Best: Generation II:Gold, Silver, Crystal.

Why?: Because they feel like more of a sequel than every other generation did. Not only could you trade from Generation I, you even revisited it later in the game. The only criticism is that it had the most underwhelming new Pokemon. Sure you had Scizor, Blissey, The legendary Dogs, but you also had, Qwilfish, Dunsparce, Delibird, etc.....

Worst: Generation IV: Now don't get me wrong, I own Platinum, but as far as this game goes, the whole premise became very repetitive. My biggest gripe is that the only form of trading from a previous generation was basically losing them forever. I imported my Regi's and then lost Diamond...... It's just laziness. In generation II, you could import them and trade them back. Why not here? Just to make every thing harder and "funner"? Well, it's not fun for me.

What are your favorite and least favorite generation?
Here's how they rank:
1:II
2.I
3.III
4.IV.

In-game wise, I agree with you.

But... from the battling point of view, GSC was pretty horrible. TOO much stalling.

The sequel-like feeling to GSC was the best part of the generation. Don't you just love it when your favorite game franchise comes out with a sequel?
They need to do that more often. Heck, bring on the sequels. But make them all good and original, and don't dish them out like Final Fantasy.
Please.

Well, I really like the sprites of DPPt

I also really like the physical/special move split...makes pokemon such as Kingler more useful since he was a water type that was based around physical and now gets physical water STAB

I disagree with you on 4th gen being the worst

Fourth Generation is actually my second-favorite generation. Next to first. After second.
I really like how they made the difference more distinct though, when it comes to physical and special attacks.

I'm sure that most people will agree that I made 1st gen the worst by a large margin.

...What do you mean?

In my opinion, III Gen is the worst game series. I just...don't enjoy it at all. The whole landscape is tedious, and the fact that I had to trade between FireRed and Sapphire for Pokemon that I wanted in each was just...tedious.

Generation II is clearly the best. It feels so good to play a game in which you have SO many options for in-game teams! I love how almost all the Pokemon are available in the wild!

I agree with you but I would switch gen 4 and 3. So my order would be...

II
I
IV
III

Even though a lot of the Pokemon in gen 4 suck, the gameplay, overall, is a lot better and more sophisticated. You also have the addition of trading without having rl friends, which helps a lot.

Also, DPP have the most replay value out of all the other Pokemon games, considering there is a crapload of pokemon to catch. 400+ I think? (I just beat Platinum and I only have 70 so far) :(

Btw, I CANNOT FREAKING WAIT FOR THE GOLD/SILVER REMAKE!!! IT'S GONNA BE AWESOME! EDIT- well, if they make one... :|

Best: IV I really liked the way these games flowed. Pearl was not too hard or too easy, and it left me feeling satisfied. The story was slightly better than the previous generations also (although they don't vary much do they?).
2nd: II Most of us were thinking "OMG NEW POKEMON!". These series always seems classic looking back.
3rd: I yeah, it's there
Worst: III I found these really boring and frustrating to play. I waited forever to play these, but I found myself disappointed.

1st gen pales in comparison to the rest. Glitches, corrupted saves, some horrible sprites, unbalanced ubers, and a generally more shallow and skill-less combat system. All other gens have their merits.

First generation gets nostalgia points. But, if you compare 1st and second generation Stadium against the newer fourth generation version, you'll find Stadium is way better than Revolution. I was expecting more from that game.:ohwell:

Needs less third gen hate and moar fourth gen hate.

To be honest, I can't choose between the first three gens. It really depends on which one I've played most recently, and as such, the one I recall most vividly.

I love first gen's simplicity, the fact that it started it all, the originality in Pokemon and their sprites, the music, the whole Unknown Dungeon -- a concept which has yet to be found in future games, I believe -- the game had a lot of great stuff in it, truthfully. Was the gameplay perfect? No, far from it. But it's still awesome. And some of its flaws, like the glitches, are what make it so memorable and awesome to this day.

