If you had to choose a single genre to place ssbm into, which would it be and why?

There are only a few selections I would deem appropriate but if you can make the argument for melee being an FPS by all means. . .

Keep trolling and mindless, contentless posts to a minimum. I know it's hard for some people.

to save from anyone asking what a "genre" is: http://lmgtfy.com/?q=genre

Fighting?
Because you fight.
And because 'party' isn't really a genre for the same reason 'casual' is not a genre.

You have to pick one. Is it platforming or is it fighting?
where do you place action RPGs?

the usual argument against smash involves it being sufficiently different from every other fighter to warrant exclusion
-no health bars --> ringouts only
-no consistent knockback
-no high/mid/low hit levels
-we have to change the game from its factory settings to make it tourney-viable. oh my LOL

melee's design philosophy is thrown to the wind. I believe the manual says something to the effect of "find new ways to play!"

It's a fighting game with a heavy emphasis on platforming movement.
Whenever I'm asked about Smash, I call it a "Physics-based Fighter."

Fighting game. Platforms are definitely a core aspect of melee, but they do not do as good of a job of defining the object of the game as does fighting imo.

yeah its just like boss fights in megaman more or less

the rock paper scissors element of avoiding/landing attacks/grabs that other fighting games utilize is more or less replaced by literally moving out of the way and navigating around attacks, a la platform game

complex button inputs disappear in lieu of, once again, navigating around and spacing

i always agree with brookman

If there wasn't any tournament rules and kept smash as the way it is right now then it's definitely a party game.

It's simply our conditioning that we think smash as a fighter with all the strange rulesets.

Even though that's true, I don't think it is a valid argument.
It is a partygame in the core, because that's what its meant to be. Just because there is a ruleset now and tournaments being held, doesn't change the main aspect of the game.

Like you can't take mario party and only play Tug-O-war and call it a Tug-O-war genre.

Hope you see where I'm getting at.

EDIT* Ok just now I read Divinokage's post under rubyiris' . lol

fighting. fighting genre games are ALWAYS DIFFERENT,

a game being different leads to variety

variety leads to a really good game that I will play for a long time, and will ignore all games of current time
