Hi CT, I'll be moving to Stamford this summer. Anyone (Melee players) live around there? It's basically right next to NYC.

Some of you may recognize me; last summer I spent some time in Stamford and posted in here a few times. I played some lolfi with Jam, Noodles, and maybe some other people. But I quit Brawl a while ago... let's play Melee. :)
zomg, a player in stamford!? where in stamford? when in stamford? how in stamford?

RE: Eminem

He's mad talented, I just can't really get past the fact that I generally dislike the subject matter of his songs.

I used to listen to Eminem back in middle school. Then I stopped liking rap around high school. I was finding myself. LOL I listened to Jin for fun sometimes.

I haven't done any homework yet this semester, thank god for snow days. LOL, I will actually be playing catch up this weekend.

Hopefully I can convince my parents to buy a new computer, I can't afford one. -_-

Lyrical quality is a lot more important when talking about rap artists... for obvious reasons I think
Eminem's flow is ridiculous.
I think the "flow" is more of a vocal thing than a lyrical thing. Rhyming is a vocal thing.

I mean there are plenty of rappers that talk about money, sex, and drugs who have a fantastic sound and nobody really questions their legitimacy as rappers.

In my opinion, rap, as well as any music genre, is determined by its sound more so than the message/lyrics. Rap songs do seem to have a trend toward specific topics, but that is more the emotions involved with the music.

But I have never been a huge fan of rap and hip-hop so my opinion is a little uneducated.

Point: Eminem's music has a great sound to it.

Yeah I am kinda of the same way. (Especially when Scott and Scar like worshiped him a few months ago.) But you have to admit some of his stuff was catchy.

^THIS^THIS^THIS^THIS^THIS^THIS^THIS^THIS^THIS^THIS^

At least to me.

Give me Common, The Roots, and Mos Def over rappers with more ridiculous flows any day. Like, I still enjoy hearing someone who has ridiculous skills at pulling amazing rhymes out of their ***, but I typically enjoy more meaningful lyrics than impressive lyrical craftsmanship.

Then again, when I think about it, I really enjoy Jurassic 5, Wu Tang and the album Blackout! by Method Man and Redman almost exclusively for sound rather than the content, so I guess it might have something more to do with Eminem's sound not really appealing to me. Like PoF, you said you like JMT, but I can't stand listening to Vinnie at all, he's just annoying to listen to IMO.

Well, especially since they live in Philly, where there is so much good hip hop, and they haven't really expanded their borders of interest in the genre beyond Eminem and Afro Man -_-.

How about when eminem was just known as M+M

let's get serious his flow is ridiculous whether you want to admit or not he can spit it better then 90 percent of the rappers out there.

/clever reference while defending.

well, I've already said that I think Eminem is mad talented.

But at the same time, how are you going to measure if one "can spit it better then [sic]" anyone else? it's not like that's a purely objective measurement of one's skills. Essentially, the crux of the matter is that I don't generally like listening to Enimem's music, while I do like listening to other Hip Hop.

To be honest, this is the only rap I listen to.
"Including MC Hawking, Optimus Rhyme" lol

I like Eminem. He spits his **** pretty well and while some of the subject matter on which his music sheds light on has a tendency to be unwholesome, there are some diamonds in the rough. "White America" is a good song that outlines societal corrosion within our shores.

Of course, it's hard to get past some of his more contemporary songs ("Real Slim Shady," etc). But even those songs are catchy and infectious; I admit to listening and liking some of the stuff. But as far as rap/hip-hop goes, there are better artists out there. I'm particularly fond of Immortal Technique.

>_> Yes, most of Immortal Technique's stuff is the same old "eff the government" schtick but it is very well-written. Plus his free-styles are absolutely amazing.

Meeeee~!

Also;
I had a mad weird dream last night.

For some reason Sandra and I and a group of other unrecognizable kids were all rounded up for what looked like a military-esque hike through the woods and/or camping trip.

Except we were told to eat our last meals for the weekend before we left, unless we wanted to go hunting while we were camping that is.

And we were only allowed to bring a small container[About the size of the original Gameboy] of supplies of whatever we wanted.

The next day we were all meeting up and getting ready to go, and I look in my container to see what I had packed, and I saw a small water bottle and a huge-*** pile of "PowerThirst Energy Pills".

>_> Yea. They were huge, yellow, and said "POWERTHIRST" on them.