Second gen...arguably has the biggest nostalgia for me, actually. It doesn't make sense since first gen was the first I played, but looking back I recall second gen MUCH more than first. Nonetheless, first to second gen is almost as big of a transition as SSB64 to Melee. Night/Day, registering items, breeding, easier use of HMs, new types, experience bar, another region...I could go on and on describing them all. The gameplay just felt...great. MK's right, there's SO much diversity, and you can catch nearly all of the Pokemon in the wild. Also, the plotline of G/S/C is by far my favorite. Team Rocket is definitely the best evil organization (they're just evil, no stupid ulterior motive and then turning soft when their plans go wrong *COUGH*EVERYTEAMAFTER*COUGH*), and I liked how Team Rocket was really involved. They start out with just taking Slowpoke Well, and work their way all the way up to taking over an entire Radio Tower. And Lance, who is simply bad***, is there to aid you. Well, sort of. But he's still sitting there being bad***, regardless.
It felt like G/S/C had the MOST content without just slapping on replay value on the end. Which is great for perfection or if you're bored, but...otherwise it bores you. 251 is a perfect number for the Pokedex. Enough that it's a challenge, but not so much that you have to break it up into many pieces lest you shoot yourself out of boredom.

Third gen...everyone hates it, and I can see some reason to that. It did take out the whole time system and the extra region, both of which people were especially butthurt over since it was the first to remove them. But Hoenn is, quite frankly, the most diverse continent, and for that I love it. It has rainy forests, beaches, islands, cities, deserts, caves, ash-y plains and mountains...it's immense. NO other gen has quite so many environments. My favorite part about this gen, though, is that it felt like a fresh start to me. First gen and second gen fit together pretty well...but third gen feels like Pokemon in a whole new...everything. Which might seem bad since the first two generations were good, but something about that just made it amazing. And for all of its crappy Pokemon, I found a lot of them actually intriguing. When you think about it, third gen brought a lot to the table too. A ton of graphical upgrades like visual PC boxes rather than the text-based ones, running shoes, etc. I loved that generation, unlike most of the population.

Fourth gen, you usually either love it or loathe it. I feel the latter. I like the physical/special split. The graphics are nice. But in the end, the plot feels lackluster at best with a crappy team which feels more like Jessie and James from the TV show, weird hair included. Overall...it felt very bland to me. The gyms were pretty creatively designed, especially the overhauls in Platinum, but it doesn't make up for the rest. Yes, there are 493 Pokemon to get, but that's not really replay value...completing such a massive Pokedex is painful and annoying. Also, I feel like fourth gen doesn't get the flack it should for not having another region, since I feel like a lot of people disliked third gen for that. People hate third gen for not continuing it and then I guess the issue stays third gen's. Most of the Pokemon are unimaginative and crappy. Platinum has slightly bettered my opinion on the generation, I do think Galactic is a little better there and is more fleshed-out. Until Platinum, I hadn't listened to the music that closely, and now realize that a lot of the battle music is really good, especially Cyrus and Cynthia's themes.

I think when it gets hated, fourth gen will sometimes receive more hate than it deserves, but it gets more credit than it deserves too. Purely mechanics-wise, fourth gen does win, yes. HOWEVER, when you talk about generations, you're generally referring to the games in their entirety. There's not much point in discussing the mere battling aspect, as few could/would argue that fourth gen did not better it. A lot of people seem to settle on fourth gen as best simply because of mechanics. If you like it the best, feel free to do so, it just irks me when people do it for reasons that seem illogical.

So I pretty much have to go with...

First = Second = Third >>> Fourth

I will always be a 1st Gen lover. I revere them in the following order (from best to worst):

1st Gen
3rd Gen
2nd Gen
4th Gen

The 3rd Gen was just so much like the first, being the second most original. The 4th Gen is the second "sequel" generation, and it failed the most in originality. I approach games from an artistic standpoint, not a gamer's standpoint, so 4th Gen absolutely fails on my charts.

Kind of hard... but..

4th generation worst.
1st generation.
And then 3rd or 2nd generation. I'll probably put up 3rd generation on first though, since it did bring a lot of pokemon I like today and introduced the battle frontier. Haha. Loved that region a bunch to. The game was great at originality.

I really don't hate any of them though. I only say 4th generation is worse because the game was too.. boring. When I had 3rd generation, I never really had a "boring" moment. The only time that came was when I was leveling.. but even in 4th gen I find gym leaders.. the elite four.. and the legendaries boring sometimes. Not all the times though. 4th gen just didn't really stand out to me that much. It did have a lot of good pokes though.

2nd generation is obviously tied with 3rd generation since it brought a LOT to the table when it came to handheld gaming. It had a lot of extra content added on to it from the originals. Big step up.

It's hard for me to rank.

