made my desktop very ugh, plus it came in the way of pretty pictures.

Being good with Rainmeter can make some godlike desktops though.

new rotation

But there's an order to which they get saved on the desktop, which is chronological. Hell if you're anal enough you can go ahead and arrange em yourself. It's literally as easy on yourself as minimizing whatever you feel like keeping open for some reason and clicking from the desktop instead of searching through folders. Idk, I guess it's just differences in preferences.

What part of "place where I dump something when I don't know where to dump it" is hard to understand? I have an image folder, it's not for crap like that.

Seems like the picture labeled "vibackground" could go into some kind of, I don't know, IMAGE folder, maybe one specifically for BACKGROUNDS.

That's also another reason I keep icons on my desktop. So that in the rare event someone uses my computer, they don't go digging in places they don't belong.
