It's rare that you'll need a calculator for just the basic trig functions; though, I do remember there being some really specific answer ones. (like length of sides of irregular triangles, same with angles)It's when you know one angle, then have the length of one side.
He was dead on with the soh-cah-toa thing. I just don't remember how to do it. I know you need a calculator though.
Anyway. SOH= Sine (opposite over hypotenuse), CAH= Cosine (Adjacent over Hypotenuse), TOA= Tangent (Opposite over adjacent).
If you aren't working with 30, 60, 90 or 45,45,90 triangles, it's best that you use a calculator. You can also remember the 30, 60, 90 as a 3,4,5 triangle, if that helps at all.
