So um........what happened to toon link? Is there any reason he is doing so bad in tournaments (insane counterpicks or whatnot?).

Just everyone thinks he's so good but he ends up so meh in results.

I appreciate what you've done here, Ankoku, and I think this is a great resource. However, echoing what some others have said, I take some slight issue with the different categories you've ranked the characters in: the divisions seem somewhat arbitrary and inconsistent*. So I have made a version with ranking divisions that I prefer. For my purposes, I fully accepted the point values of the most recent update as accurate.
*The current divisions take standard deviation into account, but I don't see the reasoning behind the magic numbers of 3, 1, 0, -0.5, and -0.95. If you've changed your divisions since then, tell me and I'll reread the thread more closely.

The first three things on each line are pretty self-explanatory: absolute rank, character, and total score. The final two numbers are relative difference in score and then absolute difference in score with the previous character. So Meta Knight's score is ~0.6896 (rounded to four significant figures) times Snake's score, and is 210.9125 points lower. My divisions are based on the relative differences: any character whose score is less than 0.8000 times the higher score becomes the highest-ranking character in a new ranking group, shown by an empty line between them.

The critical number 0.8000 is, yes, somewhat arbitrary, but a) it is consistent, and b) gives interesting results. Moreover, I chose 0.8000 because most characters are within 0.8x of the next-best character's score. My divisions break down at the extremes: I have Snake, Meta Knight, and Dedede and Toon Link, Mario, Sheik, and Captain Falcon grouped with their neighbors, rather than having 3 1-character groups at the top and 4 1-character groups at the bottom. I can't really defend this choice with anything besides "well, I disprefer singleton ranking groups", so take that as you will. The other groups, from ROB through Ganondorf (28 out of the 37 characters), all line up nicely without any fudge factors.

Thoughts? Comments? Suggestions?

Rankings are statistics, and tiers are worthless.

Nah, tiers are loosely based on results and also go into a character's potential as well as what has already been done.

Im surprised Ness went up. Even with the CG, he's a C rank. Odd.

(Im not offending any Ness mains, my brother is a die hard Ness main, and this news would intrigue him)

How did he rise from the E rank?

I'm not completely comfortable with entry fee being weighted the same as the number of entrants, but I can't think of a better way to do it, nor how to justify switching the current formula. You'd really think that I would be used to living in a world with imperfect information by now.

And dang Lucas is low...and Ness is sooo high above him. I love Ness and I hate Lucas, but I will admit those results look a little odd. Toon Link is looking pretty low for how good he is too...anyone disagree?

I agree, but a lot of this has to do with character turnout at tournaments. There are less popular characters in the game and they can be pretty good, but simply by not being liked as much they will be lower in the rankings because less people are using them lowering chances of them placing in tournaments.
