it's true, haha. but hey, might as well go if i'm gonna be there :p
pretty much this. I guess I'll stop in and see what's happening there. . .

Also, it's really dumb to not pay out for 2nd and 3rd place, you should really change that. Instead of a fixed pot, pay out based on entrance fees that are paid in (go for a 60%/30%/10% pot distribution), and to simplify the rules for people who haven't played in tournaments before, just have the matches be played on random stages off of the legal singles stage list, since that's probably the closest we'd get to a regular tournament setting with casuals wanting to go to Mushroom Kingdom II and **** like that.

this is really huge LOL

As much fun as it would be to get to play melee at something like this, doing it on a laggy tv makes it really difficult to enjoy.

edit: I'm also gonna be there all 4 days

I am AX Gaming Room Staff for 2010.

I already told the guy in charge of the budget about how CRT TV's are the way to go for Smash. I am not sure if he will be able to get them or not, but I am trying my best.

In terms of running tournaments...who posted this?

As far as I know....
Due to time constraints, I don't think we will even run Melee.
There will be no entry fee. At least, there wasnt one the last two years. You pay for a badge and sign up, you compete in the tournament.
Cash prize? I don't think so.

Last time the Brawl tournament took forever due to the number of people who signed up and the amount of setups available. To those people saying "It was run horribly" please consider that when you have tournaments that are 80% casual players, the goal is to try to get the tournament run successfully, even if that means cutting corners in terms of standard tournament rules.

While I would love to run a standard Melee/Brawl Dubs/Singles tournament...time/setups/interest means that its probably not going to happen. I will create my own thread with concrete data that isn't speculation when it is available.

Seeing as you're part of the ax committee , why not make this your tourney?

Well, first of all, I am one of the people running it. That has already been decided.

The problem is that the stuff you posted simply isn't going to happen most likely.
I dont see AX running Melee over Brawl.

Brawl was the biggest tournament last year, and I don't see Melee as even a viable tournament option at a animecon, unless AX somehow gets 2X or 3X the setups as last year.

Well, can't really blame them for choosing the event that will undeniably draw more people.

even though the game is clearly inferior

:/

lol i totally remember that brawl tournament last year (or maybe it was the year before?). had a ridiculous amount of people. maybe there could be multiple tournaments and limit everyone to coming to only one to eliminate a massive bracket? *shrug* just a thought!

Last year it was 4 bigass groups, split up into 4 time slots, with the 4 winners competing in a standard tournament at the end....I think...I could be wrong.

Any suggestions to a better way to run a big tournament on few setups are welcome.

ohh must have been the year before that where it was one insanely massive group. hmm idk then...sounds like that plan didnt work out too well either >.<

worse comes to worst, maybe just have a smaller tournament and limit the amount of people in it? there's no entry/venue fee so you wouldn't be out any money, and you'd have a more controlled tournament. besides, it's not like people go to AX for a tourney. just a cool opportunity since it's there :p

Are you really saying you would rather have a smaller event where you might not even get to compete?

I think they want to maximize participation, not run a small tournament. I mean, how would you feel if we limited the tournament to say, 32 people, and had a 40+ people in line the day of the tournament to sign up right when the game room opened?

So in short its a tournament with a bunch of ***s cross-dressing while playing a match with kirby on hyrule.
Cool story bro.

Why do I even bother.

Honestly, if this is how the Melee scene is gonna respond when I post about the situation objectively, I don't see how I am going to convince them that there is interest for this.

Are any of the people who posted in this thread even seriously thinking about even attending AX?

I'm doing my best, but its not like I can just do whatever I want.

I know a couple people who posted here are going (i'm not)
You can disregard marthpwnzr's post... thats just dumb...

I think splitting it into subgroups is probably the best way to do it though. Maybe have more sub groups. Idk if you have the room for all 4 days but if you can, have multiple mini tourneys every day with each mini tourney having a cap. Have like a card or something to give the winners that they show to qualify for the final tourney on the fourth day?

Alternatively, run a melee tourney since it would have less people. lol :p

squidster always makes sense ^_^

i think he has a legit idea. sounds good to me. idk what your room setup/time slots or whatever is like though. if i remember correctly the gaming room is open many hours and has the same room for 4 days, so the subgroup thing could work!

The problem with that is that 1day visitors to the con need to be able to compete too.

Here's how it worked last year for reference.

1. On the day of the Smash tourney, you come early to the Console Gaming Room and get a ticket for one of the 4 groups, depending on what time you have free to compete. i.e. If there was an event you wanted to go to, you could sign up to play at a different time.

2. At the time for your group, you come back and compete.

3. If you won out of your group, you came back after the last group plays to compete in the final 4 tournament.

4. A winner is decided!

that sounds like it would work...did that go down well last year? and I mean, obviously it's going to be chaotic and crazy and unorganized because of the sheer number of people participating, I'm just trying to be positive and give suggestions to make it run more efficiently. ultimately it's your tourney, so whatever works for you go for it

If anyone has any suggestions to improve on last years setup, other than "better rules" and "more setups", then im just going to do what we did last year, unless the other staff come up with something.

You definitely should not take Marthpwnzer's post as "the whole community" lol

And as far as the tournament goes, what's the point guys?

Socal has a tourney every weekend and if you're going to anime expo, it's probably for anime anyway.

Or just bring a Setup and play friendlies with each other, or else you'll just be stomping casuals the whole time.

If I remember correctly, they used Wiimotes as controllers for last year, but I'm not 100% sure. Regardless, I would say make sure you have Gamecube or at the very least Classic Controllers to use for the tournament, it's a lot easier to use (maybe not as far as $$$ goes) and will make a lot of people happier. I wouldn't worry about Melee over Brawl, just stick with Brawl. Like you said, it is a LOT more popular than Melee at a convention like this, so there's really no reason to have Melee here instead.

Also, why would you (smashers) go to an ANIME expo to play in a MELEE tournament? Just enjoy the Brawl for once, as from the sounds of it, it will be FFA. Melee requires too much extra (CRTs, the older GCNs, GC controllers - while they're preferred, they're not necessary for Brawl, etc.), so Brawl seems to be the way to go.

I will be there for the four days, but I don't plan to enter any of the tournaments. I would like to see whoever does enter to enjoy themselves to the fullest though, and I think most of the people attending the CONVENTION would prefer Brawl because it is newer.

Marthpwnzer's posts = moving into a new neighborhood and finding dog **** on your front porch, it's best not to take that as an indication of the entire neighborhood if you catch my drift.

OP made up the date. I don't know which days the tournament are going to be. I believe Saturday is the day with the most attendance, it might make sense to put Smash there.

This. If you are coming to Anime Expo for the smash tournaments only, youre doing it wrong. Here is the idea, in my opinion. Come out for one day at Anime Expo, have fun seeing all the things there are to do. If you live in the LA area, I recommend you to come out anyways. Its an experience, even if you aren't an anime fan at all, just looking around is worth the price of admission.

And, as a bonus, there is Smash.

its inside of Anime Expo, so you can only get in if you've got a ticket
don't come just for a tourney, thats dumb
but AX is lots of fun so if you're into that sort of thing you should go anyways :D

How do I get a ticket? Can I just get one at the door?

Also, the Falcons in the pic on the first post are AWESOME!!

Don't have finalized stuff STILL that im allowed to post, so here goes nothing.

No Melee.
You need to be able to get into Anime Expo, meaning you need a pass, which are availible in 4 day, 2 day, and 1 day varieties. You can get one at the event.

For more information, check out anime-expo.org
