message from thief:
The next UA away game is the 29th, so that seems like the best option. I'm going to go reserve the room tomorrow to be sure we can still hold it, but it seems like the 29th is when the next tournament is going to be.

So inform your friends, and I'll send a message tomorrow when it's 100% confirmed.

add Ice Climbers and Fox to my characters :(

well, i'm playing like every character now.

you could put like "Marth, Roy, and every character except Ness, Kirby, and Yoshi"

but my ics and fox i think are looking decent

Actually, I was kind of wondering about that. Saturdays are pretty busy, but I kinda figured you guys were playing as often as schedules permit. I guess that makes Wednesday that much sweeter.

Finally, an update regarding Brawl's online capabilities. I'm still hoping that voicechat becomes a reality in time for Brawl. It's just too necessary in team battles and it's good for trash talking and enjoying the sillier moments of Smash Bros. I'm also a bit annoyed that stats & user info won't be tracked when I play against strangers. How you gonna make friends online if you don't know who you're playing against? And what about online ranking and tournaments? Maybe there will be modes for these as well. I can actually think of a LOT of online services that this game would benefit from. These words I found to be particularly encouraging:

"We’re planning a number of services that make use of Wi-Fi, but we’ll reveal them gradually with the other modes. Enjoy." (Smash Dojo, wifi update)

We'll see. Being able to practice during the matchfinder is AWESOME!

I wouldn't call hitting the sandbag practice. Does Sakurai think we are just gonna smash attack the sangbag repeatedly until the game loads? Does he think that we are THAT simple-minded? Jeez.

Oh, JWT. You're being ridiculous. That's just a picture to show people what to expect. I know we play this hardcore, but you gotta remember that there are people, especially the younger set, who play this on a more casual level. A beginner may wanna practice charging a smash attack or try to understand a move's range or sweetspot properties.

Personally, I can think of plenty of things I could practice: shffl, wavedash, waveland, wavesmash, combos, juggling, etc. I might even wanna use the load times before battle to reacquaint myself with a character I don't normally use.

In the words of Christopher Lloyd "Marty, you're not thinking fourth-dimensionally!"

Sandbag is good for practicing NAIR chains with Falcon...assuming the stage is wide enough to accomodate for that. If you just sit there and punch the sandbag then that's just dumb.

Nevermind, it's just dumb regardless. Actually I'm not very excited about the wifi--the random mode looks pretty bleak, and the lack of voice support puts Nintendo about 10 years behind their competitors. Fighting games don't work online anyway. Brawl's online will suck no matter what. You can quote me on that.

Quoted. :D

IMO I think the online will work for say... just to have fun. I don't see it having its uses for competitive play, but meh you never know :)

Hey Alabama guys, I am just curious. Does JMOAN even post on these forums?

Edit: I agree with Shai for the most part but I think it can sort of be used to work on some of your game. Maybe there might be too much lag to simulate a real match on console, though so it might screw up timing, spacing, and techs. Who knows?

Here's what I experienced playing Smash64 online off and on for 4 years:

1. I got way, way better at the game.

2. The lag you get will probably be like playing on a laggy LCD/Plasma TV. Some people can't tell the difference, some people are completely bothered by it, but I think most people would only really notice it when switching between the two (where it would take some time to readjust).

3. I've played in many online smash tournaments, and as far as I'm concerned, they're legitimate. I think lag has a minimal effect on the outcome. Although, there are some players (even some of the really good ones) who will say "online sucks, play me on the 64." But I think for the most part, most of the community believes that online tournaments are just fine. (Unless we're playing for money.. then it becomes a little more serious :) MLG Halo2 tournies weren't played online.)

p.s.

This is the opposite reaction I expected from Mr. Flashy Tech Skill.

What kind of tech skill practice could I get out of hitting the sandbag? Bleh, whatever, I don't really care right now.
