New Damage Meters

So after a painstaking wait for the dojo site, we currently have not much to go on (I am sure this will change quickly). The one big change is that I have seen is the damage meters, character profiles come next to them. I don't really know what to make of this...is it going to obscure any of the fighting? Also they don't have player specific places now, for example Link and Marios are centred in a 1v1 but in a FFA the meters look normal.

Anyway...thoughts y'all?

I kinda liked the little icons. I wonder how stocks will be represented, almost certainly as numbers I suppose.

i dont know why there is a camera problem in melee which wasnt there in SSB64. If you are really close to your opponent you cant really see whats behind you. I've rolled in into bob-ombs so many times because of that. and the damage meters do meddle in the way. they need to become transparent or smaller was the view becomes bigger.

In the ? Box that Mario must hit.
Wow, this does not deserve its own thread. Just because there is such little news doesn't mean you have to go into detail about everything we got. Its plain out insignificant.
Wow, you have problems. It's the only real news we had in 6 months, so it's all we have to go on. That, and it's just a conversation piece, not a major sticky thread like your acting like we believe it should be.

I hope those new, bigger icons don't get in the way while we're playing. They look like it'd be harder to see... overall though, I like the pictures. I hope they change color/costume per picture...

Miis will be in there. When you play online I bet any money that your Mii will appear in that box.

I like the idea of having the character pics down the bottom, just to help noobs remember who there playing as :p

Also, is it just me or does the sun in the morning on battlefeild look like a random purple orb?

No matter how many times I see it, I still can't stand the new Fox look....
Gasp! Me too! He needs his long snout.

On a more relevant note, I found that visbility was fine in SSBM until you started using stocks on cramped levels (Dream fountain (name?) was especially confusing because of all the reflections.) I'm waiting for a screenshot of the stocks before the "oh noes" set in.

Baha man im stupid pikachus cleary doing the moves animation as well :p

I don't like how the characters symbols get covered up a bit either aye, and it all makes it seems like the stock count is going to make everything bulky and annoying.

The use of the face boxes is obviously not primarily for displaying the face of who you're playing. It's for displaying your Mii during online or local matches. The same goes for the name beneath the percentage.

I did a really quick and sloppy mockup using the image provided earlier in the thread of what I mean.

As you can see here, the Miis and names would fit better under the percentiles than floating above characters. The most notable reason to do this would be to prevent the Cloaking Device or other invisible effects from becoming useless due to a floating name pointing at where you are at all times, even when invisible.

If I'm right, then this is a good step for the series, and I think more people will use the personal profile option if it's linked to their Mii and no longer causes gameplay awkwardness.

I hope you're right! Hopefully Nintendo goes for the hastily doodled look too. Heh, the Miis in the image could show facial expressions depending on how well they're doing (crying as the fly off or have just fallen off, fear as they realise that they have 250% and are fighting 3 opponents with 10% etc.)

Hmm. I hope that either it gets used like that, to display the Mii, or that it's just there as a placeholder until they find something better, because, honestly, I hate hate hate hate hate the way that looks.

You know... since there's going to be a significant jump in number of characters from the same series. They needed to distinguish the characters/percents for them. Instead of say 6 zelda characters with a triforce, the triforce also has a picture of the character beside it.

Your Mii idea is stupid. And no, I won't beat around the bush. I get right to the point.
Wow, quick to the personal attacks. Internets sure is serious business.

It's not only my idea, it was mentioned earlier in the thread as well by someone else, and I'm sure others have come to this conclusion on their own as well. I merely provided an illustration of my theory.

I don't see the purpose of a character portrait on it's own, but as a placeholder for when a user isn't playing their Mii profile to track their wins, losses, etcetera, then it makes sense.

I wouldn't immediately put down and throw aside your theories on anything, and I don't even know you. So let's chill a little and explain why exactly you think it's a stupid idea.

Do you dislike the portraits in general? Would tracking stats linked to a Mii online be a bad idea? It's being used in Mario Strikers in a similar fashion.

Constructive comments, those are the good ones. Do you have those?

Why do you just assume that the little icons are gone. These modes could easily be time modes, as it shows the +1 and -1 icons. SSBB isn't finished just yet, what makes you think they could have just changed the icons, and did not put them in the screens.

I think we'll have both Miis and little icons. Having just a number there to represent your stock won't look nice anyway. And why else put the image of the characters there if not to also allow the space to show your Miis when online (and also differentiate between characters with the same icons).

Wasn't a personal attack, unless the idea was personal O.o

And I noticed it was mentioned by someone else, and when everyone else backed the idea, thats when I had to state my opinion on the idea.

for now the character portraits are a pretty good idea i think.

it'll probably be easier to notice at glance which character has how much damage (more useful in a team game) rather than having to remember player numbers and decipher only symbols.

you know useful for fighting teams that use two characters from the same "kingdom."

I hope they at least change the portraits... or maybe make it customizable. Pretty, drawn instead of modeled character portraits, that, I could live with. This way, it looks like a bad photo manip.

Doesn't anyone else agree that it looks like crap? o_0

if the camera is going to be like melee then i dont like the portraits. but if they fixed that problem then it looks like it will be realy sweet. i am interested to see how the stock will be displayed. i realy hope it isnt the numbers, i hate playing stock over 5 for this reason...i know they symbols happen at 5 but still.

cant wait for tomarows update!

the size of the letters compared to the
amount of space for each plater leads
me to believe that alot more letters will
be available for the 'name entry'

and that's good news to me

i also think they will have kingdom hearts charachters or a stage because they have music for this... also they have fire emblem music, mario golf, a metroid prime level, animal crossing & pickmin ...thats wat i think because why would u put music 4 a game if u cant use anything from that game

The damage meters don't look much bigger at all to me, in Melee the percentage numbers were quite HUEG, and even with the character pics the new ones look almost smaller to me. Maybe I'm wrong?