Story-wise, I like the original gen the best, and I like the original 151 more than 95% of the newer pokemon as well. However, I love a lot of the new stuff they've added, like the new types, breeding system, contests, and the physical/special split (to name a few).

I wish they'd come out with a true sequel to R/B/Y with the same characters.... and Team Rocket. ;-; I miss the original. It was just so good. LeafGreen was my shiiiiiz.

So, I guess:
Best is I (R/B/Y)
Worst is IV (D/P/Pt)

I like the new changes to the overall gameplay, but the story and in-game playthrough aren't that fun for me anymore. And some of the new pogeys are just ridiculous.

This is so true, I bought Platinum but i already sold it, just to boring.
It had some good points like the new gym designs and pokemon, but still wasnt that great.
Pokemon Crystal was by far the best pokemon game :) they should make another game like Crystal where you can challenge every gym leader and visit everywhere from kanto to sinnoh, lol.

IV gen for best because I love the legendary Pokemon from this gen so much, and I enjoy Dawn, (Dawn fan, what can I say). II gen for worst because I don't use the legendaries from there much.

Best to worst, imo:

II
III
IIII
I

Come on everyone, 1st gen was the worst. The most strategy ever was knowing which pokemon were offensive or defensive, and the use of status effects. That's, like, nothing. And what about items? Just throw leftovers on everything. Plus, they had soooooo many useless moves that they had to know that nobody was ever going to use, not even noobs (i.e. slam).

I always consider gen 2 to be somewhat the father of competitive battling. Bringing in breeding, separating special attack and special defense, and adding dark and steel types are HUGE and positive changes to pokemon. (Didn't they also add in EVs and IVs?)

Generation 3 brought in natures (I think), double battles, abilities, and weather, so it was good as well.

Gen 4 is meh. Yes, it has better graphics, but that's because it's the newest. It didn't really add much to pokemon; it mainly just benefited from the innovations in the previous 2 generations.

Well, I don't know if we're counting that strange 3 and 1/2 generation that is FR and LG, but if those dont fall into the first generation section (I don't think they should, the islands at the end...), they're my favorite.

So, in order of awesome according to me it goes

1. III1/2
2. II
3. III
4. I (Love the game, hate the ****ing gameplay, terrible sprites, no run feature until you get the bike [same gripe with 2nd gen, but that game is too good to complain], and nothing past the first elite four, grinding them gets tiring...)
5. IIII. Sucked hard.

1.GS and C would be behide because it didn't feel as fun. and they have an amazing sound track and a bunch of new stuff and i remember how i couldn't find the pokeballs at first And i spend an hour trying to get pass the 1st part of the ice maze till I got someone esle to do it and the phone wass cool. And it's cool to have a shiny J-puff that someone gave you. huge map better pokedex. And there was always something new to find or a new puzzle(I loved the mail thing)good bosses and paths to the bosses

2. Yellow(never played red and blue) Just barely in my book. Greatest thing ever when you are 6 I remember how the game was and hard at the same time and it was so hard to catch garados and dratini. little pikachu skocking you and the best story line ever(pokemon wise) good bosses and paths to the bosses

3.RSE the eltie four sucked and flash was retarted the weather was cool impossible to catch groudon WTF and the sercet base was cool gyms are aright with a cool battle front

4. LG/FR rip up RBY and the berrys were dumb but the islands were cool. I still perfer Yellow

5. DPPL the musik sucked and why does everything have to evole and look wierd bosses sucked and it was easy

This is always hard to call for me

1. II
This gen ended up almost the exact opposite of 4th gen for me in that it may have had a somewhat poor battling system with stalls, but it made up for it in virtually every other way. The new world, the new pokemon, the new types and the split for special atk and def, the soundtrack, the return of Team Rocket in a grander scale. And then it was capped off with going back to where it all started and then fighting the original champion. For some reason the whole game was just FUN to play, and replay, and replay... And I'll agree, it had the perfect number for a pokedex at 251. Nostalgia? Oh some is definitely present when I look back on this game... but it earned it.

2. III
I certainly didn't expect this. When I first started I liked it for a bit... then found myself bored with it. I gave it a break and then came back to it later... I ended up liking it. The world can feel a bit boring at times but it's diverse enough to make up for it later on, and some of the new designs really caught on with me. The soundtrack was pretty good, the gym trainers were interesting enough and for once the elite four actually PUT UP A FIGHT. In the other games if I just prepared well enough with the right types I was fine but here they actually were packing some pretty hard hitting attacks. And at the end of it all I got Salamence and Metagross... perfect.

