Although the point of this thread is to fall completely into bias, I'm still going to base my picks on the resources the dev team had at the time (that is, I'm not replacing a clone with a non-clone, etc.).

I'd honestly keep the Original 12 exactly the same, so:

Rare buyout did not happen till a couple months after Melee hit its finally territory. HM to Conker who was excluded since bad fur day probably released too close to Melee to be included.

If Smash 6 has to be some sort of soft reboot here's my biased roster.

I limited the roster to about 60, roughly the same amount as Smash 4's final roster.
Hot take(?) but I think most of the Smash roster hold up well. Every character is getting some touch ups to an extent. Really everyone should just get a 5th special, a Shield Special specifically. But my focus is adding new faces.
Every previously repped series gets to keep at least one character, but no more than 4. (There are 2 exceptions and they are exactly who you think they are)
I cut all 3rd parties, this reboot is going back to its roots as a celebration of Nintendo. We can add them back in Smash 7.
Subject to change the minute Monolithsoft reveals their new IP.

Rare buyout did not happen till a couple months after Melee hit its finally territory. HM to Conker who was excluded since bad fur day probably released too close to Melee to be included.

Slippy & ROB 64 & Mii Team are either reworked or exclusive to the Wii U edition. I dont agree woth completely scrapping a fighter due to 3DS limitations.

No new echoes in base roster (although they are split off in there own row now) but the top row of DLC are all echoes instead of adding veterans since all are here except Rare.

Thought of some changes to my rosters.

Black Knight replaces Micaiah
Decided that were a magic based moveset is cool we did add Zelda in the same game plus Black Knight is just a good opportunity to add an iconic villain from the series.

Robin replaces Tiki
With Micaiah gone it would make sense to add Robin with the mage moveset Micaiah would have had.

Byleth Almost Replaced
Before adding Black Knight i did consider adding Flame Emperor over Byleth but that no longer seems necessary.

Twelve replaces Ruby Heart
I added Ruby Heart since i want someone to rep all Capcom fighting games. I thought of a better idea being Twelve from SF3. Were they have not appeared in a Capcom Vs. game they can canonically shape shift & mimic other fighters. Taking some creative liberties we can have them do this for different characters/moves from various Capcom fighters & series like the Ditto concept i also had. This would represent what i am going for better imo.

Dante replaces Monika
Dante overall replaces Monika. I still want Monika in Smash but realized she may not be as impactiful here with visual novels already being here through Ayumi. I dont think a dedicated horror or indie rep is enough given the potential humble origins or horror elements other series already here may have. Dante is admittedly a stretch for me since ive only played the mediocre at best DMC2 but from what ive seen of other series games & the character himself i am very optimistic he will become a favorite, plus at the very least the series was a pioneer & influenced other games i do really like. Also getting the Dante people wanted over PS Allstars would be great to see the reaction of.

Kiryu replaces Majima
Majima is still my favorite character & I have always liked Kiryu but after playing Kiwami 2 & most of 3 i feel lime ive grown to like Kiryu even more & feel a little weird putting Majima over him. I would also swap his timing with one of the Capcom reps delaying him to an Ultimate Fighter Pass which makes more sense as it would match closer to the franchises explosion in popularity outside Japan (after the international release of 0). Where i have taken risks on the potential of 1st party series, 3rd party is another ballgame & would be weird to have too niche of series considering all other options.

Giga Mac replaces King Hippo (DK Echo)
The moves work either way imo but Giga Macs general stance would be closer to DK plus it kind of gives us the series protag.

Krystal replaces Veronica
Veronica cant be a Micaiah echo if Micaiah missed the roster to begin with. Slippy & ROB 64 are our Ice Climbers like rep but make it in 3DS with ROB 64 now being a floating head working like a mix of Nana & Luma. Decided to not let that concept die & use Krystal as a Slippy echo to keep that playstyle in Ultimate with this new spot (something i almost did initially anyway)

Alph replaces President
This is something ive been back & forth on anyway (with Louie also in the mix).

Hestu replaces Skull Kid
As much as I like Skull Kid the timing (around BotW) always fealt off. Combine that with Goron & Zora Link already repping Majoras Mask & i decided to shop around. Think Hestu would be an interesting choice with the large roll Koroks had in BotW, ties to the iconic Great Deku Tree, & standout design & moveset potential.

Dingodile/Ayane replace Coco/Kasumi Alphas

This was honestly influenced by a post WarioWarioWario made. I always pictured a Coco echo or Cortex to get in after Crash. I do now think Dingodile could be the best 2nd choice. Hes popular, timing is good (around Crash 4), & has fun moveset potential. He isnt the most expected new series fighter but makes a lot of sense making him a great choice imo.

Decided to swap with Ninja Gaiden/Dead or Alive with Ayane being added as a Hayabusa echo with Crash series now getting the 2nd unique fighter from a 3rd party series role.

The Sim replaces Farmer (SoS/HM)
I like both series. IDK, Sims wasnt really on my radar before but do like the idea & is seemingly a much bigger series. We already have EA in with Mass Effect plus i feel like both these fighters would appeal to a similar audience anyway.

Melia replaces Lora
Honestly forgot Xenoblade DE was out as earlier as it was so a rep here could make more sense than a Torna Expansion character. Melia makes sense with Future Connected being a big selling point for DE plus I think she would stand out & be more unique than Shulk (or Lora for that matter)
