Overall Game Features:

Single Player Campaign

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Call_of_Duty:_Black_Ops

Call of Duty: Black Ops is set during the Cold War. Players take the role of black ops operators involved in missions behind enemy lines, taking place in various locations such as the Ural Mountains and Vietnam. As SOG operators, playable characters will have much more significant roles on the battlefield than their previous counterparts who were often the common soldiers. In this way, the player's characters will have their own traits such as voices (during in-game sequences) and shadows.
Co-Op Missions:

Black Ops will feature a dedicated co-op campaign, supporting up to four players, which uses different levels than the single player campaign.
It was announced back in September that the co-op campaign was taken out of Black Ops. The possibility of it coming in the future (as DLC) is highly unlikely.
Competitive Multiplayer:

The fast-paced, customizable, class-based multiplayer combat that the series is known for returns again. This iteration aims to tone down the air support that overshadowed Modern Warfare 2 and restore emphasis to gunplay and situational combat; in many ways, it aims to be a successor to Call of Duty 4 and World at War as opposed to following in the footsteps of its much-maligned predecessor. This includes a number of fundamental changes to both the basic gameplay as well as the persistence system.
Vehicles will return, as well as dedicated servers for the PC version unlike Infinity Ward's Modern Warfare 2. It will feature a "Create-a-Class 2.0" allowing appearance customization alongside perks. Killstreaks will not count towards each other (while stacking and carrying over after deaths). Black Ops' multiplayer designer also stated there will be no nukes or game-ending killstreaks.
Game modes:

Core:

- Team Deathmatch (Points for headshots and other bonuses will be added to the team's score.)
- Mercenary Team Deathmatch (Same thing as regular TDM but game parties are not allowed.)
- Free for all
- Domination
- Ground War
- Demolition
- Capture the Flag
- Sabotage
- Headquarters
- Search and Destroy (Xbox LIVE party chat disabled)
- Team Tactical (Search and Destroy, Headquarters, Sabotage, Domination and Team Deathmatch)
- Express (Added 8/21/11 - 30 second timer lobbies, no ghost or second chance)

Barebones:

- Pure
- Classic
- Team Tactical

Hardcore:

- Hardcore Team Deathmatch
- Hardcore Search and Destroy (Xbox LIVE party chat disabled)
- Hardcore Free for All
- Hardcore Headquarters (Added 11/23/10)
- Hardcore Capture the Flag (Added 11/23/10)

Prestige: (Removed)

- Prestige Team Deathmatch
- Prestige Hardcore
- Prestige Pure

And lastly, you have "Combat Training." (Fight against enemy AI in a training mode.)

Create-A-Class 2.0
The unlock system for Black Ops has been re-designed from it's predecessors. In addition to earning XP and ranking up from multiplayer matches, you also earn a currency called "COD Points," or CP. This currency is used to unlock everything from weapons and attachments to killstreak rewards and perks. As you rank up, you earn more CP per match and are given the right to purchase more items. In short, your level gives you access to new items, but you have to spend money to add items to your arsenal.

Wager Matches
Alongside CP comes a brand new playlist known as the Wager Match. These are specialized, 6-player free-for-all matches which require you to ante up some of your precious CP in order to participate. The top three players finish "in the money" and will earn back their ante, plus a hefty bonus. The bottom three will lose everything.

The four Wager Match modes are:

1. One In The Chamber
Each player spawns with a pistol and a single bullet. Every time you kill an enemy, you're given another bullet. Learn to trust your instincts, take a deep breath, and make every shot count.

2. Gun Game
Each player spawns with a pistol. Each time you earn a kill, you're given a new, slightly more powerful gun. You'll go through pistols, shotguns, assault rifles, submachine guns, light machines, and sniper rifles, before finishing with a crossbow and ballistic knife. The first player to get one kill with each of the 20 weapons in the rotation is the winner.

3. Sharpshooter
Each player spawns with the same, random gun, and every 45 seconds that gun is randomly changed. This will challenge players to be consistently competent with each gun in the game.

4. Sticks and Stones
Eeach player is given a crossbow, ballistic knife, and a tomahawk. Kills with the crossbow and ballistic knife will add to your score, while killing someone with a tomahawk will drop their score to zero. The player with the most points at the end of the time limit is the winner.