<_< I literally picked one up and said, "Wow, this would probably make me uncomfortably tech skilled."

Then I took one, and I was like "HOLY **** I JUST SWALLOWED LIGHTENING!".

And I had lots of energy and I handed some out to the rest of the group, who after taking them each said other lines from the Smash version of PowerThirst.

It was sweet. I thought it really happened and then I realized halfway through math class that it really didn't because I was thinking, "Where did I get those pills?"

-DD

EDIT// HOLY **** I JUST REALIZED THAT THE GUY LEADING THE TRIP WAS ISAI LOLOLOLOL.

flow is a very important part of hip hop

eminem is easily one of the most feared battle rappers and freestylists of all time.

Poffy you still dont know what you're talking about. sure he talked about hating his wife n stuff, but he def did it well and his lyrics were still good and somehow you can't see that, kind of like most of your arguements where you focus on one thing (gta 4 being the "same thing", some random video of mashahis roy) but still dont see the overall picture (gta4 is still a good game, roy sucks). others seem to recognize that em's talented, but dont like him for personal reasons. you have this habit of saying "only thing x does is y" which is extremely scrubby and in many ways ignorant.

do you kno what you're talkin about? no. why the **** do you have young buck on ur list, out of curiosity? the least successful member of gunit? really?

as for the rest of you, i honestly dont think you ever "listened" to his lyrics to say they arent great. if you don't like the subject matter, thats fine, bt to say his lyrics arent good within said subject matter isnt something i'm gonna let you get away with.

pakman, music made past a certain point in the 90s became all about overall sound rather than content, which is sad, but people like what they like. hard to really stop it. people do question the legitimacy of rappers all the time. it just doesnt get blown up much cuz again, ppl are gonna like what they like

I disagree with this. Perhaps it has become more pronounced throughout the 90's and recently, but pop music almost always hinged on sound rather than content. There will always be music out there that has content for those who are willing to look, and there will always be a load of shallow but catchy music flooding the radio.

EDIT: Not to say that they are mutually exclusive, I just find that repetitive and simple lyrics tend to be one of the calling cards of pop music, whereas the more mentally provocative lyrics don't tend to end up blowing up in the pop scene.

well of course, if you look you will find it, but commercialism doesnt make it readily available.

it seems like we're saying the same thing.... unless i'm reading wrong

This is entirely false, I listen to Colbie Caillat religiously so I don't count but GOTM and Yayo had in depth convos about a ton of artists I had never even heard of. We were plenty aware of good hip hop, eminem is just really good.

Every time I was at GOTMs place with you guys, it was only Zeplin, Wolfmother, Afro Man, and Eminem. I honestly don't remember ever hearing any other artists at his place :p.

Get at The Roots. See them live, they are unbelievable.

After writing this post I realize, it doesn't really go along with the current thread direction, but **** it.... This is the CT thread.

Am I the only one who finds Red Hot Chili Pepper's lyrics like really strange? Like they are a talented group with catchy tunes and great music, but sometimes I feel like there lyrics are nonsense.

I think I prefer a lot of classic rock stuff because of catchy good music with generally meaningful lyrics.

I prefer bands like the Who, the Stones, and Queen because they have phenomenal music matched with great lyrics. I like bands like Boston for almost entirely music and artists like Billy Joel and Tom Petty for lyrics. (A lot of Billy Joel stuff is pretty depressing and/or sleazy in content, but he uses language in a way to make it a classic.)

People praise bands like Led Zepplin and Pink Floyd, but I find a lot of their music to be confusing and overly "trippy". Don't get me wrong, I really like Zep, but I feel like they are overrated.

I personally saw him combo Fox and Marth enough in Shadow Claw. I truly do not understand why people make multiple combo videos. You make a combo video to say to people, "Look what I can do. Look what I can bring to the table in competitive play." When you make another combo video its almost as if you are bragging about how good you are in my opinion. No offence to Scar but I do not see not see a reason to produce another combo video. What is going to be different about this video as opposed to I Killed Mufasa? Less knees and more bair kills? Less dairs and more forward b spikes? I think we were all beyond impressed with I Killed Mufasa and do not need to see further proof of how sexy your falcon is. Once again, I'm not bashing you or insulting you Scar...I'm just saying I don't understand why people release multiple combo videos of themselves. I think tribute combo videos are fun and dandy though because they are made by other smashers as a sign of respect towards a group of smashers or one in particular. Examples- I.A.M.R.O.B.O.T, The Worlds Best, PC For President.