3. I
It's aged well in some areas, not so well in others. Fun game, but it can get a bit repetitive when some pokemon don't 'yet' have the moves needed to make them more useful, or harder hitting. On the other hand, this was back when you could get infinite tm's and rare candies... For something I've played so many times though it still has its perks, such as being simple and right to the point. You're here, you've got 8 gyms, team rocket and the elite 4 (5) to defeat. Get to it.

4. IV
The battle system is bliss. If the pokemon wasn't just made to be crappy from the start you can usually find a use for just about anyone. Trading available (usually) whenever you want it? On the other hand, maybe it's just that things are too routine by now but... the world just feels dull. The gym leaders aren't all that interesting, we have too many legendaries, too many useless... too many pokemon in general. Good to have more diversity but god help you if you want 300+ of them captured. The soundtrack is a bit hit or miss but when it hits... ****, haha. As I play it though I start to warm up to it some more so...

You know what else I noticed? As the series progressed, the rivals grew worse; The ones from gen III are almost non-existent throughout the game, and the Gen IV one is annoying as hell. Why did the rivals change from formidable, coldhearted *******s to pathetic, annoying idiots? Also, none of them since Gen I have become champion. Instead we're stuck with some boring NPC nobody cares about (Except Lance. He's cool). Just a small rant.

Ok, Gary was good but it's kind of hard to decide which is better: Silver or Gary?

I personally prefer Silver, but that's just me.
Gary is definetly my second favorite rival.

I agree with you on at least fourth gen though. In third gen, you really didn't have a rival, but in 4th gen, your rival was annoying. Very annoying. In fact it's one of the reasons I really don't like progressing the story.

1
I mean come on! this is the first generation! we got mew, mewtwo, charizard, dragonite, lapras, snorlax, and so on! this IS the essence of pokemon! the game wan't too hard, and had that perfect touch to it. i mean, they might as well have it spray nicotine from it to try make it more addictive.

3
This was originally my favorite until i played red again. I liked how it was just hard enough to make you want to train more just to beat that last gym. I liked the controlled number of legendaries, and the creative new pokemon. sure the elite four was a bit too easy, but it has a good storyline to back it up.

2
This one was a bit too easy for me. you could beat the game by just getting 3 pokemon. the game took a while, which kept me entertained, but they made too much changes to the kanto reigon. i mean, if that was how it was in RBY, i would hate it so bad. But i did like that new thing with the unowns.

4
Okay, i just need to say one thing. TOO MUCH FRIGGIN LEGENDARIES! It made what was the most special part of pokemon (catching rare and powerful pokemon to use) not so special! like before, when you have spent so long just to catch that darn lugia, you get so happy when you finally do! On this one, you go and catch regigigas, and say "1 down, 13 to go!". it's like how christmas gets less exciting every year when you get older. & i thought the game was too easy. (accept victory road. i started over a new game, and i just stopped once i got there). Another thing was that they clearly are running out of pokemon. i mean bronzor? Come on! a metal plate with balls around it! that is saying something.

notice this was my biggest paragraph

I guess I'll have to say...

II - I put the second gen at the top. It was in every way bigger and better than the first gen. A lot of it is nostalgia and the gameplay has become dated, but with what the second gen has overall I must place it at the top. Some of my favorite music is from this gen as well.

IV - With Platinum I easily give the second spot to the fourth gen. D/P alone have their problems but Platinum fixes much of that. I found myself really enjoying the main game with Platinum and though I can't stand some new pokemon others have found their way near the top of my favorites. Yeah, Team Galactic sucks, but that wasn't too big of a deal for me. Overall the music is great.

III - What to say with the third gen. Nothing really bad about it but it just doesn't stand out for me. I skipped the third gen at first and after playing Diamond I went back and played Emerald and LG, maybe that messed with my opinion too much but whatever. Emerald was fun, but nothing more. I can't say that I like any of the new pokemon from gen three ether. LG was a great remake of the first gen though. If I were to seperate R/S/E and FR/LG then FR/LG would tie with gen four.

I - Gameplay is dated and there's a far superior remake for it. When the only thing it holds over the other gens is nostalgia it's not going to be anywhere but last.
