that better be clear kool-aidyeah, we charge a doorfee, but it's only bc we're so lame...if you hadnt figured that one out yet, look at the first pg of JB--um, how many games are having? haha, and we think we can fit it all into a reasonable amount of time; and on time for that matter!
ahh, yeah...but i agree about the setups in the car. if a group of people come together and bring one setup, that group should be able to come in free. as for doorfees, since its at my place, and i see your point...so, to boost tournament turnout----
wait for it...
wait for it...
how bout no door fee at all?
and
enough flavored, sugar water for everyone.
koolaid, im talkin about koolaide.

Oh, so that's where you've been. How is it? :ODoor fees generally go toward paying the venue fee.
When the venue is free, it seems disingenuous.
Also I've been on a Starcraft II kick since I got in the beta so I haven't been much in the mood for smashing :O
This too.zero idc bout the door fee i mean the venue is ur house so i can understand that but i mean 5 buck entry fees idk bout that tho
When you look at the total population to draw from, aiming for the people who are in it in order to make a profit isn't he best route. Even at bigger Alabama tourneys, only two people are going to come out on top once you factor in even minimal travel expenses.I'll pay a door fee, but the entry for tournaments should be $10
~especially since so many ppl can't make it. If there is only going to be 10 ppl playing brawl, i want the opportunity to try and win more than gas money...

Pretty much this is what I agree with. When you look at the total population to draw from, aiming for the people who are in it in order to make a profit isn't he best route. Even at bigger Alabama tourneys, only two people are going to come out on top once you factor in even minimal travel expenses.
The tourney fee is supposed to make the matches more intense and to put a significant prize at the end of the road. That prize is not the final objective more 90% of the tourney goers and only 1 person is going to get first anyway.
If anything, the prize money should be spread out more so that the economic 'burden' is less harsh on more people, since you mention 'winning gas money' anyway.
EDIT: I should mention that I am not going to the B-ham tourney if there is a door-fee anyway, and I can't really recommend it to my more casual smash friends either.
this thread is slowly killing me.loleww...
10ewws....
You should put it back. $5 isn't very much at all. -_-lol at the Munkus quote, "5$ is soooooo much! And my friends think so too!"
I don't know. Maybe since I paid door fees and went to 5$ entry tournaments all the time in NC, I thought that was normal, like chipping in for gas with your buddy, but some AL people are talking like it's taboo.
Jungle Beatdown will have no door fee now, but seriously guys, I see nothing wrong with door fees at all. I guess I'm just crazy.
This. Except anyone who puts on heat at a smashfest is INSANE. It already gets warm enough.Tournaments tend to use prodigious amounts of AC/heating and electricity. Anyone who hosts will find their bills a bit bigger at the end of the month. Plus its just a nice thank you for them risking their living space to sometimes irresponsible smashers.
Also, Huntsville what are you doing this weekend? The time to know is now! I wanna smash.
joot is currently sleeping here :oArgh moogle or chad or joot or somebody, what is huntsville doing? I have plans to make and I wanna smash.
http://kotaku.com/5499552/would-you-pay-women-to-play-xbox-games-with-you/gallery/yeah dude.
i dont want to pay a kid so i can hang out with him and play a video game.
and the door fee thing may prove true if you are like... risking the cleanliness of your house because you are hosting pound 4 at it or something but these things are like 10 person smashfests. and you never make a mess playing a video game.
dude, people have parties at their houses all the time... and im sure drunks make more of a mess than a bunch of people playing a video game. i have yet to have been to one party where a door fee is charged. wtf. its just people coming over to play a video game. its really not a big hassle.
i wish i could start hosting tournaments.
but who all is going over to zero's tonight?
We have to be moved out of here by May 19th anyway, cleaning up a little early is mostly a good thing.BUT ANYWAY THIS IS JUST A PLOT BY GEO TO GET ME TO CLEAN THE DINING ROOM AREA
i see your game
Ohhhh that makes so much sense now...sort ofWe have to be moved out of here by May 19th anyway, cleaning up a little early is mostly a good thing.
Also, Jason/Emily, I don't mean to be hostile about this whole thing. I've just consistently felt like we could run tournaments out of our apartment much more successfully than the ones you have.
I'm going to set the date as May 15th with no other possible dates.
On the discussion of door fees, originally at the Gamebox tournaments there were going to be door fees, and the store was going to take a cut out of the pot. I had to do a lot of convincing to get it down to just a door fee. The thing about venues--gaming centers especially--is that they expect to actually be making money when people come to play video games at their location. There was always pressure to raise the door fee (no one wants a $8-10 door fee), and that's why we never had another one. I mean, the tournaments at Gamebox would be on our typically busiest day of the week and would completely pack the store full of people who essentially only paid $5 to play all day.
A couple of things.Ohhhh that makes so much sense now...sort of
I understand wanting to make more money off the people who show up, but did our presence ever really deter any potential customers from coming in and doing their own thing? I mean if I walked into gamebox wanting to play PC then if I saw a roomful of people playing smash bros I would just play PC and when I was bored check out the smash stuff for entertaining viewing.
Actually now that I think about it I would probably be even more likely to come back since I know the place is popular and a good way to meet more gamers