GTa-All video games are the same god ****ing **** thing.

Sports games-Every year the same controls but different players
Shooting Games-Different levels, different weapons, same concept
Fighting Games-SF, MK, Capcom V SNK, Tekken--You all fight and beat eachother up and play another round.
Puzzle games-connect the dots, shapes, whatever.
Sequels of the same games are the same ****ing thing too Sonic, Mortal Kombat, GTA, NBA Live, Call of Duty, Guitar Hero, Halo. Every game is branched from something else or some other idea and is not original or special.

Music-Don't get all mad just because I don't like Eminems lyrics. Rap is all about how the music makes you feel and the mood it puts you in. If rap music does not carry a good beat, I won't listen to it because that is what rap is to me, a form of motivation while I'm at the gym or if I'm pissed off.

If you're such a smart person than please tell me the major differences between GTA 4 and GTA San Andreas and I'll start taking you more seriously because I'm pretty sure they are both the same ****ing idea with new places to walk around, people to beat up, a few new cars, and the same missions but in a different order. Oh yeah I forgot, you can answer your cell phone and play horrible multiplayer games online. My bad.

Oh yeah, and your comment about why I like Young Buck-That was ********. Who cares how successful someone is? What does that have to do with personal interest? Nothing.

I think Zeppelin is beyond overrated as well

Symphonic Zeppelin is incredible. London Orchestra all day.

Tool-No Quarter. ****ing listen to it. Amazing.

I am one of the biggest Pink Floyd fans you will ever meet though. I've read some books on them, own every album, and really know a lot about where there music was derived from. I still think Mother from the Wall live is probably my favorite guitar solo of all time. Most Floyd fans despise anything after Roger Waters left (The Division Bell, The Final Cut) but I find that stuff to be beyond awesome as well. If you haven't listen to the album Animals....do it. Arguably the best. and I can't stand wannabe pink floyd fans who praise The Wall and Wish You Were Here when they do not even know what The Wall is about haha

Why are you on a video game forum if you think all games within a genre are the same. Why did you decided to play melee and not stick with 64 if they are the same? Tekken poses a different challenge then Street Fighter. Tetris poses a different challenge than Dr. Mario. Halo poses a different challenge than Counter Strike. Games within genre's can be COMPLETELY different.

Saying that 3D fighters and 2d fighters are the same because they both involve people beating each other up is ********. I played Tekken competitively before smash and I would consider myself mediocre at 3rd Strike and all three games require immensely different styles, strategies and general approaches to the game.

I always found the GTA games similar, but you can't broaden that statement to genres.

Pakman what do you think of the lyrics for Dani California lol

Linkin Park is the best band imo
RHCP honestly haven't had lyrics that I actually try to understand since Under the Bridge. I actually still love them though, they're mad fun to sing in Rock Band and I like their musical style a lot.

Linkin Park draws too much hate. I don't get why some people get so violently upset when hearing that someone else likes Linkin Park. I don't really love Linkin Park, but at the same time I at least find their style interesting and they seem to be competent musicians. Same thing with Coldplay (**** all yall, Coldplay's really good).

RE: Pink Floyd and Zeplin

Zeplin is great. I don't really find them too trippy or out there or anything, it's just classic awesome. I can't listen to Pink Floyd anymore. I find their music pretentious, boring, depressing, and all in all I think they took themselves way too seriously.

Dani California seems to be a song about the singer's runaway criminal mother who was making her way around the South making trouble and trying to avoid it.

I get the sense of more than mother/son connection between the singer and mother but it isn't explicitly stated.

She is killed at the end.

Also, Reanimation by Linkin Park made me lose so much respect for them. My favorite band right now is probably Zebrahead.

I find most music to be terrible, or at least not worthy of listening to over and over again. This is probably because I do not explore enough and listen to whatever's out there. I haven't heard of most of the bands you guys are arguing about.

And I've found that whenever I DO find a good song and decide to listen to other songs of the same band, they mostly are bad. Most bands just aren't consistent enough for my tastes. I'll like one or two songs from each new band I listen to. Linkin Park is the first (and one of the only) bands I found where I like MORE THAN ONE of their songs, which for me is just unreal. There are a lot of LP songs I don't like as well, but the good outnumbers the bad, so I consider them my favorite band. Plus Numb is one of my favorite songs of all time.
