But that's just "settling." Win a gold medal, so you don't have an obligation to play again? I just think NBA players don't really understand the importance of the Olympics compared to other sports. American Football and Baseball don't have many events that have them taking on the world, if any.
Look at Futbol, and you see how much passion is brought when national teams are assembled to take on other teams. The World Cup and the Olympics bring so much hype, and the players that represent their country pour so much emotion for a chance to get the gold. Even region events like the Euro Cup brought plenty of passion and hype to countries everywhere, including the US.
Even a sport like Tennis, where players are constantly competing against players from other countries show pride in representing their country. Andy Murray was crying after he lost Wimbledon to Federer. He knew his country was counting on him, and he openly admitted he let his country down.
And then let's not forget all the other Olympic events. Some have events go on locally and nationally such as swimming and track. However, these guys train everyday, everynight for that one moment that only comes around every 4 years.
A lot of basketball players seem to blow the Olympics off for one reason or another, and I find that greatly disappointing. Injuries is one thing, but if you are willing to suit up when you are "hurting" during the season or playoffs, you should be suiting up for the Olympics as well.
EDIT: LOL! Anthony Davis hits a 4 point play. Gets up and trash talks the Dominican Republic coach....who just happened to be his college coach. Genius.