Combat Training
You can now play through the entire multiplayer progression, either solo or with friends, against bots. Your progress in combat training does not carry into regular multiplayer. This a good way to learn the maps, practice with new weapons, or play with friends who are afraid of hopping online.

Theatre Mode
You can now replay your recently played matches, build clips and gameplay videos, and upload them to a central file share for all of your friends to see.

Prestige
There will be 15 levels of prestige this time around. The first five will unlock extra class slots, and the remaining prestiges will continue to unlock special bonuses (for example, Gold camo becomes available for purchase at Prestige 14). To compensate for the extra prestiges, the max level has been dropped from 70 to 50; reaching 15 prestiges in Black Ops should take roughly the same amount of time as 10 prestiges in Modern Warfare 2.

Contracts and Challenges
Rewards players with bonus XP for grinding out specific types of kills, or doing something particularly difficult and cool. Black Ops adds a new layer on top of this system with Contracts, which are a special set of tightly focused, time-limited challenges. Players can purchase any number of Contracts with their CP, and will be rewarded with bonus CP and/or XP if they complete the terms of the contract within the set amount of time. These contracts will rotate on a daily/weekly basis, ensuring that there is always something new for the hardcore player to chase.
Visual Customization
In addition to customizing your character from a tactical perspective, you are also given a wealth of new visual customization options to play around with. This includes a custom emblem editor, custom weapon sight reticules, gun camos, face camos, and more.

Interactive Maps
Certain multiplayer maps will feature interactive elements and environmental events. For example, one map has a bomb site placed beneath the engine of a rocket prepped for launch, forcing players to time plants and defuses so that they aren't burned alive when the rocket lifts off. Other maps might have doors which can be opened or closed by the defending team, allowing them to manipulate the flow of traffic through the map. Players will now have to not only learn the geography of each map, but the ways in which they can be manipulated as well.

DLC/Map Packs

- The first map pack 'First Strike' was released on February 1st, 2011 and will be a timed exclusive on the Xbox 360. (Probably 1 month like MW2.) It costs $15/1200 MSP and will contain 4 new multiplayer maps and 1 new zombie map. (New weapons and perks such as PhD Flopper and Stamin-Up and a new enemy (space monkeys) are to appear in this map.) It is being released on the PS3 on March 3rd and was released on the PC/Steam on March 25th.
- The second map pack 'Escalation' was released on May 3rd, 2011 and will be a timed exclusive on the Xbox 360. It will be $15/1200 MSP and will contain 4 new multiplayer maps and 1 new zombie map. (The new MP maps are: Convoy, Zoo, Stockpile and Hotel and "Call of the Dead" which is the new zombies mode map.) (Video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z9gh-LsVGX4&feature=player_embedded) (Zoo takes place in an abandoned Soviet zoo. The map includes a monorail track that you can get up onto and use to walk most of map. The rail also sounds like a great sniping position. Hotel was inspired by the vistas of Havana. There are a lot of flank paths and places to hide, the Treyarch folks say. A second floor can be accessed only by a set of elevators which sounds like a neat chokepoint to the sniping positions. Convoy is retro America. The map is built around the premise that a United States convoy was hit by a Soviet ambush. Part of the level includes a damaged road that gives you access to a bit of underground. Stockpile takes place in a suburban village in Russia that is also home to a stockpile of weapons. The middle of the village has an operational garage which Treyarch says is the key to the map. You can open and close the doors and then use the position to hold the entire map.
- The 'Escalation' map pack was released on the PC on June 2nd, 2011 and June 10th, 2011 for the PS3.
- "Call of the Dead" video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3_Cx82OFXM0&feature=channel_video_title
- The third map pack 'Annihilation' was released on the Xbox 360 on June 28th and will include 4 new multiplayer maps and 1 new nazi zombie map.
- Not much is known about the new maps and the new nazi zombie map is called 'Shangri-La'. This map pack will be a 1 month timed exclusive on the 360 and will be released on the PS3 and PC at a later unspecified date. It will cost you $15/1200 MSP. (Trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F_oZ7SUSm_g)
- The fourth map pack 'Rezurrection' was released for the 360 on August 23rd. It contains the 4 re-mastered WaW nazi zombie maps, an "enhanced Zombies Soundtrack" and a new Zombies Moon theme. (http://www.joystiq.com/2011/08/03/call-of-duty-black-ops-resurrection-dlc-coming-this-quarter/)
- The 'Rezurrection' map pack will be released on the PS3/PC on September 22nd for $15.

