as much as i like this list, the UMB bi-weeklies carry a lil too much weight in this list. Anther is a BEAST with pikachu which kind of unbalances the rankings. Pikachu's definitely a bit too high imo.

edit: the NYC weeklies are a good source of tourny info. Huge turnouts, big names

If you can provide me with NYC Weeklies results and characters, I'd greatly appreciate it. I was considering doing so, except that it was way too disorganized for me to sift through.

Anther has won one out of four tourneys. There are Pikachu placings in several other tournaments.

maybe, but anther has placed 2nd twice in the bi-weeklies, 4th once, and 2nd in the digital ops one. those are pretty good placings and considering top 8 has a lot of value, anther's pika is a beast.

not trying to hate on pika, i use him myself. i'll wait to see how the rest turns out, it's still early.

Ankoku your doing an amazing job, don't try and change it because of representation, its perfectly fine to see metaknight and snake in the top 2 even though they outnumber every other character 20/1.

In fact for people who think this fact scews the list, try and see it this way, you have 100 people playing metaknight, 100 people playing snake, 20 people playing Sonic, 1 person playing Mario, now you have 2 characters who have 100 minds working on tactics vs the other 3 and eachother, you only have 20 minds working on Sonic, and only 1 mind trying to break Mario, so baring huge advantages in the character match up itself snake and metaknight obviously have more advanced styles of play and more minds and hands working on making it even higher, it's bound to make those characters better. Sure it won't change their potential but it will help them peak sooner so they will be better longer, also if this game isn't really shallow then, like melee you won't see anyone stop improving regardless of how much has been discovered.

Well technically all you need is ONE great mind to show the potential of a character.

And yes I think it's pretty obvious that popularity is messing up results somewhat.

Not so much Snake and MK because they really DO deserve to be the top 2, but....I mean Sonic shouldn't be that high and neither should Wario for that matter and I think we all know this.

And of course Anther is seriously messing things up with that Pikachu of his.

Not that being good is bad, but when you want accurate results you must also take into account that someone like Anther may be far above the rest of the competition in his area and that it might not even matter who he plays since he would win anyway.

As I said this ting will be truely accurate when 3 or 4 months go by.

I mean hell I..before I said I was surpised that Mart hwent up, but I wasn't ahppen when he was winning all the tourneys at the beggining either. He won becuase he was easy to pick and he was the most similar to his melee counter part, but when other characters were found out to be just as good or better, Marth suffered a backlash and he dropped off the map.

Being overplayed is just as bad as being underplayed when it comes to accurate representation.

Well, typically a popular character is popular because it seems to be a good character. There are also isolated things like Anther and Pika Pika consistently doing well with Pikachu, essentially singly representing a character enough to take it to a high rank in my list.

Besides, how am I supposed to take into account that Anther might be far above the rest of the competition if a tournament practically attracts half of the competitive smashers in Michigan? Suggestions of diminishing character point strength by dividing the number by how many people used that character would only make characters like Wario and Pikachu stronger, if anything.

Also, the fact that Anther hasn't actually won a tournament yet besides UMB12 indicates that, no, he isn't far above the rest of the competition.

This seems like the smartest way to design a tier list in my opinion. Over time it seems like this will be the most accurate. Although there is controversy over some tournaments having scrubs (where some bad character wins) vs others having pros (where mk or snake wins).

But all in all I think it will come to balance itself out.

inconclusive...although i seen something like that in tournys....wheres the list of hosted tourneys unless its someones birthday party tourney where friends play for fun...idk i want to see a list of where these tourneys are played from west to east coast...over all perspective of most used characters and best characters...on a top tiers list...i wouldnt mind looking into this again in a month or 2 brawl just came out couple months ago...

It would be good knowing a % of how much a character is used. If there are 100 Snakes and 1 Samus in a Tourney, there are a lot of chances that a Snake will win that tourney, not Samus. Underplayed characters may end in bottom of this "pseudo-tier" list because of it.

Still, it's a great informative post.