- If you purchase the Hardened or Prestige editions of the game, you get to play on the 4 remade WaW zombie maps. You'll be able to play these maps in the upcoming 'Rezurrection' map pack for $15/1200 MSP.

Zombie mode:

The cooperative wave-based, zombie-slaughtering fight for your life returns! Kill zombies to earn credits, which can be spent on weapons, perks, and environmental effects. Your only goal - survive!
Default Maps

The game will ship with three maps:

1. Kino Der Toten (Theater of the damned): Features the characters from World at War transported forward through time. Unlocked from the start.

"Five": Features
JFK, Castro, Nixon, and McNamara fighting hordes of zombies in the Pentagon.
Unlocked by finishing the campaign and watching through the credits.

Dead Ops: Not a traditional map; rather, it is a top-down, arcade style shooter. Unlocked via a secret code. (Secret code:
On the main menu screen, you can look around using the right stick. If you look down, you'll see that you're looking through the eyes of your character who is strapped to a chair. If you press the left and right trigger alternately in quick succession, you can break out of the straps and get out of the chair.

Once you're out of the chair, you can walk around. Walk up to the computer and you'll be prompted to press X to use it. Do that and it brings up a computer screen with a DOS prompt and on screen keyboard. Type in "cd bin" without quotes and hit enter, then type "doa" without quotes and hit enter. This unlocks Dead Ops.

From then on, Dead Ops will show up in the list of maps for zombies, so you only have to do this once.
)

Bonus Maps

The Hardened and Prestige editions will also include the four Nazi Zombie levels from World at War: Nacht der Untoten, Verruckt, Shi No Numa, and Der Reise.

Treyarch needs to pull out everything they have to even consider getting a purchase from me. CoD: WaW was a huge waste of my money.

Definitely is not Vietnam, kinda was hoping it would be though. Looks like a continuation of MW2 actually, the "we have to bring him back" in the preview is probably Ghost or Roach...
But who knows? I would honestly prefer just a new story, and gameplay at least a little different from MW2

The new trailer clearly suggests that Black Ops is going to be taken on a route of it's own from theModern Warfare sub series . In one scene you can clearly see a pair of Veit Cong soldiers with AK-47's in the new trailer.

EDIT MOAR STUFF:

You can also see TONS of Iroquois Huey Helicopters, which was pretty much a Iconic figure in the Vietnam war.

A clip of the trailer also has what you can clearly see is a Styer AUG, and not the HBAR version in MW2, suggesting that the game will take place during or after 1977.

Also there's something funky about the guy in the space suit and that SR71 flying in a dangerously high altitude.

This better be a reason for me to quit MW2. I actually enjoyed (Unlike almost every MW player) WaW (Huge WWII nerd, but I also enjoyed the game itself.) As much as I love MW2, It has oh, so many problems. Let the hope for this game begin.

What research I've dug up.

Treyarch wants only Pistols/Launcher as secondaries.
Remove Commando and Tactical Nuke (AWWWW CHEAAAAY)
Knifes as Secondaries (maybe)
Try to remove "unbalanced-ness" from Mw2

And WaW didn't have many problems? MP40 + Juggernaut, UAV recon planes being able to see you though buildings (makes sense, right?), rush the tanks etc. (I only played the WaW MP beta, I'm sure you guys know more flaws in the game then I do)

I agree with pistols/launchers being secondaries. NONE OF THAT SHOTGUN BS IN MW2!
YES. YES! Will give players less AIDS when they play the game and stop nuke boosters.
What? Why would they be considered 'secondaries'? WTF?
They should try to remove "unbalanced-ness" from WaW first.

I exclusively played Search in WaW, no tanks. MP40+Juggernaut wasn't really a problem to me. It pretty much goes without saying that MP40 was king in WaW, I used it a lot myself.

And there's no way you can compare WaW's problems to the plethora of problems that MW2 has had. Every game has its problems, but MW2 has far more than WaW.

WaW is good. CoD4 is good. MW2 is broken.

Still don't get the WaW hate though. I know the problems of CoD4 and WaW(they share some problems as well) but MW2 has so many problems lolololol

I guess people are still mad at Treyarch because of CoD3(which came out 4 years ago).

Also, i didn't find the MP40 too fun to use. It's not a sniping weapon and it has bad recoil......apparently the UMP45 from MW2 is almost sniping weapon(for a SMG) and has a manageable recoil.

Mostly because WW2 has been done too many times by Treyarch.

When WaW came out and I started playing the multiplayer, I kept on comparing it to CoD4. Whenever I did, WaW just felt flat out stale to me; from the terrible maps (IMO) to the annoying *** guns. It just wasn't fun for me.

HOWEVER, Nazi Zombies is an absolute BLAST when you're playing with friends.

Nice trailer. The red tint sometimes annoyed me though...

I actually went through the trouble of downloading the trailer and running again in slow-mo so I could pick out a few of the weapons shown:

RPD
AUG (can't tell what kind - I'm pretty sure it's the assault rifle variant, since it had the scope on it)
AK-47 (duh! What's a game set in Vietnam wthout it?)
I think that might have been a SPAS-12 on the guy's back at one point, but I didn't get a very good view.

And I see that Treyarch still letting you drive things like helicopters. I'd whoop if they let that be a killstreak.

Well, we can't overlook that horrible game, can we? And it didn't help that they leeched off of IW's success with their CoD4 engine. Half their work was already completed for them. You can thank IW for making WaW "decent".

That's like saying Bioware and numerous other companies rode the success of Epic games due to the fact that they use the Unreal Engine 3.

knife should definitely be a secondary, I never really liked the knee jerk reaction kills by knifing someone as you run around a corner.

The difference between companies using the Unreal Engine 3 and WaW riding on the success of CoD4 is the fact that the games are nearly identical in terms of mechanics; from the perks to the killstreaks and even a lot of the guns have very similar qualities.

Call Of Duty: Black Ops Has 4-Player Co-op

http://ca.kotaku.com/5535796/call-of-duty-black-ops-has-4+player-co+op

According to this report there'll be another "C-130" sequence in Black Ops, with a level tasking the player with manning a camera in the recon bird while issuing orders to troops on the ground.

Wondering about the kind of guns that will be in the game? There aren't just guns, there are also crossbows. And yes, all that snow you can see means that you won't just be fighting in the jungles of Cuba and Vietnam; you'll also be blowing stuff up in Mother Russia as well.

The game will also feature 2-4 player co-op, with the game's main story focusing on two characters over "multiple covert international conflicts"

EDIT 2: Call of Duty: Black Ops brings the Cold War to Wii Nov. 9

Yeah Nazi zombies was the ONLY reason I bough WaW.

Such fun with 4 players.

Hopefully black ops will be decent.

I guess one problem with Infinity Ward is that they were willing to take huge risks to make the game better. Some worked (Pro versions of perks), some didn't (Tac Nuke killstreak. And no party chat).

Now that IW's gone, it's up to Treyarch to start introducing new gameplay mechanics that will keeps the series popular.

I think that if the Knife is a secondary, it'll be like a Grip on a LMG in COD4. It'd be there, but it would replace a perk. I'm just saying, it'd be a pain to switch to a knife.

The first full-length trailer of Call of Duty: Black Ops will be aired on ESPN during the NBA Eastern Conference Finals on May 18, 2010.

8:30 EST I believe.

I'm really excited for this game actually. I don't think MW2 is as bad as people say (although the guns are quite noob friendly, I agree) but I'm in desperate need of a change. I think that this is kind of redemption for the cod series if it goes well, because MW2 left a bad impression on many players. It also kind of sets the bar though, because they have their work cut out if they want to make it as successful as MW2 was. Anyways, I believe in them and I think they can make this better than MW2, at least I hope. Excited for that trailer tomorrow.

I will buy this game for Nazi Zombies alone. I'm still mad they didn't put something like that in MW2.

There was a trailer on the Celtics-Magic game just now! Looked pretty cool! Saw an H-Bar, some other cool stuff as well. Lots of talk about "Everything you know is a lie" and whatnot. 11.9.10!!!

After watching the trailer again, I noticed it looked a little more Battlefield-ish. Any other thoughts?
